First of all, thanks for everyone who commented on my last entry. I was looking to get a discussion going, and that's what happened.

Games: I tried to get back into FF III yesterday, but I wasn't feeling the love. I'll try again today and see what happens. I had a peek at the strategy guide, I'm pretty close to the end, so that was reassuring. I also bought River King: A Wonderful Journey off PSN a couple of days ago, thanks to leeradical42 telling me about it. I'm liking it a lot, once I finally wised up and bought a shovel so I didn't have to keep buying bait. It's snowing here today and I plan on spending my day fishing in a game where it seems to be summer.

Watching: I've been on a nostalgia kick lately and have been watching some of my old favorite TV shows. Some are still really good (NYPD Blue), some are so bad they're comedy at this point (Emergency!, Adam-12, and Hawaii Five-0). I also watched Le Chevalier D'eon all the way through. It was OK, I liked it up until about the last six episodes, when they started killing everyone off.

Ranger Stuff: The neighbors are winding down the sugaring operation. Michael told me they ended up with just over six gallons, which means they boiled down about 250 gallons of sap. I also had a deer stroll casually by my front windows five mornings ago. She had five friends with her around the side of the cottage. The crows were making a fuss the day before yesterday, and drove an eagle out of one of the big trees on the edge of the field. I was lucky enough to have a camera for the deer, not so much with the birds. I'm starting work in eleven days, so maybe a pic of the ospreys will make up for that, now that I know where all my camera gear is and can charge the battery in my DSLR.

Other stuff: Happy birthday to homelessrook! It'll be mine on Thursday, and then Joe Step's on Saturday. I think we have three decades covered here, lol. My mom was supposed to come to Maine this week and she was going to take me out to lunch, but with the storm, she's staying put. Boo. Have I mentioned I'm sick of winter? Think spring, everyone!

I felt like winter was done here, as well, but we're getting a blast for the next few days. I think 30cm or so is going to hit before Friday, but with rain in between. I'm so done with it!

We generally have some deer that go by the house in the spring and summer months. During the winter, we rarely see them as there's really nothing for them to eat in the yard. I've been seeing a lot of rabbit tracks lately through the snow, though. Looking forward to having the deer back in the mornings!

Oh, and happy upcoming birthday!

We get a lot of the same weather, Maine and Nova Scotia aren't that far apart.

I knew the deer were going through the yard, because I'd seen their tracks in the snow, I just wasn't expecting them at 9 AM. They use the line of trees separating our field from the neighbors field as a wildlife corridor, wchich means they go right past my cottage, as the cottage is about eight feet from the trees.

Ser, fingers crossed for ya! Been to Boston before? If you get a couple of spare hours, check out the USS Constitution. Worth taking the guided tour.

Yeah, I'm definitely happy that winter is almost over.

Are you getting this storm, too, Jamie? I'm OK about if you're not, as we got a dusting from that last one that nailed you.

It doesn't look like we have any major winter storms headed our way. The best chance of that was yesterday when we had a mix of snow and rain, but it wasn't much if anything. And that snow storm that happened two weeks ago disappeared as quickly ad it came thanks to the above-freezing temperatures. And the news was making this huuuuge deal about in the days leading up to the "storm". I was so disappointed.

Anyway, reading this blog got me thinking...You should write a weekly (or mostly daily) series called "Nature with the Ranger". You're really good at writing about the great outdoors without boring everyone to death. It's your calling. You're like a...a..."nature whisperer". *gental breeze blows*

Ranger1

Thanks, Jamie. I love natural history and working with my hands, so being a park ranger was kind of a natural fit. I'm hoping to do something weekly either here or on my poor, neglected blog on blogspot.

In-game fishing is surprisingly relaxing (depends on the game).  I wish I was good at real fishing.

I'm glad you qualified that with "depends on the game" Fishing in Nier was a whole lot of swearing and cursing for me.

jgusw

03/20/2013 at 01:50 PM

I'll keep that in mind.  Don't fish in Nier. :D

Ranger1

03/19/2013 at 02:00 PM

Can be quite relaxing, except I've been trying for two days to finish off a quest to catch a specific fish of a specific size and I can't advance the game until I do.

what game are you fishing in?

Ranger1

03/20/2013 at 04:11 PM

River King A Wonderful Journey. It's a PS2 game I downloaded from PSN. Leeradical42 blogged about it and mentioned it in my "Is Combat Really Necessary" blog entry, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It's a pretty cool game, even if I can't manage to land just a plain old salmon so that mean girl will let me though to the next area!

I'll be sure to wish you a Happy Birthday Thursday if I can, but just in case work or something else calls randomly again, and I'm unable to be on Pixlbit, Happy Early Birthday Tami!

Games: That River King one did look relaxing. It's nice to have a change of scenery, isn't it?

