The answers are in Smash

Hey Pixlbit, how's it going? Well, just a bit long for E3! This will most likely be the last blog I post till after Nintendo's E3 presentation. Anyway, we all know about how Super Smash Bros. brings Nintendo All-stars and select third-party characters to duke it out in the ultimate crossover fighting game. The games are packed with content, from modes, stages, fighters, and trophies, it's basically you dream game from your childhood, cause I'm sure alot of you always wanted to see your favorite characters in one game. However one thing I've noticed is that every entry in Smash,it might actually be hinting or telling us about Nintendo's future games or what they are planning to do.

If you think about it, it kinda makes sense in some ways. In Melee, we had Marth and Roy, 2 characters no one has ever even heard of here, unless you're from Japan. Marth and Roy were characters from the Japanese only Fire Emblem series. In fact, they were planning on removing them from the international release of the game, but decided to leave them. They became popular and this probably prompted Nintendo to test the waters by releasing Fire Emblem games on the GBA and GCN. That is just one example. I don't think this one is likely, but Mr. Game and Watch probably made Nintendo release those Game and Watch DS games from Club Nintendo.

If we dig deeper into the trophies, we can even find more clues, not in games, but for future Smash instalments. Wario, Dedede, Meta-Knight, Pit, and Olimar were trophies in Melee, and they became characters for Brawl.

Lets move on to Brawl. Brawl added more to the game. This time they added assist trophies, non-playable characters who either help or hinder you in a fight. And Final Smash moves, which is like an ultimate finishing move of sorts. Now, lets look at clues here, first lets look at characters and assist trophies. First, we have Pit. Look at his design. He got a redesign and in his Final Smash, we can see Palutena, obviously with a new design. Now we move on a few years later and Pit makes a comeback with Kid Icarus: Uprising, and they are using the Brawl design for Pit, and for Palutena. Eventually Palutena became a playable fighter in Smash 3DS/Wii U, using the new design from Brawl/Uprising. Not only that, Sakurai had his own company, Sora and he was probably already working on Kid Icarus, but Nintendo brought him back for Brawl and they probably thought of adding Pit to reintroduce him, that way it can make way for the eventual Kid Icarus revival.

On Olimar, I think he was a trophy in Melee. On Brawl he became a playable fighter. The only thing I can think of is the Wii ports of Pikmin 1 and 2. Not sure of Pikmin 3.

Marth and Roy

On R.O.B., not sure, I'm going to guess since it was a peripheral for the NES, it meant that the Wii had alot or was getting more peripherals? Or it could mean that Nintendo brought back what was considered a gimmick or peripheral (R.O.B.) for the NES, to a new console that people considered gimmicky and full of peripherals It could also imply that R.O.B. was a new way to play video games, as to the Wii and it's Wii remote being a new way to play games. It's kinda clever if so, if not, then this one has no ground.

For Zero Suit Samus, I'm not sure what I could find. My only observation is that a Metroid game that shall not be named allowed you to play as Zero Suit Samus in the post game.

SSB Brawl logo

Now lets move on to assist trophies. Little Mac was an assist trophy in Brawl, and eventually became a playable fighter in SSB 3DS/Wii U. But we got a Punch-Out game in 2009, a year after Brawl. Maybe by having him as an assist trophy, they were trying to bring awareness back into the franchise. And the Little Mac from the recent Smash is the same design from Punch-Out Wii, except more refined and not cel-shaded.

Now, the ExciteBike assist trophy. Well technically the series was revived before Smash with ExciteTruck, but it wasn't till Brawl that they released ExciteBots and a new ExciteBike game on WiiWare.

Now for stages. Lets look at the Halberd, a stage from what's considered the best Kirby game. The Halberd is from Kirby Superstar on the SNES, and in it, Kirby tries to board the Halberd to stop Meta-Knight and every time Kirby boards it, he gets thrown off by the Halberds defenses. It's the same thing in Brawl, you have a platform following the Halberd, as if you're trying to board it, and when you do, the ship actives its defenses. Later that year, Kirby Superstar Ultra was released, a remake of the original Superstar.

Next, Smashville. This stage is an Animal Crossing stage, I think it's based on Wild Word on DS. In this stage you can see different Villagers, this was probably hinting that Villager will be a playable fighter in the next Smash. You can see one Villager in the stage that looks like the default one from Smash 4. Not only that, but there's an Animal Crossing assist trophy too. But if we look back a bit further, there's an Animal Crossing trophy in Melee too.

SSBB

Now for the Lylat Cruise stage. Look closely at the Arwings, they are redesigned and look like the N64 Arwing designs, just redesigned. We got Star Fox 64 3D a few years later and the whole game was remade. Graphics, sound, everything. And the Arwings look like the ones from Brawl too. Heck, I'm willing to bet that the Arwings from Star Fox Wii U will have the same designs, at least it looks like it from that one screenshot of Miyamoto playing the game.

On Luigi's Mansion stage, well we eventually got a new Luigi's Mansion game and Luigi got a new final smash in Smash 4.

As for the Rumble Falls stage, we got a Wii port of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. On Mushroomy Kingdom, we did get New Super Mario Bros. Wii and marked the first time in years since a 2D Mario platformer on consoles.

