Test My Game!

Okay guys, I've made a game prototype. It's only 5 levels, there's no sound, and all of the graphics are place holders. I just want to know what you think of how it feels!

 The controls are:
A - Left
D - Right
Spcbar - Jump. Press twice to double jump.

I also have some music I've made that I'm planning on adding. Let me know what you think of these tracks!

All three of those songs are going in the game potentially. Let me know what you think!

I tend to play using arrow keys, but if you're going to do letter keys maybe a and s would be better.

Otherwise, only trouble I had was sometimes not being sure when to double jump. I actually had fun completing the levels though and it's really interesting to think of how I can perform the same tasks in something so graphically simple I can in a more graphically developed game. Hell, it's actually got a cool indie feel to it.

Music took me to an "oh no!" page.

 Is this link better?

I can make it so you can use both letters and arrows move quite easily, and I'll probably do that next. As for the letters thing, most games use a and d, which is why I used it. In a 3d game, a is left and d is right, with s and w being back and forward respectively, so it just made sense to me.

But I'll absolutely add arrow key support.

Yeah, I almost always opt for controller instead of WASD, since I've always been mainly a console guy. When I've emulated through a webiste or other source, it tends to use arrow keys as movement and the WASD keys like face keys on a controller. Just a different perspective. Controls fine as it is, really.

Music sounds great. Relaxing. What do you use to record and edit? What's synthetic and what instruments are you playing?

Guitars and piano are real, Nothing else is. Some of it is pre made loops, some of it is hand crafted. I used Sony Acid.

All 3 tracks are good. They work great for video game BGM.

Some walls can be used to scale. Don't know if that was intended, but it works great for minor level shortcuts.

Yeah. Basically it was unintended. Floors reset your jump count,  walls don't. But I got lazy and used floors as walls at some point or platforms. I'm thinking I might leave it in and incorporate it into the level design eventually.

 And thanks for playing it!

I played it with the music on another tab. Nice experience! What I want in every platformer is the ability to grab edges, like if you just miss that platform, you can grab the edge and pull yourself up. Why not?

Don't know how to do that but I can certainly try! For now though, the sides of platforms resets your double jump. It's not perfect, but until I learn how to ledge grab it will have to do :D

Checked it out - definitely a solid start! I also noticed the "bug" with the number of jumps reseting from touching random surfaces, so I kind of had some fun "breaking the game." It actually made for an emergent experience, so, kind of cool!

Only other thing I noticed was that when you hit into a platform on a jump, your ability to make forward motion is locked, so you can't make it up to the next platform without landing and starting the jump over. Otherwise, great start!

Oh, also - the music is awesome!

Yeah. I think I've worked out what's causing the motion loss, but fixing that causes clipping issues so I don't know what to do haha. For now, if you have motion loss just jump again, but jump out and back in. That way you can keep moving without touching the ground.

 And thanks!

Pretty neat demo. It reminded me of Tofu from resident evil lol. Dont turn into a jerk like Phil Fish after this! You and Nick DiMola are officially on Phil Fish watch! Keeping your asses humble!Cool

I liked what I played but for some reason while I was on Level 3 my laptop shut down twice (I like to blame Apple.) I liked the game, and even the graphics. It reminds me of the old PC games I would play on the school computers in elementary school.

Damn that sucks. Oh well. Glad you liked it.

Wish my pc would work so I could try it. I will once I get that sorted out. Question, what software are you using to make it? And what online platform are you going to release it on, Steam? Just curious.

Nah. This is my first profect, so it'll just be free. I just want to make something and get it out there tbh. I might eventually sell games but for now I'm just learning :D

As for platform, I'm using gamesalad.

We all gotta start somewhere. Works very fine to me and except for what Nick has already noticed, seems pretty solid. I'm also listening to the soundtrack and it is quite great and dare I say, high quality of any game released nowadays. Looking forward for the development of this.

Thanks alex. For an update, I'm remaking it in another engine. Mostly because there are some issues with collision detection that makes what I want to do quite difficult.
