The Time Has Come the Mothman Said to Talk of Many Things....

Guten Tag Pixlbitallion and welcome to some miscellaneous ramblings.

First off Windows 10. I've been working with the preview for about a month now and spent the whole weekend trying to wrestle a new build onto my HP laptop. It was a pain because Windows Update refused to work properly but after a bunch of registry hacks I was able to get it to work.

The latest build 10130 is actually not too bad but while it fixes some things it breaks others. Project Spartan or the Edge browser seems to have trouble loading some pages. It displays as blank until you reload the page. Thankfully if you already have IE, Firefox or Chrome (I have all three) you don't have to put up with the new browser but it is there if you want to use it.

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade on July 29th and some of you may have an icon on your taskbar that allows you to "reserve" your free copy. I wouldn't be in a big hurry to do so. The free offer lasts for a year and it's not like they are going to run out. All Windows 7 and 8 users are entitled to this upgrade when they are ready. It seems like an improvement over Win 8 so far.

Conclusions on the Surface Pro 3. I've been using the mid-line Core i5 with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Retail price is around $1500 with the keyboard. If you think that's expensive keep in mind that the top of the line Core i7 model goes for well over $2000.

Bottom line: This is not a laptop replacement IMO. First because of the kickstand it won't really sit on you lap comfortably. It also has only one USB 3 port and no HDMI or Ethernet ports.

Some games I tested won't even work with the Intel 4400 graphics and 4 GBs of shared video ram. Yes the resolution goes all the way to 11 with 2160 X 1440 capability but this is by no means a gaming machine. Also the 12" screen will be much too small for many peoples gaming needs.

It's basically just a very expensive high res. tablet that can be made into a decent business desktop with the addition of a USB 3.0 docking station and a 24" monitor. At the price though my advice is stay away. For free though I'll take it.

What have I been playing. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I started Atelier Rorona Plus on PS3 the other day, I also tried to get into Resonance of Fate and it's complex battle system. I didn't get too far. Still playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS and I've gone back to Fire Emblem: Awakening and started from scratch.

I downloaded Rainbow Moon to my new PS3 and thanks to the whole Cross Save thing I was able to load my last save from the network. That was pretty cool. I don't use the cloud save function on the PS3 so Cross Save was the only thing that saved me from having to start RM all over again. My level 78 crew are back in business and one day I will beat this game.

Anyway, that's me done. Mothman has flown.

Mein laben!

thanks for the heads up about Windows 10.  We're not going to pick up a new machine for my mom until it comes out.

eh, not really into the surface.  you just can't compete with the number of apps apple has.  I've decided to build a musical instrument composed mainly of two ipads with other equipment... for music iPads are freaking amazing.

Resonance of Fate could have been so cool.

It's the price that kills me Matt. Even the most expensive iPad doesn't cost that much. The pen is kind of cool but not $1500 cool and certainly not over 2 grand cool.

I'm going to try to play Resonance of Fate this time. I have it in physical form for 360 but I don't like using that machine so I'm glad I have it for PS3 now. I'm going to go through the tutorials rather than blindly getting into battles like last time.

I like that Windows is giving away 10 to their customers who already have 7 and 8. If the rollout is anything like when Yosemite was released I'd wait a bit because the downloads are going to take forever.

As good as the Surface Pro sounds I could spend that kind of money on a full on laptop or desktop.

Yep, you'd be better off doing so.

Thankfully I won't have to put up with waiting for the downloads because I'll have my hands on the final code in ISO form before it goes public.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64 bit laptop. Not sure I want to upgrade to Win 10. Kinda afraid it will mess everything up. I kinda like it as it is at the moment.

Unless you want to use some of the new features there's no reason to jump on the upgrade yet. However the free period ends after one year so if you don't upgrade and then decide you want to after a year it's going to cost money.

I'll be keeping you Picklebits up to date on any issues I find and you can decide accordingly.

I'll prob stay with win 7 for now. I think I'll be out of this laptop and on to something else in the near future anyway. It is over five years old now.
