JRPGS have left me in a state of ambivalence recently

While I'm mostly happy to see that gamers have embraced current RPGs like Persona 4, Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey and Ni No Kuni and their critical praise will assure future installments, I'm somewhat sad to see that the game play style of one of my all time favorite games isn't represented in any way shape or form this generation. That game, which I feel after giving it some thought, has to be my favorite RPG of all time. That game is the original PSOne classic known as Valkyrie Profile. I recently read an article praising this game and it really reinforced my feelings and thought about how amazing the game was and also how dissapointing it is that there has never been a proper continuation of the series with it's original 2D style and design. I think the game stands alone as a unique gaming experience with enough exploration, story and combat to keep me playing it many times over. It has some of the best 2D sprite animations, visual flair and overall pazaaz to rival even the flashies RPGs currently being released. Just my opinion.

Valkyrie profile was just one of those games. Aka, it was one of a kind! Man, it had some beautiful sprite work. Even today it looks beautiful. (Despite the jaggies!)

I remember it looking much better in actual motion, and the lighting and color in the game being really beautiful.  I never made it far in this, but I'm glad I bought a copy and one of these days I will go through it.

oh wait maybe I am confusing it with the PS2 edition....

Those jaggies are mostly due to the probability that the screen shots are from ROM emulators. I don't think the game is available on PSN. Unless you buy a PSP version or play through emulator, it's hard to get that original quality. (Alas.)

This would be a perfect game to put on the Vita. I had it on the PSone, but never beat it. I will look for it at Software Seconds this week.

I don't think the game is avaliable on PSN store. Your best bet is CD, PSP, or rom.

Valkyrie Profile was definitely a surprise hit for me. I had a choice between it and Chrono Cross back in 2000. VP looked more interesting but I wasn't sure about its game play style compared to the safer style of CC. I went for VP anyway, and after buying the latter as a Player's Choice title for $20 a year later, I'm glad I went for Valkyrie Profile.

I don't think traditional RPGs are going away so much as they are changing. I've found plenty of good RPGs this generation, including one excellent game from the makers of VP, Resonance of Fate. And with cel-shaded graphics looking better than ever, I don't miss sprite graphics as much as I used to.

There are so many RPGs that are clones of each other, why not make a copy of VP? The game should be emulated. I have to get back to Resonance of Fate, although I do think it's a very different game.

I have the PS1 game but just the disks in two flat CD cases. Found it in an EB years ago. I played through to the second disk but never finished. The concept of sending your team  to Valhalla (or whatever) really made it something different. I didn't like VP2 though.

Training a team to send to Valhalla was one aspect, but the animation, combat and story also make it worth while.

I wish I'd have purchased VP when I had the chance. That was the one that got away.

There is a psp version called Lenneth. It stretched the screen though, but still playable. I'm sure you can finda rom or cd on the web. I think it's worth playing since it's very unique and I haven't played anything like it in years.

Oh man, those PS1 graphics get me everytime! That was the best era for RPGs. I've always wanted to get Valkyrie Profile ever since it came out on PSP.

Do not hesitate. If you are a JRPG fan, there's no reason why you shouldn't play it.

I have only put a few hours into this game, but it was pretty cool and very unique. I think it strayed too far from the formula I was used at the time to so it went on the back burner. I will get to it one of these days.

The game does offer a variety of gameplay for an RPG. Dungeon Exploring, Combat, Towns and people.

This is an awesome RPG! Even if you don't really like classic RPG's that much. I bought and played both the Playstation 1 and PsP versions. I must have spent a hundred hours on the main game and the bonus dungeon. Glorious.

Ive played both versions. PS1 and PSP. PSP has stretched graphics, but playable nonetheless. Boy the end game content.

I picked up the PSP version last year (or was it the year before?) for cheap and I'm glad I did, though i haven't started it yet. Heard so many good things. I started using my PSP again this year after it collected dust for nearly all of 2012, so hopefully I can get to VP  this year.

Also, yay for awesome sprite work!

I still play my PSP from time to time. There are quite a few PSP games I missed out on in the passed that aren't available on VITA yet. Good little machine.
