Since my comment on PB & Jason turned into its own monster, I decided to post it as a separate blog entry. Mainly because there was a lot of great stuff in the podcast, and I don't want to clog up their front page article with my ramblings. I was typing as I listened, so if something doesn't make sense, blame them for jumping around to different subjects lol. Let's get started!

Podcast Beginning

Some screen resolutions we get from games on home televisions are ridiculous. FF XIII was REALLY bad. I had to sit so dang close because the font was so tiny! So I totally agree with you on that trend just being wrong. At least that game had an option to make the font bigger of what you were highlighting. A subliminal submission of guilt maybe? Decide for yourself!

Whenever I think of comic mischief, I think of the Tom & Jerry cartoons lol. I thought that Earthbound taking place in modern times was fantastic myself, and way ahead of its time.

Journalistic Integrity

The latest in regards to immature game journalism in my opinion was the 1up review of Castlevania LoS MoF for 3DS. He blasted the game for not falling into this narrow minded view of what it should have been. I called him out on it, but all I got for feedback was a couple negative comments. I wasn't fooled by the Phantom Pain either lol. The latest case of Kotaku not having independent integrity is by saying that Disney closing LucasArts, saying oh, that's not a bad thing. The journalistic side of games is quickly being ground beneath the heel of PR of these companies in order to sell stuff. Case in point: Deadspace 3 did NOT deserve a review of 8.0. Ridiculous. I also feel your pain about not getting into E3 just because you're not bought out by the big names. That's some really shady business. There comes a point where getting exclusives from the publishing companies comes at the expense of being a sell out, for sure.

Final Fantasy Again

The characters in FF XIII definitely seemed stereotypical in my eyes. At least it's a step up from FF X, which had the worst cast in the history of FF to me. Yep, even worse than the nameless youths in the original FF III. Because at least their classes became who they were, essentially. They really dropped the ball on XIII as far as upgraded enemies that had the same battle routines and coffee can environments. New Game Plus modes make me excited. heh I loved it in Chrono Trigger. It's really an underused resource in games these days. I may have to give Borderlands a try. You hit the nail on the head as far as what Disney's thoughts could be about closing LucasArts. It's still not right of them to do that in my opinion, however. But that is the danger of being bought out. It's only a matter of time until before they have a monopoly on all entertainment.

Final Fantasy One More Time

YAY! You guys quoted me lol. That really made my night. All The Bravest was an outsourced game. Yeah, the game had good things about it, but how the game was set up, it was designed to make them money. I wrote a review on it, which I think I'll repost here. Though mainly I was thinking about how they command a premium price for their iOS games, which sucks. Everything of theirs is so expensive, like Dimensions originally costing $30 for all the chapters. They've gotten better, with FF V just being released for $15, but they really need to work on their pricing model coming down to $10 or even $5. But the bottom line is they are making money off it, so I guess that is what matters to them.

Be Kind, Rewind

Same thing with SimCity. Who cares if they upset a lot of people with their fake DRM and server crashes, so long as the game sells a million copies (which it did, btw). But I disagree with you saying that people blame the developers for bad games. At least for me, when a substandard game comes out, I blame the publishers. They have a massive amount of influence on how a game is developed. For instance, going back to Dead Space 3, you can tell that the DLC was unneeded. Same thing with the frustration of playing Tomb Raider online. They just had to put it in there, because the business side thinks that is what is going to make them money. But like you said, in the long run, they will lose their base. Hopefully, they can change their ways and make great games again without making customers feel like they are being ripped off.

That's all I got! I leave you with a handshake. Good job!

You made some great points here. First off about the resolution issues. I've been toying with the idea of going retro for my older systems. Getting a good Sony or RCA flat screen, the old fat kind! PS1,PS2,and XBOX games might look better on that. I remember them looking better. Very few game journalists I respect anymore. The ones on Rev3 are pretty good. Especially with Adam Sessler at the helm now. And you know how I feel about multiplayer as of late. It truly is horrible in every way. Ironic that Call Of Duty can get it right, but others cannot. Perhaps it's because they don't give a crap? Must be considering the level of play in some games. I try to love Final Fantasy,I really do. But they need to stop trying to make them so action oriented and get back to better RPG mechanics.

Yeah, the podcast was a pretty cool listen. I think the problem with multiplayer is that people like and want to play online with friends, but some developers just aren't getting it. I think it needs to be started at least halfway through development, if not sooner. Instead of it being an afterthought because the bigwigs told them to do it, why not incorporate it into the experience better? That's not to say that it should be the only concern when making a game. Some focus on multiplayer so much that the storyline/ campaign of a game suffers.

As far as Final Fantasy, I'm not a big fan of the actiony stuff, either. Even though I didn't like FF X, I thought that the battle system was one of the best. I also really liked the Tactics system as well. I think they should have gone with a mechanic more similar to those instead of the flashy stuff we got with FF XIII.
