BaD #20
Hello Pixlbit, how are you? According to Gamestop, today is Anime Day, or something. So I thought I'd list my favorite Anime. I wont list them all because it will be too long. Oh and keep in mind that it isn't a Top list or whatever.
So here is my favorite anime...
Speed Racer: Probably one of the most oldest anime series I've ever seen and the oldest one on this list. I remember watching Speed Racer back then in the 90's as a kid. It was the very first anime I've ever seen and loved it. I really loved watching Speed race and driving the Mach 5 and all the gadgets it had. The Mach 5 had gadgets for almost every situation. Basically the Japanese Batmobile. I really loved it when Speed's dad would get angry. It is definitely a classic.
Digimon: This came out around the time of Pokemon's popularity back in the 90's and it really was a direct competitor in its own way. Anyway, the first series was about a group of 7 kids who are in summer camp (don't remember well) and they get transported to the Digital World and each get their own Digimon partner. The difference here from Pokemon is that when a Pokemon evolves, that change is permanent, while when a Digimon "Digivolves" it is a temporary change that increases their strength to fight bad guys. Really loved the 1st and 2nd series as a kid.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: I remember starting middle school around the time this came out. This one is about a guy named Yugi and he and his friends are into the popular Dual Monsters card game, which is a card game with monsters and stuff on them. Yugi's grandfather is the owner of a card shop that sells the cards and one day something happens to him and it's up to Yugi and his friends must save him or something. Yugi meets up various duelers and must defeat them by playing a game of Duel Monsters, but now the monsters can come to life in hologram form in these special stadiums that they use. It's very neat and I also got hooked into the card game. Never finished it though, but it is a very good anime in my opinion.
Air Gear: This one is very cool. This one is about a guy named Ikki and he wants to be an AT Rider. AT's is the name of these motorized skates that can be modified for performance like more speed and whatnot. People with AT's are in teams and these teams race and battle each other to see which team is the best. Each team marks specific territories with a sticker of the team logo, if another team slaps a sticker above another one, that means that the teams must battle. It's a very great anime, there are some rather inappropriate moments in it like topless cleavage but it's one of those anime series that you wanna know what happens next.
Elfen Lied: This one is about this girl named Lucy who happens to be like a top secret government experiment called a Diclonius. One day she breaks free and all hell breaks lose as she starts killing everyone in the facility in a really gruesome way. You see, Lucy has these things called Vectors and they are invisible and can cut through almost anything. Someone manages to shoot a sniper round on her head and she falls into the ocean and she winds up on shore of a Japanese town. Except now she doesn't know who she is. It is a very gory anime, but also incredibly sad. It's definitely one of my favorites.
Trigun: This anime takes place in a far off planet with a space western setting. The series is about a man known as Vash the Stampede. Vash has a bounty on his head for causing the destruction of a city, the thing is that he doesn't remember. He remembers fragments of a destroyed city and fragments of his childhood. Due to the bounty on his head, you can tell plenty of outlaws want that bounty, Vash tries to take down baddies using non-lethal force, despite being an amazing gunslinger. It has sci-fi elements in it too. I definitely recommend it.
Cowboy Bebop: I remember watching this back in the day. I'm not sure how to describe it, but without spoiling anything, the anime takes place across different planets in space because Earth became uninhabitable due to an accident. The anime follows a group of bounty hunters (that in this anime, bounty hunters are known as Cowboys) as they travel on the spaceship known as Beboo. What's neat is that each of them have an interesting background. Take Spike Spiegel for example, he used to be a hitman for a criminal syndicate, but is now a Cowboy. The music in this is just amazing, it has different genres in it, and the storytelling is really good. I'm really not the best person to describe it, but this is an anime you should definitely see.
