Total Eclipse of the Heart

I've been seeing quite a few blogs and web site stories and previews on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5.

However,  I am on a Total Blackout of anything MGS5 related.

I won't read any blog, preview, thoughts, interviews, or anyones theorys on MGS5. So just a heads up, I wont even comment on anything related to MGS5

Why? I am so glad you ask.

As most of you know Metal Gear Solid is dear to my Heart.  And as I anticipated the release of MGS2, I read everything and watched anything and everything related to MGS2. So it was no secret when I had to play as Raiden. I think I read so many bad reviews and comments on having to play as  Raiden that before I even played as Raiden,

I already made up my mine I would not  like it!

So there it went, when I first played MGS2 I reviewed it and gave it a 7 out of 10.  Why, well, because of Raiden.  And now after having played it agian just this week, I love that game. Raiden was fun to play. I loved his codec conversation and his innocence of battle and how naive he was.

*screen shot courtesy of GH*

I let myself be preconditioned to not like a game or character based on what I read before hand and it ruined my first expeirence of the game, Maybe had I acutally not read anything, by the time I was finished playing as Raiden while waiting to play as Snake again, I might have enjoyed it more.  Who knows?

Snake Eater.

By the time Snake Eater was in progress, I owned an xbox. I figured I would never play it so I put it on the back burner. I dont remember reading anything about it until Subsistience was released with a better camera angle. So that didnt really spoil anything. I sold my xbox and I bought a PS2 and  MGS3 Subsistience. And it was a wonderful experience. I knew absolutley nothing about that game, plot, settings, Boss battles...nothing.. It was all new and fresh! Wonderful!!

MGS4

I wanted to recreate the same feeling and experience I had playing MGS3 with MGS4. So I did a total blackout. I did not read anything related to MGS4....except...yeah, except for a teenie tiny article in EGM magazine which included a major.....Huge Spoiler!  The guy writing the article  pretty much thought it was a known fact, well, it might have been for people who read everything but I didn't...that totally blew a major character suprise for me.

The second, which is harder to control, my nephew played the game before me and told me about Snake's return to...?????????.   I had know idea about that and that pretty much ruined the game for me.  I did enjoy MGS4 even knowing the aforehand unmentioned spoilers. But it could have been oh such more wonderful and heartfelt had I not known those two major spoilers.

So Please do not take offense if you post a blog or comment on or about MGS5 and I dont read or respond....because I dont even plan on buying a PS4 but when if I do it will probably be when and if MGS5 is released.

If.....I'm still around. You know how many times games can get delayed.....forever!

And if that's what it takes, that is how long this blackout will last.....Forever....and a day.

Well then with all that maybe you need to do like me and get Tiger Woods 2014 and kick back and enjoy some good golf but in all honesty this is the best Tiger game I have played in five years.

Love this blog! That's why I've stopped reading reviews until after I've experienced things for myself. There are exceptions, for example I watch a lot of stuff tearing Sonic 06 apart, but a) I'll likely never play it and b) there's no spoilers I'd care about. But I noticed a while ago, if I read enough about something, I form a confirmation bias towards whatever I've read and take on the writers' opinions as my own before experiencing it. I hate that; thought my mind was more resitsant to "the Force," but I guess not. Also, I don't trust people under the age of thirty-five that tell me Citizen Kane is their favorite movie, which is in the same vein as what I'm saying, but deserving of a whole other rant. lol

Anyway, I have yet to play 3 to 5, but I really want to play all of them in order if I ever get the chance; know of any deals on PS1s, PS2s, PS3s, and all four of the released games? lol

Well, you need to have a PS3 to play #4, so the HD collection is for you. Either the PSN edition or the original PSX disc will work on the system for MGS 1. Boom, all the main games at your disposal. heh

Joe:  Most games, spoilers wouldnt bother me, but the MGS world is so full of complex stories and twists that it should be expierenced fresh and new, plus I hate that I didnt enjoy MGS2 the first play through and it was just because of all I read.

CoolSelzter pretty much answers your MGS questions in his comment

MGS5 will be on PS360. As far as I've heard anyway. I'm with you on the blackout thing. I've played every MGS game and of course there'se no doubt I will play the new one. I'm avoiding anything related to it and just want to be surprised. I will play through all the games before the new release and make up my own mind whether it's good or bad. I'm actually avoiding Bioshock Infinite at the moment because there's so much hype around it. Good god. I will wait a while for the hype to go away and decide later. Let's do this!Cool

asrealasitgits: we have to be extra vigilant to ward off the spoiler trolls!  I'm playing through all my MGS games this year, I have three down and 5 to go!

