I JUST want to play video games...

Video game companies have been looking to make the game console the hub of your living room entertainment and beyond for years.

Going as far back as the Odyssey II, this game console featured a full keyboard and expansion module capabilities, its clear Magnavox had visions of their console expanding into a family computer.  Later consoles integrated computer-like features and eventually primitive online play, like the Sega Channel for the Genesis and the XBAND which allowed online play on both 16Bit rivals.

The introduction of CD-Rom really pushed this idea further, the Panasonic 3DO, Phillips CD-i, TurboGrafx-16, and later the Dreamcast all tried incorporating other types of media into the console like dedicated movie formats and music CD cabability.

The PS2 and original Xbox nearly succeeded with a media player, ability to play music CD's and DVD movies, and successful online play.

Now with PS3 and 360, they finally nailed it and now some people use their consoles more for streaming movies and TV through Netflix and Hulu than playing video games. Online play is the norm and it actually works well thanks to faster speeds. We've also seen successful crazy periferal controllers with Kinect and Wii. Remember the NES Power Glove and U-Force? Remember the Sega Activator, Menacer and SNES Super Scope? Remember Sony EyeToy? Most of these were flops before they even came out. While Kinect, Move, and Wii are not perfect, they are accepted and supported by the gaming masses.

Sony and Microsoft have certainly taken notice and are going full steam ahead with trying to out-do each other in every area of interactivity and social media with the games themselves being an afterthought. From Sony setting us up to "share" our gaming exploits with the rest of the world with the touch of a button, and Microsofts Eye of Sauron watching and listening to our every move, it seems like it may all be just a bit too much. Rumor has it 720 will always be on-line and its integrated Kinect always active. They recently boasted of a feature that will pause your movie when it sees you've turned your head away. Ok, awesome, great, wow. So does this mean when you're watching pRon it will fast forward through the boring parts when it sees you stopped fapping? Will it then suggest other titles you may enjoy that are similar when someone else turns on the system?

These guys need to RELAX. I just want my consoles to PLAY GAMES, as I hear more about what Sony and M$ have up their sleeves, the Ouya is looking better and better.

I actually like the incorporation of other media, provided the games are still quality. For instance, the main reason I'd consider buying a PS3 at this point is that I could watch Blu-Rays on it AND play Bioshock Infinite. Then I'd have a new Blu Ray player AND a new console that connects to the internet. Win-win-win.

Still, it was an interesting trip down memory lane seeing what you mentioned, particularly the Power Glove and Superscope, and I agree the social aspect of some of this stuff is annoying and creepy if it's not immediately obvious how to turn it off. I actually spent a few minutes yesterday trying to help an ex girlfriend get a Spotify playlist she was listening to off her facebook feed. And that pause when your head turns feature sounds incredibly frustrating. I'll tell it to pause when I want it to pause, dammit!

So I see your point, but at the same time I don't think having a machine that can do things besides gaming is a bad thing, as long as it doesn't undermine the games... or have an always-online requirement, or get rid of backwards compatibility, those two things bother me, or at least the latter would if I had owned a 360 or PS3.

Don't get me wrong, I like BluRay on PS3 and being able to watch Netflix and HBO GO, its just this other wacky stuff I can do without. I don't want to tell the world how much video games I play, and sorry, call me old fashioned but I'm all set with "always on" and if you can't turn off the kinect features than I'm done with that, too. Deal with THAT, Microsoft

I like the current media offerings they have now, and would've been fine if they'd just refined those and added the streaming/recording features of the PS4. Anything beyond that means little to me, and will only add excess costs that will keep me from buying either.

Also, LOL @ Eye of Sauron. XD

I don't mind Netflix/AIV, and I don't mind sharing my experiences with my gaming friends over the Internet, as long as all of that is optional. Where I draw the line: forced online play and having control of my playing in the hands of MS/Sony/EA/Ubisoft/whoever.

exactly, I think its all too overboard.

I don't use any of my consoles for anything other than playing games . Convergence is a stupid concept IMO. If you use a device for 4 different things it will die 4 times faster. It also means that instead of doing 1 thing really well it does 3 other things passably at best. For example, a DVD player can also play CDs but compared to a dedicated CD player the sound from CDs is crap because it's not designed for that purpose .

Bottom line I too only want a game system to play games.

Very true, those all-in-1 Tv/dvd/vhs players always had a poor version of one of those components and if the one died, the whole thing was kind of pointless. Truth be told I don't mind streamlining the living room of all its dedicated boxes, but I don't want to do so with a sacrifice in quality.

Keep on preaching man!  TO hell with all in one devices! I get the point, but I want gaming first, because gaming is what I truly love.  Say what you want about the Wii U, at least it's a genuine gaming device.

a genuine gaming device from a genuine gaming company. The last of its kind, we should all support it just for that reason alone. Not happy with the games so far? Just wait, if anything Nintendo knows software, Its coming.

Some of the other things consoles can do now are nice, like Netflix, but playing games is my top priority.

Yeah most of these new features they are touting are just stupid "Hey look what we can do!" gimmicks. 'M all for innovation and coming up with tech that can revolutionize how we play games. The Wii actually did a pretty good job with this. But even it had its limits and started to feel gimmicky, plus it just didn't get that much support. I'm with you, I just want good games and a system that won't crap out after a year.

I remember I was fine as a fiddle with my PS2 having no hard-drive. Pretty much all I could do with it is play games & the occasional movie and this was no detriment to my enjoyment.

I will say it's "nice" to be able to chat with friends and game with them occasionally. The 360 brought that to the table and I'm grateful for it.

As for all that other stuff? Ah, I rather companies just focus on making the best and most affordable game system. My computer and other devices can do just about all the "extra stuff" they've been advertising already.

My biggest concern this generation is "privacy". It seems both consoles and websites have gotten more intrusive about sharing my information with everyone else and I don't know how I feel about that. Granted, I'm not engaged in any illegal activity but when it gets to the point my friends could possibly know what porn I'm watching then it has gone too far!

privacy IS the issue. Orwell predicted a society with zero privacy as "big brother" is always watching, what he didn't know is societey would gladly give up the privicy becuase its in exchange for swanky new electronics and communication. Where will it end? Like Dave Mustaine wrote; "Next thing you know they'll take my thoughts away".

Yeah, although I love being able to stream movies and TVs with my consoles, I'd really rather just be able to game. Plus, I'd love to be able to game without having to deal with an update every time I put a new game in, or one that I haven't played in a while. That's just a pain in the ass.

yeah updates are annoying. Seems there are crazy updates for Windows XP these days, have to wait 20 minutes just to browse the web lately.
