Port Royale 3 pirates and merchants is the fourth installment in the buisness simulation game is set in the Caribbean during the 16th and 17th century, created by Kalypso Media and is a PC and Xbox 360 exclusive only,Kalypso which founded Gaming Minds Studios in 2009 after Ascaron Entertainment went bankrupt it combines a buisness simulator with real time battles and towns that can be owned, built, developed or razed. This is the 1st installment of the Port Royale series done by Gaming Minds Studios.

Your main character is a toung spanish commoner who had left his home in Spain to the new world, however when an accident at sea cast him overboard he finds himself in thr city of Port Royale. His life will be changed forever when he meets Elena, the beautiful daughter of the viceroy. How he does this comes in two ways, the path of a Trader or Adventurer which is the two campaigns the Adventurer is by trade buy low sell high and where the economics model shows its stuff, and is the most rewarding due to the fact Kalypso does economics very good and the really cool thing is that the economics fits in to the entire Caribbean so theres no random numbers there actually buying and trading and its effecting the region no matter what your doing,an example say your a pirate and you sink a merchant ship which is headed from Port Royale to the Cayman Islands wwell the goods and gold from Port Royale is lost at the bottom of the sea meaning prices for the goods lost will rise due to the fact they left Port Royale and was neede by Cayman and now the price will increase for the goods lost. In short everything that you do in the game effects the economy, thats why this is a well made buissness sim because its a real functioning economy.

Then theres the Adventure campaign thats geared more for being a pirate with less emphasis on trade, the battles in Port Royale are a steep learning curve to do manually, but you can also auta battle which does a good job as well and speeds up time, and like most pirate games you have the usual raiding and attacking towns, taking sides with a country to get a letter of marqe or just attack everything you want, keep in mind this game is nothing like Sid Miers pirates this is built as a buissness sim and this is what this game is about.

This is an open ended game so you can choose how and what you want to do, there is also a free play mode where you are not constrained to the campaign, there is no online mode on the 360 anyway, not sure about the PC, the graphics are very good I thought the skys ,ocean, tropical colors were gorgeous and I was very impressed with them, the music and voice acting were subperb, the cut scenes are done in a story book kind of way meaning no animations.

So bottom line is I very much enjoyed this game, and its a buisness simulator and as such you have to keep that in mind the most enjoyment to be had is the Trade campaign and its done great, most realistic economics model I have played to date,so once you know what to expect there is two dlc packs released on the 360 .

1, The harbour master.....400 ms points

2, Dawn of pirates.........400 ms points

And bth dlc packs are worth it Harbour master adds more ships and new shops etc for towns, to where Dawn of pirates adds a pirate campaign there both very good and add alot more to the game for a total of 800 ms points you cant go wrong.

So bottom line, this game I highly recommend and I give it a 4 out 5 outstanding.

This game looks really good. I love pretty much anything involving pirates,so I know I would like this one. I like the whole sea battle scenario as well. A ship could be disabled with one good round of cannon fire. It is a lot more complex of a strategy than some folks think. That was a tough way to fight.

You're the man. It was just yesterday I was on Amazon looking at this game and I didn't know anything about it but I thought it looked really interesting. I wanted to know what it was like and I wanted to hear from people who played it and behold you do a blog and review of it lol. I trust your reviews because I know you love strategy games, simulation games, and you have a lot of experience with them. I've never played any of the games in this series before, maybe this is the game to get me into it?

I really want to see the economy system they built for the game. I need to learn more about how these systems work, and it sounds like the people who make Port Royale really know what they're doing. I want to get this game as soon as I can, I believe this will be a perfect type of game for me to have over the summer you know? When things get slow and quiet in the gaming world and we all look for something to play, I'd like to add this game to my collection so I can study it over summer and enjoy it. Love the reviews, keep it up!

Reminds me of a very old game I used to play on the Apple IIe - Taipan. Just found it on the internet. Oh, the nostalgia!