I try not to give away spoilers but because I talk about games so much I'm sure it happens! Luckily for you, I'm more knowledgable when it comes to Resident Evil, James. lol.

Ben:  I kinda figured you wouldnt spoil it for me unless you hear some wild out of the left field crazy rumor that you just can not contain yourself.....but I'll keep my eye on you mister!

I get that GH, I faced a similar problem when I picked Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, I was looking for problems before I even started playing it. Conversley I read terrible reviews for Aliens Colonial Marines and actually found myself enjoying it, much more than the reviews stated so I guess it's a real double edged sword!

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 04:44 PM

Chunopo: Aliens Colonial Marines...exactly what I am talking about, I read all those bad reviews and internet web reivews....if that was my type of game i wouldnt have even given it a chance....and thats a shame.  Because its got to be good for someone!

Genius!!!

Every MG game I've played has been spoiled years before I touch it (I knew strategies for beating Snake Eater's last boss before I finished the intro).

I still love the series, and will probably buy this game twice, but it'd be nice to have a blind experience. I'm both amped & infuriated by what I saw for MGS5 so far...and I won't say anything else.

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 04:46 PM

Atlus:  With a series as popular as MGS I'm bound to see a few spoilers, but hopefully I can keep it too a minimum.  and thanks for not spoiling anything here!  ahahahahah

That's a pretty good way to approach it I think. I hate getting spoilers in magazine articles and podcasts. I try to never put them in blogs. That's why mine are sort of generalized about gameplay and the asthetics of games. Story is too important to ruin for folks. As for crappy reviews by crappy people? I slough them off like they were never written. I'm even going to give that Walking Dead game[survival instinct] a go despite horrid reviews. Merlin Durl...in a game.....what could be better?  I really don't know, except MGSV!!!

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 07:31 PM

Wayde:  I used to not think much of spoilers until I started playing sequels...then it really became important to not know anything about the game......I never watch a review of a game I am going to buy....If I can play the demo...I can usually judge for myself.

I have to say I took your advice, and I skipped a portion of your blog because I haven't played those games. I was on the fence about MGS2. Some parts I really liked, some I didn't but the game overall was fun. I know I should catch up and play the others but I don't think I would appreciate it as much because I'd just try to blow through the games. I'm waiting for a point where I know they'll be the only game I'm set on playing.

GrayHaired

Chris:  After just replaying MGS2 and watching all the cutscenes and listening to all the codecs I appreciate it much more..  Yes, wait until you can enjoy and savor the MGS games at your leisure.  And also, you did the smart thing, I try not to have Spoilers but sometimes even I can't help it.

I watched some gameplay previews of Revengence, but I've never played a Metal Gear Solid game. Wow, do I feel out of the loop ha.

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 07:36 PM

Ms Britt...What!   you've never played  a Metal Gear Game!  I am speechless...hahahahah.  Im just kidding. the series isnt for everone. But I say give it a try and you might just suprise yourself and like them.

Spoilers drive me crazy. That somewhat happened to me with Halo 3 and even with the second to last episode of The Walking Dead on the WIi U's community on the stupid The Walking Dead: instinct. I went there just to see what kind of people would be there and many people write the spoiler. There is an option to add if what you say is a spoiler but nope, nobody that to do so. That upset me.

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 07:39 PM

Monty:  It doesnt take but a second to add the words  Spoilers Ahead. that is what pissed me off about the EGM article. But in that case I feel like the author assumed everyone already knew the spoiler...but he was wrong and it really ruined it for me. So I am blacking it all out.  hahahaha

Spoilers don't bother me as much, but I can see where they might be important to a fan of MGS games, which rely a lot on mystery and suspense. That said, I'm glad I got to experience the death of Aerith firsthand with no advance warning when I first got FFVII.

GrayHaired

04/02/2013 at 11:13 PM

Andrew:  Yeah, even me not being a fan of RPGS saw that report on the death of Aerith and i thought, that seemed like a major spoiler!

Good luck!  Avoiding spoilers and conversations on a game of this magnitude is going to be tough, so stay away from sites like GameFAQs that have user discussions right on the front page.  That said, if you are worried about the game being spoiled, I guess you're still hoping to play it?  I know you had concerns over finishing up all the PS3 games you wanted to play first, but if the opportunity to play MGSV presents itself, will you'll take it?

By the way, I'm sorry I haven't been around all that much to comment.  The past few weeks have left me with little time to spend on Pixlbit, although I have been reading quite a bit.

Temperance:   I know, it's gonna be tough to not see or read spoilers...but I can minimize(sp) it as much as possible.  I know, I'll break down and buy a PS4....I just know I will.
