DMC 4 is a great game and better than DmC, but I do agree on one thing - Bayonetta and especially Bayonetta 2 are the gold standard in that genre and DMC4 isn't quite going to measure up to them.
Devil May Cry 4-- What is the consensus?

I missed out on Devil May Cry 4 the first time around for some reason, and I can't explain why? I've always been a DMC series fan, all things dark and gothic of course. I think the game came out at a time where I just wasn't interested in action games or something? Anyhow, I'm playing through the Special Edition version that just came out and I feel like the game is kind of dated now. Being locked in small arenas and fighting my way out feels like a PS2 design and it's very apparent to me. I think I might have waited to long to get back into it, although it is very pretty in some areas, like where there is architecture, but not so much caves or outdoors environments. The castle level is really pretty, but I think that DMC 5 was so impressive with it's visual art design and sound that I kind of prefer it more. Plus I think Bayonetta 2 is the logical evolution to DMC series and makes DMC as a whole feel like a relic of the PS2.
Am I being too harsh? I hope to get a Devil May Cry game in the style of the last DMC, but I don't think that will happen.
