First Impressions [Axiom Verge @PSVITA]

I feel bad for skipping out on Axiom Verge when it released on PC. The reason being, there are many so-called 2D Metroid-like successors out there and they do not always feel exactly like Metroid. The haunted space is a big factor for me. A lot of those games dont live up to Metroid, while others do a good job of finding their own quirk or identity, like Momodora for instance or maybe Guacamelee and Ori and the Blind Forest. Anyhow, I have SuperMetroid on WiiU which is wonderful to replay, as well as the GameBoy Advance games, so I don't really need more metroid if it won't live up to the old games. There are also classic Castlevania games and DS games to replay to get the Metroidvania fix.

Axiom Verge is basically a carbon-copy of original NES Metroid complete with soundtrack. You can argue with me on which Metroid it emulates the most, but I've only beaten the first 2-3 bosses and so far and it is very slow paced and a bit vague on direction, kind of like the original NES game. The soundtrack and artwork is superb and you can map out guns on the vita screen for quick swapping. It's a pretty nice game even on the smaller PSVITA screen. I also find it to be quite challenging just 2-3 bosses in and 2-3 areas discovered. Yeah. It actually does a good job of being a true 2D metroid, unlike other 2D games. It makes me want a new 2D Metroid from Nintendo, but they are putting out another shooter called Federation or whatever.

I've heard good things about this.

I might have to buy this. ONe of my favorite reviewers, Indie Gamer Chick, loved it when it was on PC.  Vita sounds like a good place for it though.

If you like Metroid 1 for all it is then get it. If you can't go back to Metroid1 because it seems outdated in anyway, then don't bother. It will be annoying.

I am having a blast so far.  there are some technical issues that I have noticed, but they haven't had a negative affect on my experience so far.

How far are you? I'm fiding the game hard already after 3rd boss. Maybe I just suck, but I'm dying a lot.

I am dying a lot as well, but since dying doesn't feel as though it has a lot of consequences, I am playing the game a little more dangerously than I normally would.

I feel as though I am pretty far.  I have probably beat 5 or 6 bosses...  I don't really know.

There are also plenty of conveniently placed save points to make it easier.

I might pick this back up on Vita. I was playing it on PS4, but eventually lost interest. I usually love these kinds of games, but it got to the point where I was running back and forth the entire world a lot looking for a needle in a haystack, which just got... boring, quite frankly.

Does anyone know if this one has cross-save? If I can pick up where I left off I might start up again on Vita. Seems like something that I'd play in bed.

One of the reasons why I liked the Metroid Remake zero mission better than the original-- they made the game more accessible. Some of the artwork is a bit overwhelming here too, like they don't give me a sense of location like Metroid does. It is a Metroid 1 throwback for better or worse. I honestly prefer to play this  in bed on PSVita than sitting in front of a TV because if the slow pace and backtracking. It's pretty cool though. I got the headphones on and the volume high!Cool

Totally - Zero Mission is an awesome game and completely blows the original away. Axiom Verge isn't bad, it's just not quite up to par with Metroid. It does have a few low points and after dealing with a few of them, it was enough that I walked away and haven't looked back.

Did some quick research and it doesn't support Cross Save at this time. So I might restart the game at some point here since I'm in between games on handhelds at the moment.

If it ever comes out on PS3 or Wii U, I might get it.  I'd rather play it on the big screen and those are the only consoles I have up and running right now that aren't portable.

I think the WiiU gamepad is perfect for SNES type games. PSVita is great, but I think a slightly bigger screen would be perfect for this. I'll buy it again on WiiU if it ever comes out.

I believe it is destined for the Wii U, which seems fitting considering it's basically a Metroid game and Dan Adelman has been doing the PR for it (he was a big indie promoter within Nintendo for a long time).
