So like most people here I buy way too many games. I also swore off Nintendo (not because I'm a hater, I just moved on) sold my first 3ds and decided the Wii U had nothing to offer. With some tax money and some extra cash I had saved I bought the Blue 3DS XL. Wait a minute didn't I just write a blog on getting some games at Target. Yes, yes I did. I also bought a new system that day with my games and am having an absolute blast with Mario again. I haven't dug into Sticker Star yet but am enjoying Castlevania. I'm also a sucker for Mickey so I had to pick up Epic Mickey Castle of Illusion.
I'm almost through the 2nd section/Chapter of Epic Mickey (I'm assuming from the reviews there's only 3). This game is absoultely charming and fun. It's not very difficult but very satisfying to find the disney characters and send them to the "safe house". Sorry can't remember the real word, but you get my point. There are little quests to find people and items which really only involve visiting other characters in their rooms in the safe house. Not challenging, but cute/fun. It's also a pleasure to have Scrooge and Donald in there. Donald cracks me up. He's always angry so he makes that crazy quack. The paint mechanic is fun and slightly repetitive in that there are only 4 items so far to paint or thin out. A cannon, block, magic carpet, and one I can't remember. Anyway if you're into simple fun, this is worth it.
Ahhh, yet there is more to my video game buying frenzy. Another wild hair and I bought the last Zombi U deluxe edition of the Wii U at my local gamestop. I've been wanting to try Zombi U since I heard about it. I didn't expect anything steller but was still DYING to play it. Added to this it comes with Nintendo Land and a pro controller. Suddenly it was again easy for me to blow money.
As far as the system, so far I'm impressed. I love the fact that the Wii motion controls are absent. There is a channel you have to pick on the main screen to play your Wii games and use those gimicky controls. So yes I was ecstatic to find that hooking up the sensor bar is pointless unless I'm playing the old games. It's also nice to program the game pad to control the TV. Not necessary but convenient to not have to reach for the remote and pause the game just to turn up the volume.
The game pad is actually comfortable to hold and play with. It's not heavy at all. The 360 controller feels the same weight if not slighly heavier to me. At times when the room was dark while playing, the screen on the game pad was a little distracting, but not terrible. It was just different.
I am really enjoying the play style of Zombi U. The gamepad is used to control the map, use radar, manage items in your backpack, and use items in game. This is integrated very well into gameplay. It took a while to get used to, but it definetly felt like the next step up the gaming ladder in play and integrated experience. The speaker on the game pad is also cool. Throughout the game there is a guy monitoring the building I'm in via camera helping me to get around a survive. His voice comes through the gamepad instead of the TV screen. Believe it or not this actually made me feel more like I was trying to survive my surroundings. I have no other way to describe it but my " first person character" became more tangible than I have experienced before. Weird, ambiguous description but I don't know how else to explain it.
I don't see the Wii U becoming immensly popular quickly. It is obviously going to depend on the game developers and how they use the gamepad in "useful" ways and it will depend of how developers decide not to use it. We shall see what happens. The Wii U doesn't have to be the next big gimmick. It could be revolutionary, but the verdict is still out.
