Platform: Super NES

Released: 1996

Developer: Square Soft

Genre: Turn-based RPG

It's funny to think that it took this long for Mario RPG to happen considering how many of them we have today. But Mario RPG on SNES started it all. Square Soft, the company behind the Final Fantasy games, developed this game with Nintendo's approval, and it was the last time the two companies would work together in a long time. If you've played this one, you'll agree that many of the new characters are very Final Fantasy-like.

The game is in an isometric perspective and the graphics are in that odd claymation-type style. The combat system introduced blocking, which would be later implemented in the Paper Mario series. Mario could also jump in the game, giving rise to some platforming sections, but the isometric perspective made these sections a little tricky. Along the quest, familiar faces will join Mario (Princess Toadstool and even Bowser) as well as new characters (Mallow and Geno). Mario and friends must rescue the seven stars in order to defeat the evil shape-shifting Smithy.

People tend to complain about this game, but let's remember that it was the very first Mario RPG, so it deserves some serious credit. After this game, Mario RPGs would be split into two different series: the Paper Mario series (headed up by Intelligent Systems) and the Mario & Luigi series (developed by Alpha Dream). Both series have excellent games, and most recently came together to give us Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam on 3DS.

Man, I love this game. Always makes me mad when people badmouth it. It's so good! Granted, I haven't revised it in quite some but I can't imagine it has aged as poorly as people say. I think this was the first game to actually explore the idea of the mushroom kingdom as a place people (toads) live. And I love the boss that's a rip off of the Power Rangers!

Oh, and the graphics are pre-rendered sprites, like in Donkey Kong Country. That's one of the things that people complain about most :/

Yeah, the graphics don't hold up too well, but everything else is great. I should replay this some time.

I got this on Wii Virtual Console and loved it. I didn't finish it though. I got to find some time to do that. TOO MANY GAMES!!! ARGH!

Indeed. You should probably organize your games in a list of importance. Play the ones that most interest you.

I have so many lists. I've sorted them in so many different ways too. The latest one is just games with online campaign co-op, but I was working off a list sorted by play time. I liked that one, because I was always playing something totally different. I may go back to it, but this co-op list is getting me obsessive at the moment.

I just recently wrote a blog about my top ten favorite Mario RPGs (there are only ten), and even though Super Mario RPG wasn't super high on my list, I still think the game is great and I played it to death back in the day.  It was the seed that started it all, and it was pretty significant that Square made it.

The fact that Square did it makes it special. It will never happen again, but we should be thankful it happened once!

I always thought it looked great at least.

I think so. I'm quite certain it's on the Wii VC, maybe Wii U as well.
