When it comes to reviews or retrospectives on media like games, music, art etc. there is nothing I hate more than someone declaring what all our tastes should be.

"This IS the greatest in the series." No. Just because you and a good chunk of other people think that doesn't make it a fact. It's still art. Its greatness or lack thereof is always debatable.

I tend to be in the majority with my opinions, but I hate this trend of people trying to tell you why you're wrong or dumb for enjoying something and why what they enjoy makes them intellectually superior somehow. I think thatguywiththeglasses style videos, much as I like them, started this trend.

I'm sick of it.

I love lists of greatest movies of all time. I love hearing different opinions. I find them interesting. But God I hate hearing "this IS a good/bad piece of art." No. You personally think the art in question is good or bad. The people around you may agree or disagree with you to different extents. But the universe does not care and no one has the right to dictate what other peoples' taste should be. That is the epitome of pretension to me.

I like the higher numbers of "greatest" lists.  like 70-100.  That's where stuff I've never heard before usually is.

Yeah, the top picks tend to be pretty conservative. I have never agreed that Jimi Hendrix is necessarily the greatest guitarist of all time. Tongue Out

no, he wasn't the greatest, and I think he admitted that.  there were other guys around the same time or before that he looked up to.  But he was definitely the most unique. His uniqueness doesn't sound so obvious now since we've had a generation of copycats unfortunately.

But like you said, the top bunch are always the same.

More people should listen to Hendrix though.  Love that guy!

I love a few of his songs, I find a few others a bit boring. I appreciate his uniquness though. To be fair, I think ranking musicians is a bit ridiculous from the word go, same with comedians.

My favorite album is his blues album.  Very simple, no multitracking, just him and his band.  On it, it's mostly blues covers, and the design of the album is just pictures of all the blues men he looked up to.  I definitely recommend it.

Is there anything in particular that you took issue with? I hear this a lot of Final Fantasy games.

I recently watched a video of the Disney Infinity guy arguing with Gametrailers on air about why IGN reviewer gave his game an 8 if he was a such a fan and other places gave it a higher score. It was awkward, but it seemed like the reviere didn't want to come off as a fanboy and scored it lower. Reviews scores are a weird business.

Nothing in particular, i just don't like being told what I should enjoy. Pet peeve made into a dumb blog because I'm carrying a lot of glucose right now.

That's interesting about the review scoring. Too much stock is put in that stuff sometimes. I remember actively seeking out games EGM gave 7s to because for some reason those were always really fun for me.

7s arent really bad scores. There are plenty of JRPGs in that score space but it's usually because the anime story is bad or cliche or the reviewer hates anime, but it might have a good battle system, for example. You have to take the written review along with the score, but I generally try to read the review and don't care much for the number. Similarly, there are fanboy reviewers who love anime for example, so they will give a higher score because anime is trashed so much and they feel it needs to be supported, its real.

Yeah, the written reviews were pretty positive. I'm not saying I thought 7s were bad scores, just that I enjoyed them more than games rated higher for whatever reason.

We've had this type of discussion on pixlbit before, basically number scores are dumb and you should take recomendations from reviewers that like the same type of games, that's why I value opinion on here so much. I think Matt Snee, Whatsacow, Transmet and Darthkill, we all like the same type of games so I'm always interested in what they are playing. Oh, and also you Superstep! Cool

I have different tastes from a lot of people on here. It makes the world go round. lol

You should enjoy everything I like because I said so. :) Just kidding!

If you haven't yet, I'd like to encourage you to read my PAX Prime articles on my blog if you get a chance.

I never take "This is the best in the series" that literally. I get they're just saying in their opinion this is the peak. It just flows a lot better than "This is my favorite in the series" for some reason.

That said, I still hate reading that because it's obvious that the hype machine's doing its work and doing it well. We don't get real opinions until at least a month or two later.

I get that. I don't mind it too much in articles or top 10s because I get that they're using definitive statements for both flow and entertainment. I mind it more in what are supposed to be serious reviews, but I get it there too. It still grinds my gears a bit though.

It's when I say I have watched/played/read something recently and think it's alright and someone responds with, more or less, "you're wrong, it's great" that really irritates me.

Well that's the thing, those two scenarios are apples and oranges

I guess it still irks me either way, just moreso in conversation.

I hear you, Joe. When people ask me if a game/book/movie/CD is good, I usually reply with "well, I liked it", because whether or not I like something has nothing to do with whether it's "good". Take the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, for example. That's a seriously bad movie no matter how one looks at it, but I love it anyway. Then there are the critically acclaimed movies like Forrest Gump that everyone else seems to love and I found to be a huge waste of two and a half hours of my time. I think i even fell asleep at one point, I was so bored. But everyone who loved it is always telling me I'm wrong because I didn't like it.

I thought Forrest Gump was ok, but still don't get the massive hype around it.

I think it resonated most with Baby Boomers.

Maybe, but the people I see raving about it are my age, not baby boomers.

I'm able to seperate execution from personal taste. I resolutely believe that somethings are just objectively poorly/well made according to well established standards of craft...but so what?  I care about what is interesting to me, not what is most technically proficient. I get the feeling that some people want to be in some kind of taste "in crowd, " what with their appeals to consensus and flaunting how they play this 10/10 game or that.  Also the attitude of "you're missing out if you haven't played _______ because it's the hot shit right now." That's not how I make my choices. E.g. I don't care if Fallout 4 will be more "significant" than Dragon Quest Heroes, I have my eye on the latter.

Agreed. I'm one of those that can revel in how bad something is, like The Room, and enjoy it for that reason. I can admit that it's not a good example of the film-making craft, but at the same time I appreciate its ineptitude in an Ed Wood kind of way. I'll admit Inception is a much better-made film, just don't tell me I have to personally enjoy watching it more.

There's some criteria for objectivity, but as many have pointed out (including my favorite gaming youtuber, Totalbiscuit), nothing can truly be 100% objective. Although I do see "best of" lists to discover stuff, I always go to whatever floats my boat. Man of Steel may be hated in some circles, but I did really like it regardless of the negative opinion. Over here after seeing Snee's blog of WB and his opinion with Daftman's of the Watchmen movie being subpar in the comments, it's still among my favorite films of all-time and honestly, i'm fine with them not being into it.

It helps to see the varied opinions, but for me, it's better to try something and form your own opinion.

Man of Steel still sucks, but I respect your opinion that it doesn't.
