Hello everyone, how are you? Continuing from the last time, this time I'll talk about the Playstation 3.
It was 2006 and I wasn't aware that there were new consoles out already that have supassed my Gamecube in capabilities. When I got my Gamecube, I thought games couldn't get any better than this, though I know I was just fooling myself as Nintendo had announced a new console called Revolution which went on to be the Wii and knew I would have to get one at some point and the DS was still fairly fresh. I had already known of the XBox 360 as my cousin's older brother had one, but had never seen him play it.
One thing I do remember is that my cousin's brothers bought a PS3 when it was 599 American Dollars, and here is the stupid part, one of my cousin's brothers invited his friend over one day. His brother said he was going to take and bath, and while he wasn't there, his friend stole his PS3. That's what my cousin told me. All I know is that my cousin's brothers had the habit of doing stupid things, as I've explained with Vice City. Not sure if they ever replaced it, but I hope they still had that 360.
It was 2010 and I joined 1up that year. I met some great people and I mentioned that I wanted to get into HD gaming. Not that Nintendo's games didn't satisfy me anymore, I was just curious on what I've been missing out on over the years. You know, try something different. I was told the merits of both the 360 and PS3, but in the end, everyone seemed to suggest a PS3 so I went with that. That's what I got for Xmas that year and for the first 2 months, I kinda started to regret getting it. I had started buying games that were cheap before I got a PS3, that way I would have something to play when I got one.
I had 3 games, 2 were good and 1 was terrible. I had Soul Calibur 4 and thought the visuals looked nice, I liked the character creation thing, but it wasn't something that screamed this is what you got a PS3 for. The other game was Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and I actually liked this one more than SC4. I was already familiar with Sonic, but I got to play other games I never did. The last one is something we shall not speak of.
It wasn't till I got Batman: Arkham Asylum, a game I got recommended along with others, that made me go wow. I am a huge fan of Batman TAS and this felt just like that, except this was a much mature take on it. This made the PS3 worth it for me. I enjoyed it very much. It is also the first game I got my first trophy in. I was aware games had achievements and so forth for doing stuff in games like clearing a story portion or doing something ludicrous like beating the game on the hardest difficulty without dying or not taking any damage or something. I like 'em I guess, I feel rewarded for doing something in a game.
Eventually I started buying more and more games as I saw them. 98% of the retail games I have on the PS3 I bought really cheap, I think I've only bought 2 games at full price on it since I've had it. One was a collectors edition to be honest so not sure if it counts. I got games like Red Dead Redemtion that I thought was really good, love the western setting even though it really is just GTA set in the west.
I think this might have been also around the time the big PSN outtage happened, I remember someone recommending me a game called ModNation Racers. I was told it as the closest thing the PS3 had to Mario Kart. I decided to get it, the thing is majority of the game was useless as you needed to be connected online to get the most out of it. It has a single player mode so at least I could get the hang of it till the online services were restored. It was also the first time I got to try Metal Gear Solid for the first time, which I am glad I was able to.
I got into the Uncharted games too, everyone always told me to skip 1 and go to 2. I have this sort of rule, if I can play a franchise from the start, then I will, considering the games aren't Out of Print. I thought it was pretty good. Uncharted 2 really blew me away, you can clearly see the game had a higher production behind it and you can easily see that it is 100 times better than the previous game. I got 3 on release date, well would of but the Gamestop I pre-ordered it from didn't have it in stock yet, my Gamestop never has anything. I loved 3 the first time I played it, not so much the 2nd time.
People always told me Fallout 3 was a must, I remember getting that with Borderlands, 999 on DS, and some other game I am forgetting on PS3 at the moment, it was a platformer by Ninja Theory? Not sure. Got all those games incredibly cheap on Gamestop's Game Days Sale, it is a sale were they have a ton of games on sale. I think at most I paid around 50-60 bucks for everything. I remember playing it and remember dying alot. I remember spamming melee weapons like bats and stuff to take down enemies till I got to a high enough level. I got the hang of it and really started to enjoy it as I kept playing. Exploring and finding new areas to poke around in was fun.
I eventually got NFS Hot Pursuit and that game was a blast. I never had so much fun with a NFS game since Most Wanted on the Gamecube. I like how they did the challenges and everything and how you can see if you or your friends are Most Wanted or something. Online was fun too.
One thing I really enjoyed was playing online with all the great people I met. Red Dead Redemtion was the first game I played online with friends, followed by Uncharted 2, the Uncharted 3 Beta, and then the full game. We had a ton of laughs. It was really fun and those are some great memories I'll never forget.
Overall, I'm glad I decided to take the plunge and see what games outside Nintendo were like. I will always love Nintendo and will always get their games and hardware first, but I'm glad that there exist other options too. It isn't bad and couldn't believe what I was missing. The graphics in these games were simply amazing to me, it was leaps beyond anything I had ever seen. I'm sure these games aren't or weren't anything special to people who have already played them, but to me, someone who hasn't yet (at the time) are.It only just made me excited for when Nintendo would ever make the jump to HD.
This will mark the 6th year that I've had the PS3, there's still some games that I've yet to try, I haven't since I have some games I still haven't gotten around to yet, but I'm getting there. The PS3's slogan was It Does Everything, it did, it gave me new games and experiences to try, it did many things alright in my book. So good job lads.
What are your experiences with the PS3? Hopefully better than my cousin's brothers. Thanks for reading and...
