It's the little details that makes a difference

I can't think of anything bad to say about Xenoblade Chronicles except that I wish I had more time to play more of it. I played for a few hours again but what really struck me was the weather. I don't mind grinding and leveling up, but not many RPGs with open worlds pay much attention to things like weather. Dragon's Dogma does interesting things with day/night even wind. Xenoblades sudden torrents of rain, cloudy overcast, starry skies and bright sunshines makes the game play feel more pleasant. It's little details like neat weather cycles that turn a good game experience into a great game experience. I know that combat systems and stories matter, but XC is really nice to look at. The lighting effects are particularly noteworthy.

Xenoblade is my favourite RPG from the past few years. I loved the world and the attention to detail. When the next game comes out  I'll find a way to buy a Wii U.

The game does look beautiful. I still don't understand people that commplain about "wii graphics" but I'm not much of a graphics whore to begin with. The scene of the characters crossing the bridge is especially stunning!

The game is very stylized but a little jaggie sometimes. Especially noticeable on an HD TV. If there are really smooth screen caps of the game they are most likely emulated on Dolphin. I had to shrink these images to fit into the blog, but full blown they appear a bit more jaggier. The game still has lighting and effects and what not.

Xenoblade proves that great artists and engineers can overcome technical limitations. While it doesn't have the same sharp details as later PS3/360 games it is quite technically impressive.

It doesn't matter when you play it. It will always be a good game. It's pretty long too.

Weather can certainly set a tone, and put you in a mood. Rain instantly relaxes me.

Yeah. It's quite relaxing and atmospheric.

This game is seriously incredible. I feel bad because I got distracted from it when I hit the snow area and I haven't gone back in a few weeks. It's just such a long game!

I don't mind if I never finish it. I just like picking it up and just playing it. I stick around an area for a while before moving on. Very nice.

I picked this up before it became super expensive (I'm glad I did!) but I haven't started it yet. I'm a little hesitant to, actually, because of how long it is but I know that when I do, I'm in for a treat.

I don't think you can beat it in a weekend or two. I feel like it's one of those games that you keep playing on and on.

I went back to this game a few weeks ago after a break of at least a year. I had quit on a bossfight (Xord) and had forgotten much of the battle system, so Xord kicked my ass pretty quick. It was hard to see what was happening so I blamed the low def graphics (no doubt I probably just need to grind a little), but you mentioned they look worse on a HD TV so that probably added to it.

I probably need to start again from the beginning. I'm not that far into it.

Anyway, great post. I wanna go back to XC experience those weather effects!

Xord sucks. I think XC sort of shares with FF13 in that you can kind of get away with auto battle for the most part, but come boss fights, you really need to get down and learn the nuances of the combat system. I like games with interesting combat systems, and XC is no different.

I really enjoyed the first open valley I encountered. The rain, day and night, cloudy overcast cycling through my gameplay made me feel very relaxed and happy. I don't know if there are more areas like this, but I like the world a lot.

Weather effects and day/night cycles are some of the most enjoyable parts of games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim. You really get immersed into those worlds when these systems are well implemented.
