Damn it Feels Good to Enjoy A J-RPG Again!

In my last blog, I mentioned that when I finished playing Ys, I would give Falcom's other big series Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky a go. Well, I'm about 20 hours into this roughly 50 hour game and I'm having a goddamned ball!

I was a little hesitant going into Trails of the Sky though. For a start, I'm not a big J-RPG lover. In fact, the last true J-RPG I remember falling in love with was maybe Final Fantasy X, unless you count Xenoblade Chronicles X, which I'm not sure I do even though the title looks like an edgy early 2000's chatroom name.

The second hurdle I had to get over were the graphics, which look kinda PS1-ish. However, I was almost immediately won over by the charming characters and wonderful music.

Let's get it straight, I am LOVING this game. Like, if things keep going this may earn a place in my top 50 loving this game. There are just so many things I love about it. So I'm going to list a few off.

 - I love the way the game starts off with you getting to know the starting town and not really venturing far away from it for about 6 or 7 hours. That may sound boring and tedious, but somehow they manage it, and you become intimately familiar with the area and its inhabitants as though this were your own home town. It makes it so this is a place you kind of don't want to leave, yet at the same time it makes going to new places feel like an adventure. I know other games do it too, but it never captivated me as much as it does here.

- I love the little character touches. Sure, this game is pretty darn anime at times, but each character has little touches that make them feel much more real and 3 dimensional than your stock J-RPG character.

-I love that Falcom seems to have a Harmonica fetish, and that Joshua plays Feena's melody from Ys.

- I love reading about the history of this place, and just how dark some of the history is juxtaposed with just how determined and optimistic the central characters are. It warms my old jaded heart in a way I thought this genre never would.

-I love that dialogue in this game is pretty well written and super rounded. It actually feels like a reward rather than a hindrance!

-I love that the combat system is a mashup of traditional turn based JRPG fare and strategy RPG ala Fire Emblem.

-I love that if you die you can immediately retry that exact fight without having to load a prior save.

-And I love the fact that you have a 100% success rate for fleeing fights unless it's a boss.

I only really have two problems with the game so far. Firstly, the combat system is utterly fantastic when you're fighting tough enemies and bosses. When you're just fighting trash mobs though the system can get tedious as fights tend to drag on longer than they should.

The other is a bit SJW-ey but the game is a touch on the homophobic side. This is a game from the early 2000's from Japan that has only just been localised recently, but you'd think said translation team could have dialed down on that aspect a little bit, especially when they're pretty good about most other things. It's far from a deal breaker though and is just a touch irritating.

Well that about does it. If you like JRPGs you owe it to yourself to try out this marvellous gem of a game! It's on PC and PSP, though you can pick it up on Vita too.

I own this one on PC and PSP. I've started it on both systems and for the most part I really like it. I just seem to drift off to another game after a while. Maybe it's the fact that I grab too many Bracer quests and then get lost.

Bilby's laptop can run this game and it's not very good. You could always try buying it on Steam (it's $14.99) and if it doesn't work you can get a refund.

I try to not to use my laptop for gaming. It's my writing and photography tool. Not to mention, no wifi and my kitchen chairs are godawful uncomfortable.

I like this game, but I played it on my PSP, and then when I got my vita I sort of lost interest.  I really like this game though, it's really chill and I too like the optimism, which feels fresh when usually in the genre it feels fake.  It's a great world, and I bought the sequel when it came out, but couldn't really play it cause i didn't finish the first.  I would like to start over again someday though, they're really high quality games.

Yeah. I can see people losing interest at points, as it feels very episodic and like it wants you to complete all of the sidequests before moving on with the plot, even if they aren't all at the same level of quality.

That said I feel like from the end of Chapter 3 on is the really good stuff, where you keep finding out revelations about the world and characters. I'm really looking forward to playing the next one and then Trails in Cold Steel on Vita, which is supposedly like a mashup of this and Persona 4 but set in Erebonia, which should be interesting considering the backstory of Skies.

i didn't dig the voice acting and stuff for Cold Steel, and got sick of it early.  Maybe I should have given it more of a chance.  I prefer the silent dialogue of Trails in the Sky

I know that feeling. I've also been playing through the FF games. Just got to X... and yeesh I do not remember Tidas being as insufferable as he was here. Wakka also makes me want to shove that damned Blitzball down his throat. I almost wish FF had have stuck to silent text.

I heard all about this game on Axe of the Blood God podcast. I'd love to see the graphics on my Vita. I have the old OLED screen one, and it makes things look fantastic.

Oh man I never even knew OLED Vita's existed. That's awesome! Idk if this is a game to test graphics on by any stretch of the imagination though lol.

I was on the fence about getting a Vita a few years ago, but when they announced they were changing the screen on it, I felt I had to get one before that happened.

I started playing Xanadu Next which is also a Falcom game and actually quite love it. It also has a PS1 graphics look and a mix of Diablo with zelda gameplay. There is a main hub town with shops to buy new weapons gear and a clicky top down hack n slash combat like diablo, but there are also dungeons and areas that require keys to proceed further, which you get from enemy drops or shops. The music is fantastic. My only issue with it is that the inventory seems to be buggy. I can't equip or use items in the lower half of the inventory screen for some reason which has made the game unplayable for me. It is really good though, but the bug is a deal breaker. I should jump on to Trails and the Sequel then. The Xanadu world is also interconnected, like souls which I quite loved actually.

I tried Xanadu but got stuck early on. I should give it another go soon since it seemed kind of cool.

Trails of the Sky is different from their other output in that the primary focus is storytelling. The story is good if cliched and simple, but it's also more about being bright and cheery with occasional moments of darkness. Just a bit of a warning if you're going in from their darker more action-ey routes, as this is a straight up turn based j-rpg, albeit with a semi-unique and engaging battle system.

Where did you get stuck in Xanadu Next? There are obstacles that require special upgrades to unlock, like Metroid, and there are crate and switch puzzles, but it seems pretty linear and actiony. I ended up DLing a JPN version w/ ENG patch because I enjoyed it so much. Its very grindy though, like Diablo. For some reason the JPN version looks sharper? Odd.
Can you play Trails w/ mouse and Keyboard or is it better w controller? I'm playing Xanadu w M&K.

You can play with a mouse and keyboard or gamepad. I prefer gamepad for 3rd person games like this m+k is totally valid, and both the gamepad and keyboard are rebindable.

In Xanadu I encountered a bug where I couldn't open a door. It wasn't that I didn't have the key or anything, I just couldn't interact with it. I figured I'd try again later but I started playing other things and sort of forgot about it.

And that is odd. Is it just a resolution thing?

About the resolution, I don't know? I played the GOG version and it seems to have less settings options than the JPN version I DL. The GOG version looked really washed out and a bit blurry, but the JPN version seems to be much sharper for some reason, not sure why? Again, the JPN version seems to have more graphics options in a seperate menu. The screenshots on gog are much sharper and cleaner than the game I played. I don't know what thats about? Bad port maybe? But it was originally released on PC, so I don't get that.