Watching: Only two I've seen are NYPD Blue and Hawaii Five-O. Never saw but a few episodes here and there of either, but I do love Five-O's theme song! lol

Ranger Stuff: You take better pictures from your kitchen table than I did in college! haha I need to save up for a DSLR of my own, one that does video as well. The film department always shot with those, and their stuff looked so good. Our news cameras in radio/tv were good, but I prefer the more filmic quality of DSLRs. SFASU really loved Canon Rebels for some reason.

Other stuff: I'm sorry your mom couldn't come down, but at least she'll be safe. I'll have to wish homelessrook a Happy Birthday.

And here in Texas, it is currently summer, perhaps tomorrow it'll be spring, but it was fall when I drove home last night, so who knows? lol I wish I lived in a state with actual seasons. That's a pretty flower picture.

Re: Hawaii Five-0: reboot or original? I like 'em both, but Danno on the original was way cooler.

As for the pictures, those were taken with my point-and-shoot. The DSLR intimidates me with all it's bells and whistles.

Ah, didn't read the fine print. Well, your point and shoot did a hell of a fine job. I was pretty intimidated by DSLR myself at first, but once you learn it, it's fairly simple; my main issue was learning to navigate the menu screen on those things. lol

Are you excited about going back to work? I get restless sometimes. In case I'm not here by then, happy early birthday Tami!

How cool is having deer just walk around your house. Happy early birthday! Sorry moms can't be there. Living in SoCal, we're spoiled weather wise, and watching the weather reports for the East Coast, I'm not gonna complain that it's 90 degrees here and it's gonna drop to the 70s by the end of the week.

Love old Hawaii Five-0! It reminds me of spending summers in Hawai'i visiting family and watching old reruns of that and Maginum PI (funny that I would watch two shows based in Hawai'i IN Hawai'i)

Ranger1

03/19/2013 at 02:05 PM

Thanks for the early birthday wishes. As for TV shows, they filmed Magnum using a lot of the same props and sets as they did Five-0. And yeah, most of the time it's way cool having all kinds of wildlife in the yard. Not so cool on those nights when the coyotes are hunting...

I miss seeing wildlife on my lawn. When we lived out near Prue[by Lake Keystone] we were on a 5 acre lot with lots of trees. Deer came across our property on a regular basis. Horses too! Our neighbors had them, sometimes they would get out. I love the shows you mentioned. Use to watch Adam 12 every night at 6:30 pm when I was young.

Ranger1

03/20/2013 at 12:04 PM

After having lived in the city for 15 years, it feels good to be back in a more rural area. I had to laugh at your mention of the neighbor's horses getting loose and wandering over your property. The same thing used to happen at my college campus, the neighbors on two sides of the college had herefords and they used to get loose and wander across the soccer field, giving the soccer coach conniption fits.

I'm starting to get back into photography. I've started reading about it again anyway and put all my equipment in an easy to reach spot. I now need to think up a Pokemon Snap type adventure in the real world.

John, I hope you do. I really enjoyed the photos that I've seen.

Me too. I'm sick of cold weather. March is nearing the end and it's still hovering around 30 degrees in central Indiana. I wanna go outside and run! lol

That River King game sounds interesting. If leeradical likes it,then it must be good. He has great taste. Always finds games I've never tried or even heard of.

It's fun. A little frustrating in spots when you have to catch a specific species of fish of a specific size, but otherwise fun. The trick is to remember to immediately save up your money and buy the shovel so you don't have to keep buying bait.

Worms! Slimy worms....yuck. Never help me much in real life I stink at fishing. Hey,I have a quick question for you. Been asking it of others, even asked Nick yesterday. What is your preferred method of imbedding YouTube videos in a blog? What steps do you use. All of a sudden nothing I attempt works. Don't know what I'm doing wrong here.

Ranger1

03/20/2013 at 04:14 PM

Snee taught me how to do it. You go to YouTube, click share, click embed, copy the text, paste it in the body of your blog and post. Then go back in with edit and repost. If they don't show up, hit your refresh button.

smartcelt

03/20/2013 at 08:31 PM

Thanks,Tami. I will give it a try. I was doing it the old fashioned way using the HTML window and copy/paste. It was working pretty good. But then the other day it stopped working. No matter what I did the video would not appear in my blog. I would just get a blank. Sounds like the whole HTML part is not needed. Cool!

smartcelt

03/21/2013 at 07:05 AM

Happy Birthday! I hope it is a terrific day and highly enjoyable. If it wasn't 6am I would raise a glass to toast you! By the way,it worked on the video thing. Here is the strange part, though. I did it just like you except I had to use the HTML window. It popped right up,just like I was doing before. But for two days I would get red lines under some of the code text. I wonder if that was it. I could not stop it from appearing, but now it's gone. Yay!

Ranger1

03/21/2013 at 07:13 AM

Thanks, Wayde! Feel free to raise a glass of juice to toast me, I like juice.

smartcelt

03/21/2013 at 04:50 PM

It was apple juice, and I did just that! The key word you used that helped me out was "refresh" as in the screen. That is the key to it all. It will appear blank until I hit refresh.
