Not much going on in the gaming end of things lately. Spent most of the last two weeks getting ready for the annual three day trip I refer to as the "Ranger Retreat" at friend/neighbor/co-worker/honorary little brother Michael's family's camp with Michael and Andy. Normally, I get Jason to stay at the cottage with the pets, but he was starting a new job and his days off changed. This meant cleaning and tidying the cottage for the pet sitter, as well as working and getting ready for the trip.

Kaylee helps with the packing.

The camp is on an island and there are only two ways to get to it: take a boat or hike in four miles and make a river crossing. I'm not much for boats and it's a bit cold at the end of October if the canoe tips over, so we hike in. The camp has no electricity, no running water, no phone, and no cell service. It does have peace, quiet, wildlife, gas lights, and an awesome fireplace. We go up there to unplug and de-stress. There are tabletop games to play, lots of books, and an island to explore. At night, there were only three other lights visible on the lake from the camp. Hiking in, we saw a deer who let us get pretty close.

Once we got there, Michael was getting the gas turned on and pilot lights lit, I was putting away food, and Andy went out to split firewood, and we had a barred owl practically right over head hooting at us. After we got organized, we had dinner and got the fire going. Later, we went out to watch the full moon over the water.

The next day, we alternated between camp chores, hanging out in front of the fireplace, and exploring before the rain started. I took some flak for bringing my 3DS and running around in Animal Crossing watering my flowers. Hey, I didn't want to lose my hybrids! It didn't take long for my battery to die, so they weren't able to make fun of me for long.

The last day, I heard loons calling on the lake in the early morning in the mist and rain. The hike back out was a bit damp, but it had stopped raining and it had gotten freakinshly warm. We hiked in wearing sweaters and wool hats, and hiked out in t-shirts. Oh, and I can say with absolute certainty that yes, bears really do shit in the woods. There was lots of it in the trail. After we were off the trail, we bumped into the park manager for the local state park and he gave us a ride back to where we'd parked the car, saving us half an hour of hiking along the road. Gotta love ranger solidarity!

Playing: Animal Crossing, still. Also started getting back into Tales of Zestiria. I'm still not very far in, but loving it so far. I was bad and bought myself a $25 Live card and picked up Costume Quest 2 and the Antman table for Pinball FX2. I have yet to play Costume Quest 2, but I foresee an all-day gaming day coming in my very near future. I did play Antman a few times, enough to beat Cary's high score (he was at the top of my friends list for this table), but unfortunately I was offline when I did, so I don't know if it will show up.

Reading: Finished The Gray Horse and started rereading Joel Rosenberg's Not For Glory. It's a favorite. I have another book set in the same universe called Hero, which is sort of a sequel. Apparently, there's a prequel out there that I haven't read, so I'll have to track it down and read that one, too.

Watching: Almost caught up with Supernatural and Agents of Shield, and working on catching up on The Originals. Made Jason watch Finding Nemo with me last week. One of those movies that I knew he'd like if he ever gave it a chance. Our favorites were the lobsters and the seagulls. The lobsters needed a bigger role.

Listening: in the CD player over the last week or so: Song of the Sea - Julia Lane, Best Shots - Pat Benetar.

So long, Pixlbit Nation. I'm off to buy food for the week and hopefully find my water bottle that I left at work last night.

Those hybrids aren't gonna water themselves. What are people thinking?

I know, right?!

It should be easy to beat my high score in those pinball games. I don't try too hard, and I'm not very good either.  I just reviewed a set of Pinball FX2 tables based on cartoons I don't like. :)

Were those the Fox ones? I don't like those cartoons, either.

KnightDriver and I have a friendly rivalry when it comes to pinball games. It's half the fun of playing them.

Oh that cottage on an island sounds dreamy. I haven't been camping in so long and I think about it all the time. I was actually thinking today how I could live out of a tent or something similar, 'cause I would. If I had a house and some land, I'd probably set up a tent in the back yard and sleep there. That's how I roll, my bedroll that is.

