Cleaning up my Vita: Duke Nukem 3D

We had an Apple/Macintosh growing up. Some of my first memories of gaming were on an Apple II... My point is that I did not grow up with DOOM or Duke Nukem or Quake. Marathon was the FPS that I knew and enjoyed. I also played a lot of Descent, but that is a different kind of FPS.

I recall having a demo disc for Duke Nukem growing up and playing through the first few levels quite a few times. I don't ever remember playing past the Red Light District level. So my memory of Duke Nukem previously was all strippers and the like. I was a little surprised to see the game settle into standard FPS fare after the Red Light District level. I quickly finished up Episode One: LA Meltdown and started up Episode Two: Lunar Apocalypse. I was enjoying myself and the sort-of "false nostalgia" that one might get from playing an older game for the first time...

So, I was enjoying myself through Episode Two, but then I died and for some reason when I respawned my save file was corrupted. It only loaded half the map and reloading did nothing to fix the issue. I thought I would give it a go again and select the level from the start menu. That was fine, but starting off with just the pistol really killed my desire to play anymore. I am setting the game aside for the moment. Since there are another 4 or 5 more episodes that I could mess around with, I am debating whether I want to play more or just delete it.

I ended up jumping back into Crimsonland. I am surprised at how long that game has kept hold of me. XCOM just came out on Vita yesterday and that is a game that I have always wanted to play... should really play through Tactics Ogre and FF Tactics before I buy another tactical games. Decisions, Decisions.

Mentioning those Duke Nukem levels brings back a ton of memories. I played that on the PC and then every port to console that came out: Playstation, N64, and Saturn. The Saturn version was the most faithful to the PC version with all the uncensored cutscenes.

I missed the boat on Marathon because I didn't have a Mac at that time. I had a Mac Plus a little earlier and played Dark Castle, Wizardry and Shadowgate on it.

In the end, Descent is the game that I have the most memories of on the computer.  I could probably play through the first dozen levels blindfolded at this point...  not really blindfolded, but the point should be clear.

I remember a lot of talk about that game back then. I think I tried it once on Playstation but didn't very far in it.

My first gaming 'console' was an Apple ][+.

Right now I'm playing Gravity Rush on my Vita.  I sitll liked Tearaway better.

I still haven't played Gravity Rush, and am in no hurry to get around to it.

I always wished I had a mac as a kid. One time I stayed over at a friend's when my parents went out on business for a few days and I played his dad's mac.  I recall those days like they were yesterday. Played some gangster adventure game.

There are a handful of computer games from that era that I remember loving, but cannot tell you what the games actually were.

I think that is the model of computer my old elementary school had where we played Oregon Trail while "learning" how to use the computer. I think the only way I played Doom was through the old shareware discs. Man those were fun times.

I really wish they would port DOOM over to the Vita.  They made it work on the GBA, the Vita should be easy.

Doom would be perfect on the Vita, and something I would play.

Man, having technical issues like that kill a game for you is the worst. I've never played Duke Nukem at all but I've got it in my PS+ backlog lol. I remember having a demo for one of the Marathon games as a kid and playing it a bunch.
