Where Would You Like to Go in a Video Game??

Games have taken us to some pretty amazing places: the distant future, the distant past, far off into space, far into fantasy worlds, to amazing places of the present, and to amazing places that will never exist outside the realms of our imaginations. But is there a place you want to go that video games have yet to represent?

If given time, I could probably come up with thousands of places/times/worlds that I'd like to go to in a video game.  But I'll limit my dreams to just a few for this blog.

One place I'd like to go more is revolutionary and colonial era America. Sure, we've had a few games in this period, but not many good ones.  I'd also like to see a Wild West RPG in the vein of Fallout.  The Wild West isn't completely un-represented, but it could stand a few more games, I think.

I'd also like to see more games take place in exotic locales of the present world, like India, or China, or South America.  Games can take us far.

As far as licensed places, I would like to experience an HD, current gen game that takes place in the Dragonlance world of Krynn.  We had a few games here when I was a kid, but it's a great, deep world, and I think it would make for a great video game.

I'd also like to see a game that takes place during the Napoleonic wars, or maybe a Joan of Arc game, or a Henry the Fifth era game.  I'm fascinated by those time periods.

I'd also like to see more Star Trek games. It's a very deep universe, and I think it's kind of underrepresented in games.

Finally, I'd like to see more fantasy games that are less LOTR inspired.  I love elves and magic, but we've seen it a thousand times by now, and there are rich, rich fantasy worlds just begging to be experienced.  Imagine a Wizard of Oz RPG, or a Dragon Riders of Pern adventure game.

The possibilities are limitless.

Where would you like to go?

There's so many. Both are on Earth.

Since I've been focused more on a certain universe lately I will say that I would love a Battle Angel Alita game. A recovered, super developed, post apocalyptic future where there are planetary/lunar factions in the solar system. A world where cyborgs are a common thing, and all you need is your brain intact to exist. Also imortality tech exists. Of course I would love to play as Alita.

Berserk world. A terrifying medievil era where demons and monsters live either secluded or hiding in plain sight, and that at some point due to an event that the main character (Guts) endured all these creatures are now visible to every human. Guts wields this massive sword, has an arm cannon, and eventually gets this badass armor that helps him wreck everything around him and himself.

I'm not sure if I've seen Alita or not.  Kind of sounds familiar, but I may be thinking of something else.

Massive sword and arm cannon?  Sign me up.

If you have a Dreamcast you can try and find https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_the_Berserk:_Guts%27_Rage, as it was released in the US. I'm fine witrh just waiting for a Dynasty Warriors release with the appropriate skin.

Fantasy - Jim Henson/Hayao Miyazaki style. More individual approaches to the genre. Less dwarves/elves/orcs.

But I want more real world games. That don't involve time travel, the occult, sci-fi or any other "geek candy." This so called 'artform' has had little to say about the world as it is.

real world games are difficult.  it's hard without that geek hook.  My example, and you probably won't like it, is Heavy Rain, a game I really liked. So it is possible.  I'd like to see more real world games too.

And yes to the Fraggle Rock / Dark Crystal game!

I think Rockstar are the lead example of taking the real world and making somethign interesting from it. They really shined during the PS2 era. Manhunt was about as creepy as any game with monsters in it.  Bully was as whimsical as any fairy tale or cartoon. Two highly underrated games, btw.

I didn't like Manhunt, but boy did Bully have a GREAT soundtrack.

I'd like to be under the sea, in an octopus's garden in the shade

Sharkey and George are the crime busters of the sea as is my understanding.

I liked the 40s period when I played Godfather and Mafia II. It seems like that there isn't a lot of games within that era (I wasn't really looking). I'd like to play another sandbox game during that era.

I enjoyed LA NOire, but I think that was 1950s.   I'm not sure though, can't remember. I like that era too.

