What I Played During Thanksgiving

So over the Thanksgiving Holiday I really didn't play much in terms of console games because I was spending time with the family, usually in front of the television watching sports (I see what you did NFL Schedulers having the Cowboys play the Indians on Thanksgiving.) When I did try something non tablet based I ended up having to reinstall the game, but more on that later on. Anyways let's review what I played during Thanksgiving.

Chris Plays...

Grand Theft Auto V – PC: So while watching YouTube videos on backpacks (its my new random thing) I saw a thumbnail for a high definition mod for the game. Naturally I watched for about 5 minutes before wanting to install it. Of course I check my mods folder and I already downloaded the files and I was good to go. I followed the instructions and the game crashes. I try loading a couple of other times and more crashes. Eventually I find out that the only way to get rid of this mod is to uninstall the game. All 60GB. I spend the next couple of hours reinstalling the game and I have been slowly adding the mods back into this fresh install. No more HD mod for me because it wasn't worth the headache and the wait time to reinstall.

In other GTA news I tried out a new mod last night and I really like it

Having Lightning McQueen while speeding through Los Santos makes the game that much more fun. I'm going to try to reinstall the Batmobiles and the Back to the Future DeLorean, but for now my current favorite car is this bad boy.

Sega Genesis Handheld – Handheld:

I've been playing random Genesis games on here instead of my laptop and I really like it. I tried playing games off the SD card like Gunstar Heroes, GP Monaco, Mutant League Football and the games play fine. There isn't any problems with the actual games. As for the preloaded goodies like Mortal Kombat and Sonic they all play like the originals. Heck I even used the codes to get blood (ABACABB) and the cheat menu (Down, Up, Left, Left, A, Right, Down) and they work fine. There are a couple of things that I don't like. The first being there are no save slots like those that can be found on emulators. The games are presented like they were on the original console. The other thing is that the handheld always loads the SD card. It would have been nice if it would remember what games are on the SD card but it's not a big hassle. It takes 10 seconds to read through the card, maybe less if there wasn't the entire library on the card. Looking back high school Chris wouldn't complain about this because he was perfectly happy carrying around a Game Gear, a bunch of games, batteries (eventually a battery pack).

Now for the tablet games

Microsoft Solitaire – iOS

I actually saw this pop up in the Google Play Store while on my Android tablet. For some reason it keeps crashing on my Android tablet but it works fine on my iPad.

I see some of the old favorites I used to spend a ton of time playing when I got my first desktop in college. I was like everyone else who got a computer for school work, but played a bunch of the games the computer came with along with a couple of games I eventually bought. Anyways Solitaire connects with my X-Box account and if you see me playing this its on the iPad/iPhone. The games look better than the Windows 95 stuff but still play the same. I don't get why there is a Premium version of this, and why there are/will be ads. It was fine as a throw in back in the glory days of Windows 95, but now in a tablet world everything needs an ad. Another problem I'm finding is that it has problems connecting/syncing to my X-Box account. Anyways I'm spending a lot of time playing Classic Solitaire and Free Cell.

Gear Club – iOS:

Before I left Hawaii I unlocked this car

I used it maybe once or twice because I already bought a car in its class, but I'm still appreciative none the less. I'm playing maybe two or three races per sitting now and it's getting tougher to save enough cash to buy another car in a higher class. The Corvette still handles like a car on ice but other than that I am slowly progressing through it's level of races. I wish I was able to sell off older cars to make some cash. It would make it easier to buy newer cars.

The Fighting Games: Mortal Kombat & InJustice – Android:

While in Hawaii my cousin who plays Mortal Kombat all the time, told me that there are these new card packs that have these special epic cards. At 360 MK coins (the premium currency) it's a little steep but since I am using a hack on money my cousin decided to buy a couple of packs to see what they come with

I have the three special epic cards but they are almost impossible to find. It feels like they show up once every 20-30 packs and trying to find seven of each is going to be almost impossible. In place of the epic cards you get one gold card which isn't too bad. The pack also contains two gear cards, and a bunch of level up cards.

I've been playing some of the solo missions along with some of the new Cyrax tournament where after finishing the normal and hard modes you get Cyrax cards.

For Injustice Special Cards I've missed there are more TV/Movie Tie-In cards which aren't as difficult to find as the Mortal Kombat cards. There are Batman vs Superman cards and the Joker from Suicide Squad

I don't play this game as much (no idea why) but it seems to run a lot better on my tablet than Mortal Kombat.

The one thing that bugs me about these freemium fighting games is this

Look at the prices for these packs. I don't care how much I like a game, there is no way I'm spending that kind of money for DLC. Hell I could buy the full game on multiple platforms and not spend $75. Hell when Injustice was new I paid less for the vanilla copy than what that pack is going for. That's insane....more power to you folks who spent that money.

Alright Pixlpeeps I am off. It's a chilly day here in Southern California and once again I'm debating if I should go to Dunkin Donuts for some food. Have a good week!

That's all for now, more later!

-Chris

ha ha I didn't realize the cowboys and indians thing. And the cowboys won, ha.

that McQueen mod is fucking funny.

I wouldn't mind having one of those Sega thingies. I miss those games, and it's just never the same on a PS4/Vita, etc.

Yeah the NFL got a sneaky, its a shame the Cowboys didn't wear their throwbacks but that's what happens when the NFL has a one helmet rule.

Lightning McQueen is funny. I tried KITT but it doesn't seem to work right. Oh well.

It's a cool little handheld. Doesn't weigh anything, and the games play fine.

Very jealous of the Sega gizmo. I have a Game Gear and four games that I found at a Salvation Army thriftstore many years ago and paid ten bucks for, along with a case. The sound doesn't work, but everything else does.

It's a cool little handheld. Funny you mention Salvation Army, years ago when the local thrift stores still sold a ton of games I found a beat up Game Gear. The sound is terrible but the screen is still really nice, which is the opposite of the Game Gear I had since high school.

Damn that Sega Genesis Handheld looks sweet. I'd totally use it just to play Gunstar heroes. Is Phantasy Star or Castlevania Bloodlines on there? How much did it cost?

I really like the idea of playing older games on handheld. For one thing, the smaller screen means the lower resolution isn't as noticable. I've been playing FFIX on my Vita and it looks quite good despite it's age, but I feel like if I played it on my TV or PC monitor it wouldn't hold up nearly as well. Plus, I like the idea that if I'm feeling shitty or depressed I can just regress into my childhood for a moment and have some fond memories to cheer me up.

P.S. that Cars mod looks both hilarious and mildly unnerving. It would be great if it played Cars quotes whenever you ran someone over.

The handheld was $30 on Black Friday, but usually at Toys R Us they go for $40. Amazon Link

It comes with 80 games but the ones you mentioned aren't on there. I loaded up a 4GB SD Card with the Genesis library.

Yeah the older games don't look good on big screens, but the smaller ones they look fine. I really liked how they looked on the PSP screen.

I wish there were more mods like that but can you imagine the lawsuit. It would be a bigger story than the Galaxy S7 Sticky Bomb mod...I really need to install that mod again.

I always bring a handheld to family get togethers but I can never find a moment to use it.

I'm the same way, especially for extended trips.
