Warning:  This is about #gamergate.  If you really don't care about it, then ignore this blog and more on.  The only reason I wanted to post this video here is because I've seen more than a few comments about #gamergate and it seems quit a few people are confused about it and/or aren't sure why it's still going on.  I thought this video (released 3/26/15) was a good summary of the situation.  I honestly don't participate in #gamergate arguments because I see a lot of gender politics involved with it.  Now, I have no problem arguing over gender politics, but I think it, in general, takes away from what #gamergate is really about.  Gender politics aren't unique to #gamergate.  I just ask that those that genuinely don't know about #gamergate and want to know a little something, check out the video.  It's about 20min and in my opinion boils down the issue pretty well.

I really hope this informed some people on #gamergate.  I understand why many people don't get involved, but it's not a bad idea to know what's going on.  This is our hobby and #gamergate is still going on.  It's been almost a year.  If you're for honest game journalism and don't what to be talked down to and/or treated like a videogame loser, then you're actually a gamergater.  Why not get involved in #gamergate?  Do you think the video left out some important info for or against #gamergate?  Do you think #gamergate is only about gender politics?  I'm in no way an expext on #gamergate, but I would like to see any comments you want to add. Cool

I think just with the terms liberal or conservative, democrat or conservative, gamegate and anti-gamergate mean different things to everyone.  I appreciate that this is what it means to you, and to a lot of people.  But that doesn't mean there's a sort of universal, or any concensus on what these positions mean.

personally, I don't understand what the big deal is about.  so what if some gamer mag talks down to people.  Don't read it.  They probably don't like the same games you do anyway.  (not you, personally, I mean you as in people complaining)  So Polygon gave Gone Home game of the year.  Don't read it.  I don't.  Polygon makes me sick.  But they have every right to publish what they want to publish.

Is the game industry and game press incestuous?  Yes.  Welcome to reality.  How do you think movies and books and music work?

I hope you don't think I'm aiming this snippiness at you, I just don't see what the big deal is anymore.  There're so many bigger problems in the world, and this whole US VERSUS THEM thing is a universal symptom, that we find in politics, racial stuff, religious stuff, and now gaming.  It just makes me sad.  :(

It's fine if you don't want to get involved, but ignoring it will not make it go away.

Honestly, I agree, arguing over game journalism is small compared to other problems of the world, but what's happening in gaming is happening in other things too.  Politics are affecting everything.  It's from something as little as gaming up to the our civil rights we live by everyday.  When I pull back and look at the big picture, I notice something is going on.  It's all conveniently happening at the same time and the media is involved.  Those that control the media control the thoughts of the people.  It's one of the reasons why some people view #gamergate the way they do.  And many other things.

Preach man. I'm only have a slight support and I acknowledge that there are shitty members (but which movement doesn't?), but I feel many, including on this very own site, either get the wrong ideas about the movement or thinks it's all about shitting on many people.

Yeah, that's the feeling I get too.  I keep many comments to myself, because I don't want to argue with people that don't want to debate the matter.  Gamergate is a pretty basic issue.  You're for it or not.  Why be against it?  I think the opposers of gamergate muddy the issue with gender politics.  Anti-ggers call people racist and misogyist to vilify them and it takes away from the debates and pisses people off.  What annoys me is that it works as often as it does.  At least it seems that way online.  Out in the real wild world, I find way more people that are with #gamergate.

I'm having too much fun playing games and reviewing them to mess with GamerGate too much.

You're a honest reviewer, Cary.  You represent what #gamergate wants.

This was very informative and I'm really annoyed with all the ass kissing and colluding going on all over the place. The press in gerneral has become a cess pool of ethicless, shameless, glory hounds more interest in creating a buzz vs actually reporting. The fact that they tried to turn it into some kind of sexist/mysogeny thing is no better that the regular press making it look like the only people getting beat and shot by cops are black. Its very misleading and just stirs shit up. I don't subscribe to anything anymore. I'm more inclined to get feed back from you or most of the folks on this site if I want an honest opinion about a game.

That's what really pissed me off.  The gaming press coming together and out right attacking their audience.  Not even the mainstream media with it's continued nonsense are bold enough to do that.  Some people are quick to shout racism and sexism where there is none.

I get my reviews from user based sites too.  I use to go to Gamertrailers a lot for reviews, because I liked their videos, but I hadn't been over there in a while.

I'm pretty sick of this altogether, but I will admit, the anti side really needs to be taken down a peg or two. Or at least given a huge reality check. If it was just they give opinions I don't like, I wouldn't care. But I see them silence others and only give exposure to opinions with agree with them, I feel that's enough for a push against them to be made.

But they make it even worse and go after other people's jobs, for the pettiest stuff too. Like that stuff with Kuchera blowing up at that EA guy for retweeting a GGer he didn't know supports GG and then linking Kuchera's article about stopping harassment. Dude did nothing wrong, but people said he should be fired. Or Totalbiscuit, guy just explained how he handles ethics and where game sites can improved. That's it. And they're trying to drive him out of the industry. WHILE THE GUY WAS FIGHTING CANCER! So that's why I want these guys out. That's just fucked up.

Thing is though, I don't want to be active in it. If anything goes wrong with GG, that could look really bad in a background check when I apply for a job. And since I want to get into the police, I need as clean a record as possible. So I stay out, hoping things change soon while just trying to post positive things about games. Because they're awesome.

I'd also really recommend Event Status to you. Guy is probably the most level headed GGer out there, even if he spends all his time yelling in videos.

Oh man, I hear ya.  I've seen some anti people write and do some crazy stuff.  This issue would of ended long ago, but those guys fight dirty and it pisses me off all over again.

I actually try to stay out of it too.  There are only so many battle I can get involved in at a time. Laughing  IMO, #gamergate is a no brainer about which side I should be on.  I try my best to support from the shadows and encourage the people on the front lines.

I hadn't heard of Event Status.  I'll check him out.

I'm with you James. I sorta accepted pixlbit wanted to keep out of GG which I tried to honor by not posting here after I joined. Of course that became a paradox when I realized I missed a lot of my friends from here simultaneously!

I'm glad you had the courage to "speak up" and I'd argur gamergate is what gamergate is...people may interpret it differently but GG itself still stands for ethics in game journalism and is about freedom of expression and anti-censorship.

Lastly anyone who still has been lead to believe GG is all angry white dudes who hate the wimmen-folks should really look more into #notyourshield!

It's sad how people shit on #notyourshield too.  I'm (a little) not surprised people don't know the truth about GG and #notyourshield.  If anyone is only a little curious and they look it up on Wikipedia, everything sounds like shit.  Wikipedia is full of bullshit and then there are companies like iam8bit that sell those t-shirts, "Gamergate is Hate".  I'm not buying anything from them and I spreading the word.
