I reviewed Infinity Gene a few years ago. As far as Space Invaders updates go, I really prefer Space Invaders Extreme. Taito is awesome.

This is a game you should play. Why? Because it's fun, that's why! It's one of those upgraded retro games like Pac-Man Championship Edition. The gameplay is more like Galaga in that you're shooting aliens that fly across the screen. I bought and played the Playstation Network version for $10 and had a really good time.
Firstly, you'll notice that the graphics have a distinctly retro feel to them. Instead of redesigning everything, they took the core aesthetic feel and gave it a shot of steroids. It starts off like this:
And goes to stuff like this:
Each stage you complete turns the game more into a shoot-'em-up. The enemy formations are varied and fly across the screen at regular intervals, so you don't have to kill everything in order to survive. And you are moving ever so forward towards the boss. A couple of them are even larger than the screen. The game isn't so much a bullet hell game in that you are overwhelmed because most times, you are safe at the bottom of the screen. Although you will do your fair share of dodging. Plus, the game gets into a sort of pseudo 3D play towards the end.
I think what I like most about it is unlocking new ships and trying them out. There are 10 in total, from standard shots to gravity bombs and laser ships. They really do change how you play though each stage. You also get upgrades from the UFO's, so your weapons can become more powerful. The thing with the unlockables is that the more points you get, you "level up" (evolve) and unlock more stuff like extra lives and background music to use. There are 30 stages in the Normal Mode. Also, there are other modes. One is a Challenge Mode which gives you random stages. Another is a Music Mode, where you play a stage which uses a track stored on your hard drive. It's pretty challenging to try to clear those because they throw a lot of stuff at you, and you have to survive for the duration of the song. Speaking of the music, the soundtrack is really good. It's gets into all sorts of techno and electronica. Overall, I don't like Schmups all that much, but this game is really cool. The game can be hard sometimes, but it's never unfair. Definitely give the demo a try to see if you like it.
