Platform: Super Famicom

Released: 1997

Developer: Nintendo R&D1

Genre: Racing

This game was released for the Japan-only Satellaview, which was a satellite modem peripheral for the Super Famicom released in Japan in 1995. They could've named it "Mario Bike," but in truth it's just a re-skinned version of Excitebike with Mario characters. In essence, it's a remake of Excitebike with Mario and friends, which was a great idea. Also, this means that Mario Kart Wii was not the first time we saw Mario and friends on bikes.

You can play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Wario. You'll notice that all of those characters were in Mario Kart 64. The game actually uses some of the same voice samples from that game. That's right, voices in a Super Famicom game! The concept of the game was unchanged except for a "super" mode where the player has unlimited turbo, as well as the addition of coins. The coins are spread out on the courses and increase top speed. It would be nice if Nintendo released this in some form in the West.

There was a lot of games on that Super Famicom satellite thing that I wish would've come over here, like this Mario Excitebike game.  My brother Jeff loves Excitebike.  If he were around when I was a kid, he probably would've had it on the NES.

It would be neat if Nintendo would release this on 3DS or something. It looks like a fun little game.

I played a lot of damn excite bike, I do admit.  If this had come out in the US I think it would have been a part of our collective nostalgia.
