Platform: Arcade

Released: 1991

Developer: Nintendo, Konami

Genre: Mini-game

This little-known arcade game was released only in Japan. It was developed by Nintendo and Konami (who made the machines). The graphics are pulled directly from Super Mario World and the entire game is based on the bonus game of said game. So, believe it or not, this is a Mario gambling game, probably the only one. However, this shouldn't be too surprising since slot machines are very popular in Japan.

The gameplay couldn't be more simple. The machine only has one button. Timing and luck is everything. Eight blocks move around with different icons rotating inside. Press the button to make Mario jump and hit the block to make them stop. After they stop, the middle block continues to spin, and you want to hit it to make it match the icons on either side. If they match, you win some money; if not, you lose whatever you paid. And that's all there is to it. You can see how it plays out in the video below.

I never heard of that one.  Just last week, I learned there was an actual Dr. Mario arcade machine.

When I have gambled at casinos, it's always the penny slots.

I'll take your word for it, I'm not a gambler.