On to the Great Sea stage. I'm not quite sure about this one, but I'm willing to believe is that Nintendo isn't ready to abandon the look and that they haven't forgotten about the game. Toon Link came back in Smash 4 and we got WW HD. This one might be bull, but you can decide on that.

Now lets move to Snake and Sonic. Snake hasn't had a game on a Nintendo console since Twin Snakes on the Gamecube. So why is he in Brawl? Because Kojima wanted him in Melee, except that they couldn't add him because the game was nearly finished. He did make it in Brawl, and marked Snake's comeback on Nintendo hardware. And we did get port/remake of MGS3 on the 3DS.

Arwing

As for Sonic, well I remember there being an April Fool's prank that both Sonic and Tails were in Melee. You had to defeat a certain number of Multimen in Melee's Cruel Melee. We tried and nothing. He did appear in Brawl as a fighter. And we had some exclusive Sonic games too, but most of them suck. Third-party characters in Smash opened the floodgates for more third-party characters in Smash 4.

Lets now move on to Smash 4. Honestly, anything can happen here as it's fairly recent. Only things I can think of is Shulk in Smash probably brought him and Xenoblade more exposure, thus prompting a port of Xenoblade to the "New" 3DS. That and Duck Hunt being in Smash gaves us Duck Hunt the game, on the eShop.

SSB logo

It's fairly new, so anything can happen here. But lets move back in time back to the first Smash on the N64. We've already seen Mario, Link, Fox, Pikachu, and Jigglypuff in 3D as in 3D models or 3D games, so the other characters you see are the first time we are seeing them in 3D. Characters like Kirby, DK, Samus, Captain Falcon, and Ness are new to the 3D space. From there, we got Kirby 64, Kirby's first N64 title which uses 3D models, Donkey Kong 64, a 3D platformer. Captain Falcon and Samus wouldn't be seen in 3D till years late with Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX. Ness however, there was an Earthbound 64, but it was cancelled.

But before we go, here's a final one: amiibo. Look at the Melee trophies, at least the ones from the opening movie, the base has the Smash logo. Amiibo figures are the character trophies from Melee. But that's not all. I remember reading that Brawl, and King Dedede predicted the amiibo situation, as Dedede is hoarding characters that have been turned into trophies. I can't take credit for that. But one thing they forgot to mention is that, in Brawl, to revert or bring a character back to life, you simply touch or tap the base they are standing on. You do this with amiibo figures too, by touching or taping the base of an amiibo figure on the Gamepad and "New" 3DS. It's most likely a design thing though. One thing I'm also willing to bet, is that the official character art for a character turned out that way, is so it'll be easier to sculp amiibo figures. That's why the characters aren't in such crazy poses.

That's all that I have for now on this. I've been working on this post for the longest time, but stopped it cause Smash 4 came out. As I've said, the game isn't even a year old yet, so anything in that game can predict something or become a reality. Be it a new game, reviving a new IP, to characters from trophies and assist trophies becoming a playable fighter in the next Smash.

SSB 3DS/Wii U logo

There's probably things I might of missed, so I'll leave anyone here to fill in the gaps. Remember, I'm not saying these are real, even though I make it sound like it is, but it might be possible due to evidence in the Smash games themselves, but take it with a grain of salt.

So, that's all I have for now, I technically have one more post but it was scrapped. However I am working on bringing it back with the news of a recent announcement that suddenly made the post relevant again. I'll see if I can have it up by monday hopefully. So, what did you think of this, it's probably a bunch of babble huh? And excuse the random image sizes, made this on the "New" 3DS. Well thanks for reading and later.

Eh, I'd say these are more coincidences than predictions. Smash has a lot of characters who got stuff later, but it also had the Ice Climbers, Mr. Game and Watch, and Ness, who have never got anything save Virtual Console ports.

I would argue that while some of these are coincidences, Super Smash Bros does have at least some effect on what Nintendo chooses to develop or localize for non-Japanese markets. Fire Emblem had never been localized before SSB Melee, and I do believe it was because the appearance of Marth and Roy in Melee got American gamers interested in the series that Nintendo finally decided to give Fire Emblem a chance in the US. Pit appeared in Brawl, and then Nintendo made Kid Icarus: Uprising. Even Earthbound's VC release could be attributed to the popularity of Ness and Lucas in the SSB games.

Think about it: if Nintendo gets feedback that certain characters are very popular and that gamers are interested in seeing the series that the games came from, it's entirely conceivable that they would act on it.

Yeah, but that's less Nintendo putting these guys in Smash to add content, noticing how popular they are with fans, then try to cash in on that, rather than putting them in because they're planning big things with these characters. In other words, it was a coincidence that these particular characters were popular enough in Smash to justify localizing their games.

I think Nintendo does test the waters with its choices of Smash Bros. characters. If the characters prove popular and Nintendo receives that feedback, that gives Nintendo incentive to do something with them, and I think that's what this blog is getting at. There really isn't much that can be done with franchises like Ice Climbers or Game & Watch anyway.

I don't know, I've imagined some pretty sweet things they can make with Ice Climbers. Mostly a more kid friendly Tomb Raider with co-op.

I'd love a new console Luigi's Mansion.
