The Getaway

Just wanted to say a few words about one of my favorite crime games,The Getaway[for PS2]. It was developed and released by Team Soho in 2002. At the time it was getting a lot of attention due to the detailed recreation of London they pulled off. It's amazing how massive the game world is. You play as two different characters. One is a Detective Constable named Frank Carter. The other is Mark Hammond,an ex bank robber who has recently been released from prison. He comes home to his wife and child to try to lead a straight life. Things go horribly wrong one morning when his family is attacked in the street outside their building. His wife is shot and killed. And his son,Alex, gets kidnapped. Mark is wrongly implicated in the crime and finds himself on the run again. The kidnappers are the Bethnal Green Mob,led by Charlie Jolson. He blackmails Mark into doing a series of criminal tasks for him in order to free his son. These tasks include inciting a turf war and attacking a police station to free a member of Jolson's gang from police custody. There are some amazing gun battles in the game. Gets pretty intense in that police station as well as at a large museum near the park. There is a lot of driving as well as shooting. Most of the vehicles are licensed ones, you drive Saab,Lexus, and Fiat cars and trucks.

Notice the blinking turn signal there? That's how you navigate the city. Takes a bit of getting used to. They were trying to eliminate a big HUD display to avoid distractions to the gamer. When you get hurt you start to limp and bleed through your clothes. You then duck behind cover to heal up a bit before continuing the fight. The voice acting is superb and helps with making it a cinematic experience all the way to the end.

It does get bloody and graphic at points. But nothing you wouldn"t see in a GTA title. Driving parts are a blast. It's fun just to wreck vehicles and watch them catch on fire. Gunplay is tricky because you aim down the gun, using natural gun sights to aim at targets. Once you have the hang of it it adds some accuracy to combat, though.

There was a very good sequel to the game. Should have been a third, but it got cancelled.

One of the inspirations for The Getaway is the film Snatch. It featured some of my favorite British actors in some cool roles. Jason Statham was fantastic. But it was Brad Pitt who I liked the most. His character is kind of a gypsy fellow[like the TV show about the Irish gypsies who marry really young]who has such a weird accent he's tough to understand. But he nailed it. Ends up being the funniest guy in the entire movie. I highly recommend seeing this if you like crime films with a sense of fun to them.

What I'm listening to today........

You hear that EA and Microsoft? Lemmy is talkin' to you!

Snatch is one of my favourite films.  I had watched it so many times over the course of a year that I nearly had all of the dialog memorized.

It is most definitely a classic to me. You look at some of those actors and what they are doing today. Fine work all around. But all in the same film  was just tremendously good.

My only wish is that the third one had come out on PS3. Don't know what happened there, buy I think it was a financial decision on the part of Team Soho.

I'm surprised I missed this one but being I have a PS2 not all is lost! I may pick it up still if I'm able to someday.

It is very easy to find and cheap. Well worth it if you like a British take on an open world GTA style crime drama.

Getaway always did sound cool, I like the idea of more realism and less HUD.

Like the songs today. I remember Tom Arayas saying he was Roman Catholic. I was like what church do you go to exactly where you're not constantly given looks? lol Well, I guess that little snippet doesn't mean he goes necessarily, and maybe people don't recognize him, anyway.

When I went to Ozzfest 2008, King was doing a meet-and-greet and signing autographs, meaning we all got fun pamphlets about what hell is like for sinners. I wish I met him, but he and I don't always share the same opinions. He apparently can only stand the heavy stuff, I like it all, he thinks Metallica's S&M was a cheesy form of fellating themselves, I think it's one of their best, etc.

I love Lemmy's voice, and that was a cool song I'd never heard before. I think I'm gonna watch Lemmy interviews on Youtube all day now, maybe even that Motorhead documentary. Anyway, I never thought I'd have to explain this to a grown business man, but could someone explain to Orth that vacuums don't need to buffer to get going? Dear God, the things on that man's twitter feed before it went private.

I was kind of nervous using a Slayer song today. Some people find them very sacreligious. I myself did until I learned more about them and saw them play. Such great musicians,I think that gets overlooked. I take the lyrics with a grain of salt. Tom Araya is not a Satanist or even close to that. Maybe just anti-church/organized religion. Kinda like Lemmy is as well. King is dead wrong about Metallica S&M,that is one fantasic album. You should watch the Lemmy documentary,it's very interesting and I came away with a whole new opinion of him. He's actually a very nice guy. I saw them at a club show in Sauget,Illinois one time at Pop's. After the show he sat and chatted with fans for two hours! So did Phil and Mikkee. They signed stuff and were very cordial with everyone there.

This game tended to get overlooked. Never knew why. It's very British...not everyone's cup of tea(excuse the pun)for sure.  But the story is really good and the characters have great personality about them.

I bought a copy of The Getaway a while back and have never put it into the PS2. I suppose I should do that someday soon, before the graphics really start to look too dated.