Initial D: This is one of the most recent ones I've watched. This one is about Takumi Fujiwara who happens to be a tofu delivery boy and is the son of a famous drift racer. His dad now owns a tofu shop, but Takumi drives the car his dad used to race on for deliveries. Takumi isn't a bad racer himself as he secretly practices drifting during his deliveries, or rather his dad actually taught him, which actually means his dad tells him to practice during deliveries. Like getting there faster and such. Alot of drift racers then start talking about the famous racer and mistake Takumi for him. Takumi gets challenged from other teams to drift races. It's very good, also because the car Takumi drives is an underpowered car which makes it from impossible to incredible. Music is very good too. This is an anime that once you see it, you can't wait to see what happens next. I actually remember watching some of it on Toonami in the 90's and the cgi cars seem dated, but the style gets better. The music in this is very catchy too. This is the only sports anime on the list.
Sailor Moon: Sailor Moon is about a girl named Usagi Tsukino who is very clumsy and she rescues this cat on her way to school one day. Her life changes when the cat, named Luna tells her that she is Sailor Moon and she must find the Silver Crystal and the Moon Princess before these bad guys do. Usagi eventually meets up with other girls who happen to be Sailor Guardians who are also on the same quest. Alot of you might not know, but I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan. I remember watching this on Toonami as a kid. I remember one day at school I was singing the theme in the playground by myself and this girl came up to me and she said if I watched Sailor Moon? I said yes and was surprised because I was a boy and she didn't know any boys who watched it. We became friends that day. Love the ending song as well. The 90's dub is one I wouldn't recommend watching, but give the redub or Crystal, which is a remake a try.
Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z: I'll group these together because they are part of the same series. I remember watching Z before Dragon Ball, but I'll talk about Dragon Ball before Z so it makes sense. Dragon Ball is the story of a boy named Goku who lives all by himself in the mountains. One day a girl named Bulma comes by as she is searching for the legendary Dragon Balls, as it is said that if you collect all 7, you are granted a wish. Goku happens to be in possession of one which belonged to his grandfather. They both go in search of them. It's such a fantastic anime, it's like a big adventure full of wonder and mystery and Goku discovering the world around him as he's never known the world outside his mountain home. You can tell by Goku's innocence at times like how to tell the difference between a boy and a girl. The ending song is definitely one my favorite ending themes.
Dragon Ball was an anime about adventure and discovery, Dragon Ball Z is about surpassing your limits, or something I'm not sure I don't tend to overthink on these things. DBZ is about Goku all grown-up up with a family of his own, and one day, well I really can't say much because I would spoil alot if you haven't seen it. In a non-spoiler way, Goku must become stronger to surpass his limits to take down bad guys who threaten to destroy Earth and whatnot. It's not only about him, but also about his friends and allies too. I remember watching this on Toonami. I remember every day coming from school and rushing to my room to watch it. Sometimes I would do my homework in my room while watching DBZ. It was incredible. Dragon Ball didn't air till years later at night on a Toonami time slot for more mature anime, I think it was Adult Swim. Which is why I talked about Dragon Ball first. I actually gave both of them a rewatch last year and they still hold up well.
Pokemon: If DBZ isn't THE 90's anime, then this is. Pokemon was immensely popular back then and that still isn't a good way to describe it. I remember watching it religiously back then. I remember renting a vhs tape of it and it happened to be the first 3 episodes. I remember watching it back to back that I almost got in trouble for wearing out the tape. The anime is about Ash Ketchum on his quest to become a Pokemon Master, who travels with his partner Pikachu and his friends Misty and Brock, who Ash meets along the way.
One of my friends told me they aired new episodes each Saturday morning, and can you guess what was the new episode at the time? The one were Charizard came out for the first time as luck/destiny would have it. My friend told me that they also aired Pokemon during the weekdays, but was re-runs and such but I didn't care. I guess it is safe to say that this show made my childhood awesome. The original season was amazing, the later seasons were good but really loved the original series due to nostalgia, my love of the series, and basically what defined an era for me. Plus the intro was and still is my favorite anime intro.
Those are my favorite, or some of my favorite anime series. I had to cut back as the post was too long already. Which are your favorite anime series? Thanks for reading and...
