A Bit of Back Story - skip at your own leisure

I'm a big fighting game fan (not that i'm any good IMO) ever since the arcade days, i never got those Street Fight II blisters from the SNES days (my big brother suffered that) and and for the longeest time i felt my most comfortable with a joystick in hand.

But that was in the 90s (good times Cool)

During the 2000s I finally got my own home consoles using the standard controllers for fighting games i had to relearn a lot (and with small hands too) it was fine but I was never as comfortable as back in the good old days... But then I got a Wii and PS3

A couple of Fighting games later Tatsunoko vs Capcom was released I lost it and bought on release months later I owned this for £30 (about $50)

Made by Madcats It worked Great i use it every now and then... but something felt... off.

Last week I went to one of those used electronics shops CeX (Computer Exchange) and I found Capcom vs SNK 2 EO on the GC for £6 ($10) "Bought" I said I walked to another Game shop and would would I find but a used PS3 Hori Arcade Fightstick for £30 where brand new it would be twice as much

I bought it, played some games and like the TvC one it worked great... but it still felt wrong.

Untill today Smile

What does any of that pretensious story above have to do with modding my Fightstick?

Well after repeated sucking at KOF 13 I was reminded at the last game convension I went to were they would Mod your fightstick, I opened up the back of my Fightstick and I was struck by realization. And it hurt.

"THIS PEOPLE!!" :(

This crappy piece of plastic has been the bane of my Fighting game existance, to put it simply it's called a "Gate" a square one to be more exact this particular one is in every Madcats FightStick (am I writing that too often?) the Hori design is far more restrictions to alter and a different shape.

I bought an OCTAGONAL GATE - LS56 LS5601 on the cheap

I found out is wasn't the right size but a sharp knife later, the repositioning of screws and a little trial and error I'm Bombastic Happy Laughing

It feels even better I can Half-Circle Punch with the best of them, every move feels easy were as before it always felt fixed to the corners, it's a huge improvement I tell you.

Anyone with a fightstick (seven times!) get that Octagonal Gate, I assure you it will up your game, I can't garantee you'll find a Hori designed one but a MadCats design is far more common. It should look like this.

(P.S. I also realised that those Square gates are the same as the ones used in many arcade machines back then so most of what I said was Nostalgic bullcrap Tongue Out)

Somehow I remember reading this. Don't think it would help my fighting game though. I'm completely rubbish at fighters.

There's a Street Fighter X Sanrio arcade fight stick out now that I kinda want.

Yes I said Sanrio.  Hello Kitty characters dressed as Street Fighters.

I think i saw the toys of those but refused to buy out of shame of liking themTongue Out

MadCatz if i'm not mistaken, a pricey piece but fantastic quallity. It's slightly heavy so if you do get it, expect some leg numbing Laughing

I probably won't get it, but it isn't out of shame.  I have none. :)

I suck at fighting games. I can admit it. Still own several of them. Mostly Soul Calibur and Dead Or Alive titles. I don't understand how folks pull off those elaborate combos. The kind where you have to hit like 8 different buttons. I'm literally a hack!

It's alot like dancing, you need a sense of rhythm and creativity. That way you create your own playing style.Cool

I always just played with regular controllers and never had any issues, but I guess it would be nice to take home the arcade experience; I laughed at your knife and trial and error bit, sounded a bit like a cartoon character fixing something the cheapest way possible. lol But hey, it worked!

Hohoho! You know, i forgot to add "and a little bit of elbow grease", Glad i did though, that would have aged me rapidly Surprised

Anywho, i wasn;t about to let my purchase go to waist so DIY!! I like the anolgue just fine too, but it feels a lot different with Fightstick, it's just right.Laughing

I also have a Fightpad for the PS3, one that looks like the saga saturn controler. Those where great for fighting games and it's my older brother's preference.Smile

I remember the first time I played the original Soul Calibur at an arcade. I did so much better! The controls were a lot more tight and easier to use. That can be a great thing with those control pads you talked about.

There is a definate benefit, fingers are much faster than thumb for instance. I used to get finger cramps though due to my small handsEmbarassed
