FFXIII - Brynhildr Goes Down

Last night was awesome. I finally managed to beat Brynhildr.

I spent another half hour grinding, doing laps betwen the save points just before the two boss fights (Midlight Reaper is the one right before Brynhildr). When I got Haste in the Crystarium for Sazh I knew it was time to try again. In my last post asrealasitgets mentioned Haste, so that was a good sign.

Anyway, I concentrated on buffing and debuffing with Tide Turner [Synergist/Saboteur], attacking with Dualcasting [Ravager/Ravager] and healing with potions boosted by the Doctor's Code accessory and Brynhildr went down in 2:01. The target said 20:06 but I don't see how you could last that long since Sazh gets hit with Doom at the beginning of the fight and the counter above him counts down fast, so if you don't beat Brynhildr in less than three minutes, you drop dead as soon as it hits zero. Maybe there is a way to cancel Doom?

Anyway, it was a big deal for me winning that battle. Felt so badass! Now I can't wait to get back to it to find out what happens next...

What are you all playing right now? Anybody having troubles with obnoxious bosses?

Congratulations:  I can relate to beating a boss like that. It's very satisfying

I should clarify what I meant about FF13 not preparing you for boss fights. If you go through regular enemies, I think you can rely on Auto-attack for a majority of it. You can switch through paradigms and auto-attack, but for some tough enemies and boss fights you have to sort through the individual commands and use buffs and debuffs and so forth. Not just attack-attack-attack. I haven't played 13 in a while and my mind thinks of 13-2, but I think bosses are supposed to be staggered first then attacked with commando or something like that. In any case, I remember Hope getting Haste sooner in his crystarium and thus stayed in my party for that reason for most of the game. Sahz is a great party member after he gets Haste in my opinion, but he gets it later in his crystarium if I remember correctly. Anyhow, it's an awesome feeling when  you start learning the games combat system and start taking down bosses like a boss. It's a bit hazy nowadays. Anyhow, I remember using Fang a lot with her Sentinel ability and Hope for Haste and Lightning for Commando. I mixed it up, but I played them a lot . Lightning/Hope/Fang.Cool

Yeah Sazh gets Haste pretty late, although I did switch over from focussing on his Commando Paradigm to Sentinel in the Crystarium, in order to get more de/buffs, so I probably could have got Haste earlier. And as for Hope getting it faster, the thing with the Brynhildr fight is you've only got access to Sazh and Vanille at that point.

Yeah you're right about autobattle being good for most regular enemies, but still, as you know the further into the game you get, the more complex it gets, even with normal fights. I read some criticism of FFXIII recently, the person basically saying FFXIII is shit because all you do is hit a button to fight - it's boring. That may be true for the first few hours but it's only like that to ease you into what becomes a pretty deep and complex battle system. If all FFXIII was about battle-wise was 'autopilot', I sure as hell wouldn't have had any trouble with Brynhildr.

Anyway, thanks again for your comments. They really helped me out :]

I forgot Sahz and Vanille are seperated from the group at this point and you only have two person party.  Boss fights do get harder though. Some people quit earlier than you have.Cool

Somebody on a forum (maybe here?) recently mentioned about FFXIII that they got to the final boss and got killed in three seconds or something, and was so disgusted they walked away and didn't go back. I seem to be almost halfway into the game, so a long way until I find out about that boss, but I wasn't gonna let Brynhildr force me to quit. I wanna get up to the point I've read about where you get dropped in the open world with total freedom all of a sudden. It was from a totalplaystation review I printed out last week... "I got literal goosebumps upon landing in the "true" world that takes up FFXIII's second half..." - Sam Bishop

Yes. The first 10 chapters or so are very linear, forward moving stages- like FF10 maybe. There is a point where you get dropped off in one enormous large area, where I spent like 10 hours or more just grinding and you will find enemies way above your levels just roaming around. It's sort of like a mini MMO type level, or large open world if you will. I think it's Chapter 11. Just keep going.Cool
