A New Flavor of Reviews at PixlBit

As I'm sure most of you have noticed, content production from the PixlBit staff has been a bit thin for a while now. While none of us wanted it to turn out that way, the reality is that life has gotten in the way and made it extraordinarily challenging to continue producing content while dealing with our other responsibilities. In an effort to combat that, we've rolled out a new type of review that's meant to be more informal and shorter form. These reviews will not provide a typical five star score, but rather a recommendation of Buy/Try/Avoid, clearly laying out what we think is worth your money and what is not.

Our first recommendation is now live courtesy of Matt Snee and it's on the heartwrencher, That Dragon, Cancer. Tomorrow I'll have one posted for Saints Row IV: Re-Elected, with more to follow soon.

Don't take this to mean that the standby five star format is ancient history. We'll continue to also produce more traditional reviews when the mood strikes or the game really calls for the format. Please, let us know what you think about the new recommendations and if there's any other type of content that you think is worthwhile for us to cover!

Enjoy,
- Nick

I like it. Buy/Try/Avoid sounds good. I never gave much attention to review scores anyway.

Very cool - we'll probably still have scored reviews drop on the site, depending on the title, but I've always wanted to give the recommendation idea a shot and see how well it was received. Glad you dig it!

I've always preferred the buy/rent/avoid type scores myself. Star systems leave a lot up to interpretation, sometimes I just want to know whether and how much a reviewer'd be willing to pay.

I think the starred score and the recommendation serve two different purposes, ultimately. For all realistic purposes, I think it takes more time than we usually have to produce a truly analytic review of game. It's much easier and usually more closely representative of what we've played to provide a recommendation over a review.

Review scores? What are those? Buying? I avoid games until they go on sale to try them. I know y'all are busy, but I wouldn't mind some more indie game coverage.

I usually wait to buy games as well. And we're not really going after review copies like we used to, so it makes it even tougher to get comprehensive coverage on the latest stuff dropping.

I think a lot of us are playing indie games, so hopefully we can double down on our indie game coverage!

"I think a lot of us are playing indie games, so hopefully we can double down on our indie game coverage!"

And PS+ also offers some nice games too every once in a while.

We need a fourth recommendation of Peter You Don't Need Anymore Games!

I'll have it replace Peter with the current user who's signed in because I think this applies to most of us!

We're about to have a fight over Saints Row, aren't we?

Only if you think it's not totally awesome :)

LOL, where's the damn Like button?

Why no "Shoplift" option? It would be like a Try and a half.

There should also be a "kill your mama for it" for really good games.

Ahaha, that reminds me, I really need to get that "like" button for comments going.
