1UP Refugee Here + My Thoughts On Bioshock Infinite

Hey, all.

I finally came over from 1UP (I was Mugwump Johannsen aka gigantor84). I have another blog on Wordpress, but without the old crew around it feels pretty empty. So here I am.

At any rate...Bioshock Infinite.

The game looks great, I love the combat, and I really liked having Elizabeth around. It was fun seeing her interact with Booker and she was really useful in combat. However, the story wasn't nearly as good as Bioshock 1's, and I didn't like the twist at the end with Comstock's identity or the quantum physics sorcery in general. (The reveal of Elizabeth's identity, though...goddamn.)

Overall, the whole thing felt too content to stay in the original's shadow to be any more than just good. I enjoyed it well enough, sure, but it was hardly the relevelation that it's being praised as in the gaming press IMO.

Haven't played it yet. Funds are tight at the mo, that's on my wish list along with Tomb Raider for when the regular paychecks start coming in again.

Didn't get too far in. I have a hard time with first person view, plus, it was creeping the heck out of me! I'll get back to it at some point, though.

Oh, yeah, it was a super creepy, claustrophobic game. Those ballerinas... *shudders*

Honestly, though? That's the biggest part I miss about the first game compared to Infinite. I miss the sense of paranoia that constantly followed you, and it's just not there in such a bright, wide open setting as Columbia. Most of the time, anyway.

The first thing I noticed when I started up Bioshock was the creepy stuff you could see on that elevator ride down - there was a big daddy fighting with a shark that made me do a double take.

I loved all those WTF moments in the game so much. It was such a twisted, out-there experience.

You should definitely check it out. You don't need to play the first one to get through this--although I'd recommend both for sure.

I beat Bioshock 1 & 2. Great games but I felt as if they were a little on the short side. I'm sure people got more of their money's worth by playing again as "evil" but I saw no point in it.

I kinda felt like you do with Infinite. Aka, I didn't fully comprehend all the praise critics were heaping upon Bioshock. Yes, it was a beautiful fps with super powers and a story that made me care about the plight of the little sisters. However, there were other games that made me even more emotionally invested. (Nier & Deadly Premonition for example)

I thought the first game deserved all the praise it got. The constant sense of dread and tension, and the way I could lose myself in Rapture and it's story, are things that very, very few games this gen could match.

I didn't get nearly as much out of Infinite, though. Although the game was good on it's own merits, it's been a bit of a headscratcher seeing how so many critics have put it on this golden pedestal when it didn't come close to matching the first game.

Welcome to Pixlbit! I actually liked the second Bioshock a lot more than the first one. I know I'm in the minority, but I thought the combat was better. Plus you could play as a Big Daddy! Which was pretty badass. I'm looking forward to playing Infinite when it comes down in price.
