Late to the Party -- PS4 Impressions

Hey all.  So, I got my PS4 today and I wanted to discuss my early thoughts on it. First of all, I don't like the power button. Second of all, I like the controller -- so far.  I also like the silver light on the top of the unit. I don't know why, just looks nice. But that's about it for hardware. Let's talk about software.

The interface looks nice, but it's basically the same as PS3 though it makes slightly more sense. As soon as I booted up and installed everything it wanted me to update, and I did. The update was about 250 megabytes, and took much longer than it should have. I contribute this to Sony's crappy PSN servers. Well -- at least it's not as bad as downloading on the PS3, which I think has a 2400 baud modem.

That's about as much as I have examined with the system software. Haven't fixed up Netflix or Amazon yet, or used the store. I'm excited for the future of PSN+ freebies, but I'm not impressed by this month's offerings.

As far as Batman, I'm still impressed by the Batmobile, but I'm also annoyed by it. Having to do some of these opening missions again has made me realize they're not altogether fun. However, I do like the Batmobile and its design, I just wish it wasn't so heavy with it in the beginning of the game. Shit should have been a little spiced up with less of it.

Gotham looks great, everything looks great. I'm not totally pulled into the story yet, nor was I when I played it the first time up to a little after the Arkham Knight appears.  But everyone says the story is good, so...

Overall, I'm quite excited about the PS4 and the future of the games coming out for it. I'm gonna order ESO tomorrow, and can't wait to play that. I haven't checked out Madden yet, and the other freebie that came in the bundle, Alien Isolation, is going to have to wait.  Maybe tomorrow I'll play a little football though.  Curious about that.

And those are my first impressions. It's funny, I've lived through four Playstations now, and I've been satisfied with them for the most part.  I like the PSONE the best, and the PS3 the least. I have a feeling though the PS4 is going to be a good generation, with some brave new worlds to explore.

Your opinion is wrong. Fuck the batmobile. Fuck it and everyone who had a part in it. Fuck the batmobile for being nonsensical lore-wise. Fuck the batmobile for making the game more frustrating than it should have been. Fuck the batmobile for ruining the riddler challenges. Fuck the batmobile for almost taking more screen time than batman himself. Fuck the batmobile. Fuck the batmobile. Fuck the batmobile. FUCK THE BATMOBILE!

Now that that's off my chest, fuck the arkham knight. No the story isn't good. The story is the worst in the series I'd say, it just has some fucking awesome moments. In case you can't tell, I don't like this game.

Alien Isolation is fantastic, however.

nonsensical lore-wise?

story worse than Arkham Origins?

Did you beat Alien Isolation?  I've heard it's very difficult.

I did beat it. It has it's problems. It's a bit too long, it's a bit frustrating in places. But what it does well, it does extremely well. It's one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played.

Arkham Origins is not a part of the trilogy. Even Rocksteady say that.

I'm sure I've killed at least 100 people with the batmobile. I mean I hit them at 90 miles an hour AND electrocuted them.

yeah i heard it has its problems but it still seems cool.  I don't know if I will finish it, but I kinda got it for free, so...

those weren't people you killed. They were criminals. Criminals deserve to die.  Tongue Out

I agree with the nonsensical placement of the Batmobile in terms of Batman's character, but fuck you, your opinion is wrong, Arkham Knight has the best story and gameplay in the series as well as the biggest world and most stuinning graphics, and I love the 1989 Batmobile DLC. Only two trophies away from Platinum and have started the story again after beating both the main story and story+.

Aside from VR missions which I was never as big a fan of as other people being lacking and the overpricing of Season Pass content, this is my favorite in the series hands down.

In closing, go fuck yourself and let's yell at each other about this on a podcast soon. haha

Firstly: I'm glad you enjoy the game. I don't want to take that away from you and I don't want to get spoilerific here as to why the story doesn't work and is stupid and dumb. But...

The sidequests are shit. They're all anticlimactic and most offer no real story or insight into the villains you're chasing after. You fight them a few times and then they're in jail without so much as a conversation between them and batman. The ones that don't fall into this mould are ruined by pacing, since most sidequests are multi tiered and require you to progress through the story more to unlock the next chapter, which is stupid as shit.

Thirdly, the open world is a problem. Arkham Asylum was fucking awesome, and ever since it moved to open world it's been downhill. And the graphics? Honestly I didn't think they were that great. Especially after playing The Witcher 3.

Sure, Arkham Knight has the best combat in the series. Too bad you spend 60% of the game in the fucking batmobile so you barely get to experience it.

Arkham city had a better story. Asylum has a bad story with some admittedly fucking awesome moments.

