Platform: Philips-CDi

Released: 1994

Developer: Philips Fantasy Factory

Genre: Puzzle

Philips is infamous for giving the world those awful Zelda games, but they also tried their hand at a Mario game. Hotel Mario is a puzzle platformer in which Mario goes to 7 different hotels to shut all the doors (he obviously doesn't want a draft). Regular Mario enemies are scattered throughout the game and the koopalings serve as the bosses of each hotel.

Of course, there are plenty of hazards to avoid while closing doors. Enemies and elevators make each level feel a little different. Plus the hotels have different building types, such as a tree, a mine, and a cloud. All of this makes the game sound great, but the execution is very poor. The game is criticized for its unresponsive controls, the animation of the shutting doors, and the awful cutscenes that use full motion video. Take a look at the video below if you don't believe me.

Horrifying, isn't it? Especially the FMV!!! Agh!

I played Hotel Mario a long time ago and I didn't think it was AS BAD as everyone says it is.  Now, granted, that was a long time ago and I didn't play very much of it.  But it did remind me of old single screen arcade games like Mario Bros., or maybe Mappy.  I'm sure if I tried it again I wouldn't like it as much, though.

Hey, you're not done with the NES and SNES Mario spinoff games are you?  There's the puzzle game Yoshi on the NES, as well as SNES titles like Wario's Woods and Yoshi's Safari.

I'm only including games with "Mario" in the title. I wouldn't categorize Yoshi and Wario's Woods as Mario games; those are Yoshi games and Wario games respectively. Besides, I can't include everything, so I'm only doing Mario-specific games.

Honestly, it LOOKS fine. Maybe if it had the FMV clips in the video? I just see the title screen pop up bt levels.

Watch the video again. The beginning part has the intro to the story. Can't miss it. It's simply awful.

Looks like MS Paint made that. Sorry, had to scrub with sound off while in my office earlier.
