The NES Completionist finds a new home

Many of you here may know that 1UP.com is in the process of winding down - a site that's been something of a home for me for the past three-and-a-half years. When I first started blogging there in August 2009, I owned a mere 71 NES games and had set forth to blog about each and every one of them; today, 140+ games and 90+ reviews later, my NES collection is now at over 500 titles, and I've expanded that journey to the entire NES library - or, more specifically, non-pirate and non-homebrew titles released in the United States during the system's lifespan, from the launch in October 1985 to the release of Sunday Funday in 1995/1996. That's around 750 or so titles, and I might die before reaching the goal! But hey, it never hurts to try.

My original blog is below, and for the time being, it's the best place to go for old reviews. In the coming weeks, though, I'll be backing up my site and putting these blogs in some sort of archived format for download - probably in PDF form - and picking up with review #97 (Mike Tyson's Punch-Out) as soon as I get it written.

Glad to see you're contributing on Pixlbit now. As always, I'll keep my eyes open for your new reviews.

That said, it's crazy to think just how many games you bought over those few years. And you still have a ways to go before you're done, thanks to all those rare and expensive games lurking about! Still, I wish you the best of luck towards acquiring the rest. By the way, do you have DuckTales 2? I had no idea that game was so expensive.

I have the Game Boy version, which is much cheaper, but not the NES one. I've gotten to the point where I can't find new stuff in stores these days, and have picked up one cartridge online that falls above the $50 mark. This trend, I'm sure, will continue slowly but surely over time, but for now I've got more than enough backlog to keep me occupied.

The way some of these games are priced is frustrating. It's fine if you have to do it once or twice (I've paid over $50 for used games online, too). But, when you look at the rest of the games you need to acquire it's exasperating, especially if you have to turn to the auction sites where nothing is certain. It involves so much time (and money) that is better spent actually playing the games. Did you ever put together a price estimation for the games you have left to collect?

I haven't, but I'm somewhat afraid to do so. I can say right now that I *won't* be buying any of the Panesian titles, Stadium Events, or Myriad 6-in-1, and will probably do some of the harder-to-find stuff via emulation. I'm sure the remaining stuff is probably a few thousand dollars, but I might get sidetracked by real life and throw in the towel before I hit full completion of the entire library. Hence the reason I'm letting the purchases slow down for the time being, in hopes that I'll eventually have a few lucky finds like that $3 copy of Amazing Tater.

I wish I could find Amazing Tater for $3! As much as I liked Kwirk, it wasn't until a few months ago that I discovered that it was part of the Puzzle Boy series, as well as the predecessor to Amazing Tater. That's one of those games I would love to play, but not for $150.

Anyway, going back to your collection: You definitely have time to wait and to see how things turn out in the future. With all the games you own, you have plenty to occupy yourself with while you shop for the remaining games over the next few years.
