I Remember... (Part Two)

I remember the first days with my Nintendo 64.  It was Christmas, 1996, and I was living at my parents' house in Minnesota.  To say it was winter outside would be an understatement.  Meanwhile, I slowly sneaked through winter winds on the snow/sniper board in Goldeneye.  I'd never imagined a game so enveloping.  I snuck through the environment, aiming at enemy heads a hundred yards away. "THUMP!" went the silence rifle as I sent them to their graves.

I remember the first time I dived into the water on the sunken treasure level in Mario 64.  It was late at night, quiet, and I submerged myself in the virtual water and dodged the virtual fish, collecting coins and other treasures.

This was a glorious Christmas!  Yes, I was nearly twenty, too old to be a boy, too young to be a man, but here I was a child again as I explored these fantastic places.

That's why I love video games:  because they take me away to amazing feelings and worlds.

I'll be doing this shit when I'm 80 years old.  The child never dies, if you don't want it to.

Goldeneye was 1997, not 1996 man.

My wife and I bought our N64 at Toys R Us the Christmas after it launched as a Christmas present for the kids and us. Mario 64 and Pilot Wings were the two games we got with it because they were the only two games available at launch. We loved the thing but it took so long for games to come out. I think there were only 20 games available after a whole year.

yeah that's true.  It didn't have many games... boy, Nintendo hasn't changed at all, has it?

When the N64 came out, I was already starting to write game reviews for The Dallas Morning News, so I made sure to reserve one at the EB Games in the mall.  They called me to pick it up the day before a math test.  Guess how much studying I did for that test that night?  We were all pretty impressed with Mario 64, and excited for the possibilities to come.  But I ended up getting a PSOne soon after anyway. :)

Super Mario 64 was the most amazing game I'd ever played up to that point. For me it was probably the single biggest leap in gaming I ever saw.

I was still playing first person shooter ports from PC to the consoles. Even the N64 got a few. Then there was Turok. Zelda, Mario, didn't know them at the time.

Oh yes. The Cerebral Bore! I distintly remember playing Turok Rage Wars with my friend Mark on the N64 and attacking each other with that thing. The animation was really funny.

Heck yeah Goldeneye! I played a bunch of that with my friend's in college. They were Nintendo and I went with that new Playstation system. Multiplayer is such a fun mode on that game.