Anyway, it also sounds like a great walking simulator. I'd like to take video footage of that location and render it in an engine for a game.

It's a bit more than a cottage, more like a lodge. And there are several little cabins on the island, as well, but none of them have a heat source. And all of the photos from our trip on on my FB page. The scenery is pretty awesome. The area was heavily glaciated, so there are boulders everywhere, and I suspect that the island is really a boulder pile that gathered a bit of soil over time and eventually started supporting vegetation. Michael's great (or maybe two greats) grandfather had the place built in 1889, so there's a bit of history, too.

I respect doing that sort of chillin, but it's hard for me to unplug. Plus, I like indoor plumbing.  I can do without electricity, but I love having a toilet.  I'm a civilized wuss.  Tongue Out

The outhouse is actually pretty civilized. Nice toilet seats and kept impeccably clean. If you make sure to toss sawdust over what you just left, it keeps things from getting smelly.

I need to take a trip like this. This Randi Zuckerberg book a Warner Bros. exec gave us on our L.A. trip talked about cyber vacations, where teens etc. would go without any technology for a weekend. Could use one of those. Felt like it at the Motel 6 in Shreveport. Shittiest hotel we've stayed at yet. No free wi-fi. No fridge. No microwave. Tiny TV with maybe a quarter of usual basic cable channels. Made me realize I didn't truly miss the 90s that much. lol But an outdoors vacation would probably be nicer. Not to mention, I bet dirt ground would be softer than that damn bed.

I'd probably bring stuff like a 3DS too though. haha

That deer is cute. Ever seen the very not cute Louis C.K. bit about how he feels about those majestic creatures after one hit his car?

Here in Texas, you hear loons yelling EVERY morning. Laughing

They got that pinball game on PS4? Could use some friendly competition.

Why didn't Jason want to watch Finding Nemo? Don't remember it too well, but I thought it was good.

Love Pat Benatar.

It was an awesome trip. And we have mattresses once we get to camp, so no sleeping on the dirt. As for Louis C. K., not familiar with his stand up. I generally don't watch much comedy. As for the pinball game, it's known as Zen Pinball on PSN, but I don't know if it's available for the PS4. Jason just hadn't seen it before, and he doesn't usually watch animated movies unless I make him. He usually enjoys them, though.

FAIR WARNING: It gets a little blue; by which I mean he dives deep into the blue ocean of offensiveness, swims there for a bit and at one point finds a viperfish down there and befriends it.

Oh, my. Yes, that was a tad offensive...but I loved every second of it! I think I may have said similar things when I had one come out of the marsh and bounce off the corner of my bumper when my truck was brand spanking new. At least it didn't do any damage to my truck, and the deer just kept going. Although, I did want to ask why he didn't just get a hunting license... My sister got her deer while I was up at camp, and she messaged me last night to tell me she saved me about a pound and a half of stew meat. Mmm! Venison stew!

I dunno if a hunting license would help Louis C.K. much. lol I haven't tried deer. That I remember. Or know of .... Undecided

Sounds like you had a grand old time. Good to see that you are doing well! I wish I had someone around who could go on a trip like this with me, but everyone is just super busy.

Hey Kevin! How's life up there in the Great White North? As for the trip, it's an annual tradition for the three of us, kind of a reward for surviving another season working at the park.

Life is good up here. Surprisingly warm for a November!

Same here on the coast of Maine. We're enjoying it, but we're all wondering when the payback will hit.

Those are some awesome pictures, thanks for sharing!

Your trip sounds like a lot of fun, but I'd be iffy on the whole no cell service. It just feels weird to not have my cell phone with me. Since I'm late I hope you already found your water bottle.

Thanks! I'm especially pleased with that last one I posted here.

Unplugging is hard at first, but it was nice to get back into more natural rhythms. And I did find my water bottle. Which I have since left there several more times. Good thing it's distinctive and everybody recognizes it.