I don't know about real locations, but I agree with you on other cultures like South American or Asian, but I would love to explore horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween etc. I know some games were made with the licenses, but I wouldn't mind a walking simulator type game that takes place in those worlds. Maybe also Scream. There is also an MMO based on Jane Austin novels, where you live in her world or something which sounds interesting. Yeah, worlds based on books.

Nightmare on Elm Street game would be great!  Since dreams are involved, you could pretty much do anything!

How about Jules Verne's version of under the earth's surface? I like "outdated" versions of the unknown. It gives the same sort of vibe as steampunk or something, but it hasn't been done as much. C.S. Lewis's version of Venus and Mars from his Out of the Silent Planet books would also be some crazy landscapes...

Seems like I want to play novels as games. Huh.

I like outdated ideas of the unknown too. That's kind of the major theme of my space opera novels.  Hollow Earth, life on Venus, crazy shit like that I love.

I haven't read those CS Lewis books but I keep meaning to.  They seem cool.

Those books are pretty strange. I read them so far apart from each other too, so it made them seem even stranger. Think I read the first when I was about 12, the second when i was 13 or 14, and the last one sometime in my late twenties or early thirties. The last book has some eerily prescient things in it. I mean, after wacky Mars and Venus from the first books, he basically predicts wikipedia and that communists would re-animate a human head -- which there is a video of from the 1950s. (or a different decade, I'm not sure). Anyway, they are really interesting sci-fi/spiritual/political novels. Very unique!

Regardless, we should be able to walk around that version of Venus and Mars.

Every time I read a non fiction book, I want a 3D virtual environment of it to play in. I wish that could be done, but it's so darn expensive to create these environments, it'll never happen. We do have Assassin's Creed to give us some time periods to mess around in. I really like sea adventures. There could be games made out of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, or Darwin's voyages, Magellan's, Marco Polo, Columbus, those South Pacific Islanders I forget the name of.

I think anything that involves freely sailing the sea is great.  That is just really romantic to me.

How about being a deck hand, and the challenge is to rig the sails correctly in various situations of weather and manuevering. Or you could be the captian and have to manage your crew to do their jobs correctly. I think I played a demo of one of the Assassin's Creed games where I walked around a sailing ship and was amazed at the level of detail.

yeah my brother played it and I watched some.  When I was a kid I played a lot of Sid Meier's Pirates.  Great game back then.  hasn't aged well.

I replayed that recently and still loved it. It did strike me that it avoided some of the nastier aspects of that time and place in history.

it's just a bit simplistic.  A modern version with more depth would be killer.

As for a real life area, I always wanted to go to Japan. Whether it's the futuristic dystopian versions or more realistic in terms of Yakuza or Shen Mue. As for strictly fantasy well I'd say pokemon would be cool.

a more realistic, like SKyrim like Pokemon would float my boat.

For a real life place to visit in a video just an open world modern Japan. Sure there are other places but I want to see the sites that some video games cut out. As for ficitional places I'd would have to say the anime worlds of Pokemon. Sure they're more like the real world but there aren't THAT many buildings in the games that you can actually enter.

I've always thought a more realistic Pokemob world would be fascinating

I like non-Tolkien/TSR fantasy worlds myself (never was a fan of LOTR or D&D myself), but I think Japan more than has that pretty well covered, and in ways I enjoy. One fantasy world I think would make a great RPG is The Stand, by Stephen King. He did say that The Stand was his version of LOTR set in contemporary America. The Dark Tower universe would make a good game in the right hands.

As far as space goes, I'd like to see more efforts in that area that have no ties to either Star Wars or Star Trek, and not a MMO like EVE Online or Star Citizen (which is looking more and more like it's going to set a record as the most colossal Kickstarter failure in history, anyway), either. Just an open-universe space-exploration RPG along the lines of an EA PC game I played when I was young called Starflight, only with modern technology, with some aliens and combat thrown in.

Real world settings: How about visiting an area of the United States that isn't New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago? What about Texas? Arizona? Tennessee?

I'd also like to see an RPG set in the prehistoric era, with Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons fighting cave lions, mammoths and each other.
