Another Day, Another Randup

Hey Pixlbits!

I haven't had much of anything to post in the last few days, so I've just been enjoying reading and commenting on everyone's blogs. I'm especially enjoying spunkyd99's Retronautical series. If you aren't following, you'd probably enjoy it!

I haven't been doing too much gaming lately, so I decided to do another random update. I did get some games in recently, but not too much. I played some more Fire Emblem. I fought in a battle that took around a half hour and made a stupid mistake, which resulted in the loss of a character.

If you aren't familiar with the series, it's known for it's difficulty, in that if a character dies they are gone for good. You, of course, always have the option to turn the game off and start from your last save. I can't possibly let a character die, so whenever I lose one in a battle I immediately turn the 3DS off and go back to it later, which in this case I haven't done yet. I might get some FE in today, though.

Just as an FYI, in the new 3DS title, you can actually play in a mode - I can't recall the name right now - that isn't quite as harsh. If a character dies in a battle, they are simply removed from the battlefield, but remain in your roster. I chose Classic Mode, because I'm slightly masochistic!

Today is the first day of Spring, but you wouldn't be able to tell around here. We had storm hit in the late hours of last night, early hours of this morning. My backyard was mostly green yesterday, but today looks like this...

My backyardMother Nature is a cruel lady...

I see a shovel in my future! This isn't the last of it, either. No, we'll be seeing more of the next few days. I can't wait for warmer temperatures!

The only other interesting thing I've been playing lately is Final Fantasy V. I own it on the PSX in the collection with Final Fantasy VI, which has those horrendous load times. I haven't played it since it was first released in the US, and after reading PixlBit's FF Retrospective, trefinger's quest to play all the FFs and natron's FF Dissection (from his site, VideoGamesAreRad.com) I've kind of got classic FF on the brain.

I'm playing it in a non-traditional way, though. I'm not sure if it's kosher to talk about on PixlBit, nor what everyone's thoughts are on it, so I'll just say briefly that I'm playing it on my Wii. And it's not in Japanese.

Now that I've written that rather nebulus comment regarding console hacking, I'll distract you with a cute picture of my cat!

PennyPenny likes to snuggle up under the blankets on cold days.

So that's everything. I hope everyone is having a good week, and hopefully I'll have some thing cool and gaming-related to blog about in the coming days!

Peace,
Surf

The main thing that bothered me about FFV on PSX was the localization. Especially the "YESSSSSSS!" At the end of battle. Wat??

But, if you can find it, I highly recommend the GBA version for its amazing scripting. It actually makes the story a lot more digestable, plus there are new jobs in that version too!

I totally forgot about the GBA version! Now that I have my GB Player, that would probably be the best way to play it. I've already put about 3 hours into the Super Famicom version, but I can probably whiz through all that again.

New jobs, you say? I'm intrigued!

I'm hoping they remake V and VI for the 3DS.  Who knows if they will, but I hope they do.

I hope they do, too. I'd be happy with just VI, haha, but if they're going in order then V would have to come first. I'd like to play a 3D remake for V, too, what am I saying!

I've been turning off my 3DS in Fire Emblem for the same reason as you. I'll be going along perfectly doing all the right things and then 1 mistake and 3 archers converge on my axe wielder and kill him.

Yeah, in this particular instance I pushed Olivia up to give Lon'qu another crack at a General and didn't realize that there was a small pocket of enemies just off screen. As soon as it was their turn three of them converged on her and killed her. Very frustrating!

FF V is great. I loved the job system and silly plot. Your right though. The ps1 version has bad loading times. They probably will remake it since Square Enix has remade the earlier ones. It seems like FF V often goes overlooked.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for the Job System, no matter what. I like the light-hearted nature of FFV, too. Butz (Bartz) is just a fun character. Very atypical from the usual FF main character scheme.

I think we may have gotten more snow from that storm than you did. Good news is, it's stopped, the sun is out, and that white crap appears to be melting fast.

As for FFV, I got to the final battle and kept getting my butt kicked and quit in frustration. I really need to go back and finish it.

Yeah, I think you guys did get more snow than we did. It was really wet here, and it turned into rain in some areas.

My first run-through of the game ended up in the same boat. I would've just power-levelled and made my way through the final portion of the game, but my Playstation was finnicky at the end of it's lifecycle and my copies of FFV and FFVI would constantly glitch out like an old NES game, so I eventually got fed up and quit!

I've been trying to find FF V Advance again lately, but no luck. Happy spring, ha ha. I swear, never trust a groundhog.

I forgot FFV Advance even existed! The only one I have is FFVI Advance.

I miss having snow. We never get it anymore. Just a light dusting or some sleet. It sucks. I was born in Minnesota,so maybe it's in my blood. But I enjoy it sometimes. I have not tried those particular FF games. I kinda started with FF VII. I need to go back and give these classics a go.

I can't help but suggest VI (3 US), but if you're going to try some of he older ones, you should start with IV (2 US). IV, V and VI are all great games, but I think VI is really a special achievement.

I like the snow at the start of the winter season, but now I'm ready for some warmer temps, haha.

Hey, thanks for mentioning my Retronautical series.

The weather man has been threatening that its  going to snow around here this evening. I'll believe it when I see.

Enjoy Final Fantasy.

Penny is very cute. I feel bad for the cold weather though, been great down here. Don't let the government know about your non-traditional gaming.
