Top 5

So, I am just going to steal this idea...  and then break all the rules.  I have been thinking about my Top 5 games of all time for the past 2 weeks at this point.  I have come to the realization that selecting 5 games is just too darn difficult.

Why is 5 such a difficult number in my mind?  I know my Top 3 games, and they haven't changed in years.  It's spots 4 and 5 that make the task of selecting my top 5 favorite games of all time so difficult.  Here are my Top 3 then, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Ratchet and Clank:  Going Commando.

I have come up with 7 options of games that could potentially fill out the rest of my Top 5, and they fall in no particular order after my Top 3.  So, this is where I break the rules and list off the rest of my Top 10 games of all time.  FF IV, Chrono Trigger, Bioshock, The Witcher 2, Wolfenstein:  The New Order, Halo:  Reach and Metroid Fusion.

After listening to the latest episode of NWP I couldn't help but wonder what games just missed the Top 5.  What are the games that fill out the Top 10 list, those could be even more interesting than the Top 5.  Which is why I decided to break the rules and fill out the rest of a Top 10.

I wanted to break the rules one last time and go over the games that would fill out my Top 20 list.  These games should help inform what I would consider to be my favorite series and genres...  In no particular order, Mass Effect, Bioshock 2, Symphony of the NIght, Metroid Prime 2:  Echoes, Metal Gear Solid, Shovel Knight, God of War, Half-Life 2 and...  I might be cheating with this one...  Super Mario All-Stars.

So, there is that.  What would your 6-10 be?

Yeah, it's always difficult to create a list and rank them.  I mean, Street Fighter II was one of my favorite games ever, but its sequels are technically better games.  My most memorable games are Castlevanias I, III, IV, and SOTN (they're all so different but I loved them all), Tekken (series), Street Fighter II and Alpha series, Soul Calibur 1 and 2, Portal (series), Final Fantasy VII-X, Lunar, Resident Evil 1, 2, Code Veronica, REmake, Super Mario World, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid.  I obviously grew up playing a lot of fighters.  I really liked Bioshock Infinite, but I quit playing the first one near the beginning of the game, but I liked it enough to give Infinite a shot.  Some day I'll go back (maybe when the collection releases on PS4, even though I still own the 360 version).

I really don't think it matters if sequels are technically better.  That is the joy of coming up with a list of your FAVORITE games of all time, not the BEST games.

Thinking back, I can't believe how much time I had spent with Soul Caliber 2.

I haven't played Wild Hunt yet.  I started it when it first released, but never played more than an hour. From what I understand of Wild Hunt, I would venture a guess that I would prefer 2 to 3.

I cant break games down that closely since I've been playing games for a long time and play a lot of them on many different platforms. A lot of games I enjoy are part of series where they more or less play the same. I can't imagine a personal list that would not involve a resident evil game, a silent hill game, castlevania game or a souls game.

1. Demon's Souls
2. Resident Evil Remake
3. Silent Hill 2
4. Castlevania SotN
5. Majoras Mask
6. Final Fantasy 8
7. Mega Man 2
8. Metroid Prime
9. Super Metroid
10. Link's Awakening

In reality, every game I listed, outside of A Link to the Past, I love equally.  It is really tough to get down and actually rank them.  When it comes to series, I typically love all the games in specific series equally.  I love Metroid Fusion just as much as Prime, Other M and Super Metroid.  Same goes with the 3 Bioshock games.

I don't have a top 6-10 list, but I do have a definitive top 5:

1. Pac-Man (Arcade)

2. Animal Crossing (GameCube)

3. Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)

4. Super Mario Kart (SNES)

5. Namco Museums vol. 1 to 5 (PSOne)

Do you like that new Super Pacman DX or whatever it's called? Championship Pacman?

Pac-Man Championship Edition is one of the reasons why I got an Xbox 360.  It's one of my favorite Pac-Man games.  Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 might make me get a PS4 someday.

Does KOTOR2 have better story/gameplay than 1? Do you need to play 1 to enjoy 2? Its a pretty high praise. I've mostly ignored that game for some reason and I love SW.

If you get it with the Restoration Mod, then yes to both. If not, no. They go for very different things though. 1 is a fun Episodes 4-6 style adventure while 2 gets a lot darker and more philosophical. Definitely play 1 first.

Sonic 2 is the only one that really surprises me off this list.  I haven't played it in years, but I do remember loving that game.

Impossible. So many great games. Also, how to compare old school to new school. I can't put them all in one list. They'd have to seperated by generation or something. Like putting original Doom on the same list with Wolfenstein: New Order would be kind of rediculous.

It isn't about comparing.  It's about stating what your favorite games are, regardless of when they released.  If you love The New Order just as much as you love DOOM, why wouldnt you put them on the same list?

I start picking favorite games and the list gets so long, I don't know how to organize it. I'd rather do a kind of cluster of game choices rather than a linear 1, 2, 3 list. I wonder why there's got to be this competition for best game ever. I don't think like that.

I really can't say which games are my favorite because its constantly changing but if I needed to have 10 games with me on an island I would have to go with

1. Super Mario Bros - NES

2. NCAA Football 14 - PS3

3. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - PS2

4. NBA 2K16 - Steam

5. Tecmo Super Bowl - NES

6-10 would constantly be changing but the Top 5 is solid for me. I guess I would stick games in like Rise of the Kansai, God Of War, Onimusha, mostly stuff from the PS2 era.

A lot more sports games than I normally expect from these types of lists.  Nothing wrong with that though, I really miss the NES era sports games.
