What Game Series Would You Bring Back from the Dead??

So. I was wondering. If you could resurrect one game series from the dead, what would it be?  I thought about this one for a long time. There's a bunch of series there haven't been sequels, great games that just kind of faded into history for one reason or another. Crash Bandicoot, Project Gotham Racing, Faxanadu (Laughing), the list goes on.

But if I could have the awesome power to bring anything back, you know what I would bring back?  a new vector-based Star Wars game, with levels from the rest of the original trilogy, and maybe from the new trilogy.  I spent A LOT of time playing the sit-in version of Star Wars, and there's nothing else that quite captured the film as that experience.  Plus, I just love vector-based graphics.  Some indies use the style, like Geometry Wars, but I wish there were more games inspired by that look.

That's a little far fetched though, so I'll set my sights a little lower:  A new Final Fantasy Tactics game.  We got versions of it for GBA and DS, but it would be great to get a new, adult one with the level of depth of the original.  I dream of that.  Games like Banner Saga are great, but they just lack the depth and fun of that classic.

So, what would YOU bring back?

Faxanadu, Terranigma, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Wave Race, Drill Dozer. Can't think of any other off the top of my memory.

I can't say I know anything about any of those except for Wave Race!

Faxanadu hasn't really died.  It's actually part of a game series by Falcom called Xanadu.  It was called Faxanadu because it was on the Famicom (NES in Japan), therefore, Fa-xanadu.  I think Falcom made a new Xanadu game on the PC a few years ago.

After playing Freedom Planet, I'd like to see thsoe developers resurrect Ristar.

Sony and Microsft, you want me to buy a Xbox One or PS4?  Ger Capcom to release Mega Man Legends 3 on your consoles.  Sony, if you make Loco Roco 3, I'll get a Vita or PS4 or whatever system it's on.

Except Faxanadu was developed by Hudson Soft, the Xanadu games sound nothing like Faxanadu, and they're not side-scrollers.

Ristar!  I remember that game!

Valkyrie Profile and Castlevania 2D. Lightning Returns and Resonance of Fate were nice throwbacks to the VP mechanics, but I wish it were used more, as much as I wish we had more games that copied Shadow of the Colossus, which is another game I want to see more of.

Looks like we're getting Shadow of the Colossus. We're also getting Bloodstained so that's close enough. If you want classic-vania though check out Komajou Densetsu II.  You'll probably have to get it from a torrent site or something since it's not available in the west and you'll have to patch it, but it's really gosh darn good. It's a straight up clone though - even stealing enemies.

I had part of a Valkyrie Profile until the UMD got messed up.  seemed like a cool game though.

I think VP still stands up today. The sequel was good too, as was Resonance and Lightning Returns, although I think you hated LR so nevermind.

yeah i couldn't get into LR.  I tried though, and I think I may still have it.

Ultima. How it should have continued, which is by building on Ultima 7 (which no one has really done in a couple of key areas) and pushing the RPG genre forward once again.  Look at they were doing in 1992 with world building and NPCs and then imagine that evolving all the way up until now!

you know, I never played an Ultima game, but I remember looking at ads for it in comic books when I was a kid.  I wouldn't mind playing a new one. HEard great things.

I would say Castlevania but we're getting Bloodstained now and that will probably suffice. I'd picked instead one of Konami's other many dead franchises: Contra. I frickin' love Contra and we haven't gotten a new 2D entry since, what, Contra 4 in '07? *FACT CHECK* Okay, there was Contra ReBirth on WiiWare in 2009...and it was a fun game! Come on, Konami, just sell the rights to WayForward and be done with it (I can dream lol)

We got a bunch of Castlevanias for DS that weren't bad from what I understand.  The 3DS one... not so good.  Stupid Konami.

Fair enough. I'd bring back Jak and Daxter. Or Metroid.

Yay for Metroid!

Crash Bandicoot by Naughty Dog. Or Sanzaru or Sucker Punch. I just want another great Crash game.

an HD Crash game would be great!

Shadow Hearts and Suikoden.

You know, I've never played Shadow Hearts but I mean to acquire it to go with the rest of my PS2 JRPG collection.

Shadow Hearts Covenant is the best of the three but you kind of have to play the first one first. The first game's biggest problem is that it looks a lot like it could have been a PS1 game.

yeah PS2 graphics are hit and miss.  I don't mind though.  I had always hoped that more PS2 games would be ported to Vita or something so I can play them on a handheld.  That dream died hard.

NCAA Football. EA was doing some good things before they cancelled the series. Teambuilder was great because you got to upload your own logos, and customize your uniforms, Within the game being able to move teams to different conferences, having uniform updates as DLC, and letting fans download name rosters made the game.

I wish some of these features were available on Madden.

what fuck was I thinking?  I want NFL2K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2K games were so much fun on the Dreamcast. I was partial to baseball, hockey, and basketball. I didn't really appreciate 2K football until 2K5 on the PS2

Matt Snee Staff Writer

I still have 2 copies of 2k5.  Bought it a couple years ago when I moved to Arizona, then noticed later I still had my original copy too.  Loved that game.  I don't know if it was 5 or not, but in one of them, you could set the music to "classic" and it would play like orchestral like football music like they do during NFL films.  What genius.

I need to see if the 2K games I own have that music feature. That is freaking awesome.

Valkyria Chronicles on a console, not like the sequel that came to PSP. I want to see the gorgeous water color art style and that active time battle system again. Also, Crimson Skies. I need a flight combat game that controls like that again. Nothing has been as good since.

Amen on Valkyria Chronicles, man!

Rival Schools.

Bust a Groove.

A PROPER goddamn Star Fox, none of this out-of-Arwing horseshit.

I want to say I had another one, but not sure what it was.

Read Void Crusade by the way. I'll be honest, I always get nervous reading something by someone I know in case I don't like it, but it was really good! Needs more backstory on the prostitute though.

Hey I'm glad you liked it man!  And don't be nervous, if you hadn't liked it, I would have understood.  it's kind of a niche thing.  But I'm glad you enjoyed it.  I keep promising fans of it I'm gonna write more star wars soon but it hasn't happened yet!

There are so many, but I'd like to bring back Bomber Man and Klonoa. Other than that perhaps I would love to bring back Mega Man (He might as well be dead the way Capcom is) and Viewtiful Joe.

Matt Snee Staff Writer

10/28/2015 at 11:19 AM

you know, I've never played Viewtiful Joe.  I've heard such great things about it though. That would be cool to come back as a new 3DS game or something.

Parasite Eve, but bring it back to its RPG roots, not the action/survival horror thing it became.  After I played the first one, I envisioned the sequel as an expanded RPG with a full party (not just Aya, but her squad-mates as well).  There aren't many RPGs set in a modern city like New York (they're usually either fantasy or futuristic sci-fi).  Anyway, I was kind of disappointed in the Resident Evil-ish Parasite Eve 2.  I didn't hate 3rd Birthday as much as a lot of people (though I never got too far into the game), but probably mostly because I was just thankful that SquareEnix revisited the series, and was already resigned to the fact that they were never going to make the RPG I wanted.

Man, I totally forgot about Parasite Eve.  I'm gonna download that on my Vita and chill.  That's on PSN right?  I hope so!
