Finally Playing Wii Games!

As you know, I recently purchased a new computer, which is decently powerful and runs games well enough for my liking. Since I got a decent CPU this time, an Intel one, and not a shitty AMD one that can’t do shit, I decided to give the Dolphin Emulator a go, and boy am I glad I did.

For the longest time, my problem with Wii games has been the controls. Whenever I play a Wii game for longer than an hour my wrists cramp up like I’m 13 again. This was especially the case with the Metroid Prime trilogy, which I was really getting into but couldn’t continue without absolute agony.

So, now I’m playing it on my PC with a controller, and it’s fucking marvelous. It took a little bit of fiddling to find a perfect layout, but now I’ve settled for:

IR sensor as Right analogue stick (it’s great, because the automatically snaps back to the screen’s center when you’re not using it)

C stick as left stick

A as Right trigger for shootin,

B as X for jumping

 - as L1 and + as R1 so I can switch visors on the fly

C as Square

Z as L2 for locking on

It works like a basic first person shooter and it feels great!

Dolphin is also extremely well optimized. My CPU is the weakest part of my machine at the moment, and Emulators basically run off CPU’s. I was a bit worried about this, but every game I’ve tried hits 60 fps and stays there, and at 1080p too, which means all games look infinitely better too! If you have an i5 processor or better, you can run Dolphin really well too!

After experimenting with Metroid Prime, I tried the other Wii game I had but never tried due to never wanting to touch the unholy abomination that is the Wii-mote again: Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is hands down one of the best games I’ve ever fucking played!  Naturally I had to have a separate controller profile for this one that made sense, and I mapped shaking the Wii-mote to R2 which makes the game infinitely better.

God, this game looks amazing at 1080p too. I always thought Wii games looked intrinsically crappy, but you clean up the image a bit and the art direction really sings. It’s such a great game and I’m fucking loving it. So far my favourite level is the one with the puzzle plank galaxy, and I’m not entirely sure if it’s because of the level being excellent or the fact that I still can’t get that level’s music out of my head!

It’s a game that seems to be constantly looking for ways to make me smile or surprise me. It’s simply one of the best games I’ve played and seriously makes the Wii-U’s Mario efforts look like fucking Amateur bullshit in comparison.

So, now I’m finally enjoying the Wii, what games do you recommend playing?

Yeah, Mario Galaxy is a work of genius on all fronts. I had so much fun playing that game when I got my Wii.  So much joy.

It's happiness incarnate.

It's funny because I actually preferred using motion controls for shooters on wii. I preferred them for games like Resident Evil 4, RE Chronicles games and the Metroid Trilogy. I didn't particularly care for it in every game like the last Zelda, but mostly because it required motion control melee which I never really cared for. I just rest my hand on a pillow and play FPS quite nicely on wii. I thought aiming in RE4 was much more acurate. I don't know. Maybe the novelty wore off, but I thought it was a refreshing idea at the time. I also liked Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

I like the idea of it, since it essentially gives you the accuracy of a mouse, but even resting my hand on a pillow makes my arm cramp up. That may just be a result of past injuries, since two of my previous jobs were rather wrist and arm intensive (painting and chicken farming). Either way I just prefer using a controller or a mouse and keyboard (though even that can give me trouble from time to time).

I was pretty pissed off when the Metroid trilogy came to WiiU and didn't offer gamepad support. Such great games and originally the first two were Gamecube games, so what the fuck? I would love the chance to experience Corruption in HD. Also, the RE shooters were ported to PS3 or PS4 I believe. I've just never really had cramping issues with wii except for maybe the last zelda game because it was fucking long and even the overworld was like a dungeon. There were also a lot of repetative mini games. Windwaker is much better on WiiU. I have cramping issues with Diablo 3 and action MMOs on PC and Souls games on console.

For MMO's, I bought a mouse with number keys on the side. You have no idea how helpful that is and I will never ever go back to the old way of doing things.

What gives you cramps with Dark Souls?

If your pc can run MMOs and stuff it might run Dolphin? I'd give it a shot, then you can play it in HD. And you can use your wii-mote with the emulator if you want, or set it up with mouse and keyboard.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the best looking Wii games period.  And the Puzzle Plank Galaxy is my favorie, too!

I'm trying to think of good Wii games for you, but most of the ones I'm thinking of work better with a Wii remote than a controller, so I don't know if they'd work well on PC (i.e., Zack & Wiki).

I really liked the Wii, but my favorite console of last generation was the 360.  And considering how much of a Nintendo fan I am, that's saying a lot.

Depending on what the Wiimote does I can either map it to the right analogue stick or to the mouse. I'm thinking of maybe giving DKC:R a go, or one fo the Kirby games. I heard there's a Wii Klonoa game, and I do love me Klonoa. Hopefully it's good.

Huh. PS3 was my favourite due to games like Demon's Souls, Uncharted, Infamous, and the like. 360 didn't have as many exclusives that I liked tbh.

And yeah, Puzzle Plank is just so gosh darn charming!

Klonoa on Wii is very good, but it's just a remake of the first game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is probably the best 3D Mario game that Nintendo's made. Didn't much care for the original Galaxy, but 2 just expanded on all of the ideas and did them so much better. Plus it gets damn tough at the end if you go for all the stars.

I need to check out Dolphin. It's one of those things I've just never bothered with because I didn't have a gaming rig, but since I do now, it's probably time I go for it.

Also I saw you mention Klonoa in the comments above - the Wii game is totally awesome. It's a remake of the original and they did a phenomenal job. One of my favorite games on the system.

If you need some Wii games to check out, I suggest the ones mentioned in our Unsung Wii Games feature.

Thanks for linking that article, I'll definitely be using that in the future!

Do it. You don't even need a good GPU, just a modern CPU and you should be golden. It's worth it just for 1080p and the chance to use other controllers if you wish - plus it plays gamecube games and it really well optimized.

That's awesome. The original Klonoa games were my childhood.

Thanks from me too about the article link. That went up just before I joined here.

Glad you're enjoying Mario and Metroid, both those games are fantastic, especially Mario. As for Wii recommendations, Xenoblade is a fun RPG, Sin and Punishment Star Successor might be the best rails shooter out there (but use a mouse for it- trust me on that one), both Kirby games are perfect whenyou want something lighthearted, especially if you want something to play with Bilby.

Also the original Ace Attorney games are on WiiWare and are fantastic.

Ok, I could never play SMGs on Dolphin because of the Wiimote requirement. At least I thought so. Going to have to try it now with your suggestion. Have been in the mood for some Nintendo fun recently. I did get Monster Hunter Tri to work on Dolphin, and it kicked ass. My first MH game.

There are a ton of controller profiles for SMG on the net, so you should find one to suit you. Dolphin is great in that you can map things like shaking, tilting, or thrusting the wiimote to a button.

The only thing you need a wiimote for are games that need wiimote plus, like Skyward Sword and the like.

I always felt slightly uncomfortable with the controls for Metroid Prime. Being able to remap them seems essential.

It's amazing to think that the controls are so off putting for Wii games. I mean you have a 2D side scroller in Wario Land Shake It that would be perfect if you didn't have that one instance of motion controls. Another one that comes to mind is MadWorld...great game, but you get a sore wrist after awhile.

I dig the Dolphin emulator, but I had no idea that it plays Wii games. Looks like its time for me to do some vid watching on YouTube about getting Wii games to play on it.