In closing, there is an excellent game in here somewhere but it's buried under a mountain of shit.

I look forward to our inevitable screaming match of a podcast :)

that's the common argument here, that the open world nature of it pales in comparison to Asylum's tightness.  Personally, I'm on the other side, I love the open world, and Asylum, to me, is the lesser game.

I'll save my judgment on Knight though until I beat the game.

the argument that will never die!!!

The surprise in the story doesn't work and if the reason you have for it not working is based on Batman comics canon, I honestly don't care but we can talk about that after Matt's done.

I actually like how they made sidequests a part of the story and found the rogues gallery in this quite interesting. You do the same thing over and over in every Arkham series game, but I like the gameplay and thus don't care. The firefighters and military towers got tedious, but otherwise I really enjoyed the sidequests. Also, one of my favorite parts of the sidequests were Batman and the villains' dialogue in both the ride to GCPD and in GCPD, so I have no idea what you mean by "without so much as a conversation."

I didn't like the open world in City, becuase it felt unnecessary and small, but in Knight it really adds to the scope of the game and I was impressed with the sheer size of it. It's disappointing they had to get all the normal people out, but it felt like a living Gotham with criminals running things.

I wouldn't say 60% is spent in the Batmobile, but I enjoy the Batmobile gameplay, so it's not really a problem for me.

Arkham City had a much worse story and the sidequests all felt like afterthoughts. Honestly, City had the one kind of badass moment at the end in the story and otherwise was very meh for me.

I have more to argue, but we'll save it for the podcast and stop arguing on Matt's blog. He doesn't need this shit :p

I don't really use the power button anymore, since the PS button works as a power button and I tend to keep it off the wire (after my brother told me it was a wireless controller ... like maybe a month ago ... did I ever tell you I skipped last generation?)

Downloads do take too long though. And PSN+ freebies are very hit and miss. they range from "oh neat (Limbo, other critically acclaimed indie games)" to "I can't believe they gave this away for free! (Rocket League)" to "This isn't NORMALLY free? Who the hell is paying $10 or more for this (Gonna refrain from commenting cause maybe other people like my example)"

I love Arkham Knight. I have a feeling you're gonna be less impressed with it but not as unimpressed as Blake.

Madden and Alien Isolation all make me wish I'd have waited to buy my PS4, and I've heard friends rave about ESO.

If I buy an older gen console it'd be a 360. I know that's irrational, cause I could cross-buy stuff for PS3, but I just think I'd enjoy a 360 more.

yeah ESO got kind of trashed when it came out, but apparently they fixed it and my bro loves it.  He's too busy now to play it with me, but I'm gonna try to catch up to where he is.

you honestly used it as a wired controller?  damn man. Laughing

yeah I'm downloading the update for madden now and it's taking a bit. goddammit.

The 360 is a good console. PS3 has some good exclusives, but there was a reason the 360 was so popular.

360 is going for like under $64 refurbished at Gamestop I saw a few months ago. I thought about a second one, and am still thinking about it.

A console for the price of a video game. Hmmm ...

Yea, I thought that price incredible. I didn't think it would ever get that low. Maybe $100 but not lower. Then again, I bought a Dreamcast for $40 not too long after it was defunct. It launched at $199 though, not $399 like X360.

Congrats on the PS4. You should do a review of new Madden. I've made a vow of not buying it for a bit and I got a 2nd (maybe its like 3rd or 4th by now) wind of NCAA Football. I like the new cross media bar but it took a bit of getting used to because I was so used to knowing where everything is with the PS3 XMB. The one thing I wish Sony would bring back is being able to have my own personalized wallpaper.

yeah I'm gonna write a blog about it later today.  So far, I do like it, though in the start you have to go through all this unskippable shit that was making me pull my hair out.  But I played it a little, and I really was impressed by the physics of the players interacting and stuff.  the much hyped new passing stuff seems just like hype to me though.  it sounds more interesting than it actually is.

As long as EA doesn't try and bring back the passing cone, I'll be ok with Madden's passing game.

yeah it's cool.  I just get a little fed up with Madden hype.  I mean, this is "THE FEATURE" of the 2016 edition, but it's really just BS.  That being said, I do like the game.

Yeah that's why I just wait for a price drop on the older version. Places like Operation Sports will have a community roster update and I'm good until the next year.

I need you for Uncharted 4! Yay! Glad ur enjoying the ps4. I haven't played Batman so I really can't say anything on that. Ps+ is gonna have its months where the offerings aren't really good. I highly recommend  Tearaway  on ps4. It releases Sept 8.

U know I've never really been into uncharted.  I'm not sure why.

glad to be part of the ps4 club though!
