Platform: Super NES

Released: 1992

Developer: Nintendo R&D1

Genre: Art tool

This is Mario's most ambitious spin-off game yet! This creative art-making game came bundled with the SNES mouse and mouse pad. That's right, you didn't need a controller for this game. Mario Paint turned the tables as the creativity now laid on the player.

The game's biggest feature is the stamp maker. Players can create custom stamps pixel-by-pixel. They can also make simple looping animations. Better still, the game has a music creator which uses iconic Mario items. Here you can make your own songs using those wonderful SNES sounds. You can even play your music along with the looping animation you made.

In all, the game includes 60 different textures and patterns, 75 different stamps, 15 customizable stamps, and 9 different special eraser transition effects between scenes. If you're bummed that there's no games to play, don't worry; Mario Paint also has a fly-swatting game which is very addictive and fun. You can also poke around the title screen to see cool stuff happen. It's too bad we haven't seen Mario Paint or anything like it in so long, but at least some of these iconic things show up in the fabulous Super Mario Maker

I'm waiting for the "Mario, Mushroom Farmer" game.

That would be awesome! It could be similar to Harvest Moon, except with Mario.

Even though this was basically Kid Pix, I loved this game back then.  It was really one of Nintendo's first quirky releases in the US.  I even used Mario Paint to do school projects!  Did you know that Super Mario Maker was orignally going to be another Mario Paint program?  Also, Wario Ware: D.i.Y. uses similar Mario Paint tools.

Well, now that Mario Maker is out, they can work on "Mario Paint 2." The gamepad is simply perfect for these creative kinds of games.

I never had Mario Paint, but there was a computer program in the 90s that was basically the same thing and you could make pictures or even videos.

There was a lot of stuff like that in the 90s. Good times!

The things people do with that music maker just blow my mind.

Indeed! There are a bajillion videos on YouTube of tons of music themes, and they are so insane.
