Thief

I read about a new Thief game that is coming out for the next gen consoles the other day. It got me to thinking about how much I like the whole stealth method of stealing stuff in games. While stealth is featured in many games,it is only used by thieves in a handful of them. So this intrigued me,as I really enjoyed the Thief game that was on the original XBOX.

I can only think of a few. You may know of more, and I hope you will share about them. I had a Lupin III game for PS2 that was pretty interesting. It was based on the manga/anime series if you are unfamiliar with it. There was a game called Stolen that had a lot of the elements I like.

But of course the most popular thief of all is Sly Cooper. What he can teach us from the pages of the Thievious Raccoonus can be found nowhere else! No other game I've played had such a grasp on burglary. Games like the Sly Cooper series allow us to do things we would be locked up for quickly. But I suppose that's one of the reasons we play games. To experience things we normally could not do. I guess I'm not alone in my love of larceny in my games. GTA is one example of how much fun crime can be.

One of my favorite crime films of all time is Thief. I only wish there was a game that had things happen like in that one. The main character,Frank[played by James Caan],is a master thief who has done time before.. He knows how to crack safes and deal with high tech electronic security. There is an art to what he does. He employs modern techniques as well as old school tricks. I love stuff like that. I liked the Oceans Eleven movies for the same reason. Maybe someday they will do a game that has all these elements in it. Think it would be a blast to play something like that.

What I'm listening to today.....nerd rock!

hey I've seen that James Caan movie.  One of my favorite movies of all time is James Caan's "Rollerball".  That movie is wack.

I was a big fan of the old Thiefs too.  I haven't played Dishonored, but I'm excited a new Thief is coming.  They were really neat back in the day.

This one could be fantastic. They have put in a ton of work on it. Next gen goodness is coming soon!

Do you think the first Thief would have aged well? Its currenty $9.99 on Steam and has me tempted...

I think it is a very unique kind of game. Every review I've ever read about it was positive. So 10 bucks is a pretty good deal on that.

Dishonored paid quite a lot of homage to the original Thief games (not the one on the Xbox, the ones on PC developed by Looking Glass.) Mind you, we're talking about late 90's era PC graphics here. If I recall, the big deal about Thief II was that it featured, get this, colored light sources. Needless to say, if dated 3d graphics get to you (and they don't age nearly as well as character based / sprite graphics, so I understand,) You probably won't enjoy it very much.

Honestly, 10 bucks is a great deal for those games. If you're worried, look at some lets play videos on YouTube. Just make sure you avoid stuff like speed runs or anybody 'gaming' the game. Thief is a title that needs to be played slowly and with purpose, so watching anybody doing weird stuff like that won't help you.

I remember seeing the first Thief game at E3 years and years ago.  It wasn't my cup of tea, but it seemed pretty revolutionary anyway.

My favorite thief game is Lock N Chase. :)

I remember Thief, but never got a chance to play it. Never seen that Caan movie, but cool poster. As far as thieving movies go, I've been meaning to see Robot and Frank for a while now. Love Sly Cooper.

Love Weezer too, and the Devo was great. Someone should tell that guy he needs pants. Wait, he has shorts on? Huh. Well... tell him to whip it good. lol

Devo are the fathers of nerd rock. Gotta love those guys. Fine musicians too. I'm gonna look up Robot and Frank. Never heard of it,but if it's about thieves I might like it.

It's about an old man that uses a robot to help him steal jewels as far as I know. I actually just got back from red box and rented The Sessions, which is about a dying, paralyzed man wanting to have sex before he goes. From that description, my mom was horrified, but I showed her the trailer, and she thought it looked cute, so we'll watch it tonight. lol

I think I'd consider Buddy Holly the father of nerd rock. Or maybe he's the great granddad? lol Devo are great, though.

Been wanting to see that movie. Heard such great things about the actors in it. Helen Hunt  is amazing from what I hear.  Buddy Holly! You're right.....big time nerd and music legend.

Always wanted to play the Thief games, but never did. Never could get into Sly Cooper, though. And that movie is streaming on Netflix at the moment. As far as caper movies go, my favorite is The Great Train Robbery with Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

Oh,that is a great film. Another one with Michael Caine I really like is The Italian Job. The original was the best.

"You're not supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" LOL I have to say though, while I enjoyed that one when my dad rented it, I felt it was more like a Bond film almost; the remake was one of my favorite movies growing up. I won't argue that it's better, but I liked it.

The part with all those mini Coopers was wild. And the bus teetering on a cliff!

Theif was one of the best games I ever played and for a physicle copy quite expensive to, so a new theif would be awesome, they have been trying to release a new theif for like five years so maybe they will finally do it.

Eidos has pulled out all the stops to perfect it. Maybe they are trying to make up for messing up Tomb Raider? Thief for XBOX is a game I traded years ago. Vintage Stock usually has a few copies,so I better get it while I can.

I recently picked up all 3 titles on the PC in one collection for a pretty decent price off amazon, and yes, it was physical. It took a little work to get the older titles to run, but Thief 3 worked great. That's probably your best bet.
