Cary's Video Game Christmas Radio

Are there any songs in video games that remind you of Christmas?  Well I have some, and I thought I’d share them with you.  So here are ten of them.  Have a listen and get into the video game Christmas spirit!

Jazz Jackrabbit Holiday Hare

Back before the Internet and Steam and such, some computer games gained fame through something called shareware.  They would be disks that had demos of games on them, and if you liked the game, there was a phone number usually in the game or on the disk that you could call and order the full title.  Jazz Jackrabbit was one of those games that started that way.  The first Jazz Jackrabbit game played like a cross between Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog, and the second played more like Earthworm Jim meets Sonic.  There was a third one on GBA that played like a mix of Earthworm Jim and Duck Dodgers, but it wasn’t as good.  People complain on YouTube about this series not aging as well, but I have good memories with the series myself.  One of the shareware disks they sent out had levels with a Christmas theme with a fitting soundtrack.  So here it is:

Lemmings 2: Polar Tribe

Another good example of shareware helping a game become popular is Lemmings.  While I was into Lemmings right from the start, a lot of people learned about it from shareware disks that had a version of it called Winter Lemmings.  In this one, the Lemmings roam about in snowy environments while wearing Santa hats.  There is also Christmas music in the background, too.  I’m actually posting the music from the Polar Tribe from Lemmings 2 here, though.  It’s the same stuff, I just think it sounds better.

Loco Roco Christmas Level

I’ve got one last demo themed Christmas level.  Much later on, when the PSP was big, Loco Roco was one of my most favorite titles on that system.  Around Christmastime, they released a demo of a Christmas level with snow, candy canes, and gingerbread men to roll around in.  I miss those days because that demo was free to download, whereas nowadays you’d have to pay for it.  Anyway, here’s the song they play in the background.

Donkey Kong Country 3 Christmas Bonus Levels

I’m convinced some game companies just flat out love Christmas.  Rareware is one of those companies, I think.  DKC3 is a special game to me because it’s one of the first games I ever reviewed professionally.  And it has lots of hidden secrets, too!  When you select a file, you can add your name.  But if you type in other words or letter combinations, you can activate secret codes.  If you enter in “Merry,” all the bananas in the bonus stages will change to Christmas ornaments and presents, and they play a festive tune in the background.  Did you know about that trick?

Diddy Kong Racing: Frosty Village

Another Rare game with heavy Christmas themes is Diddy Kong Racing.  There’s a whole world with ice tracks, and while they’re all somewhat Christmas-y, the one that sticks out the most to me is Frosty Village.  There are snow covered cottages and paths lined with lightposts and pine trees.  And this bouncy tune plays in the background as you race.

Banjo-Kazooie:  Freezeasy Peak

But probably Rare’s ultimate Christmas level is Freezeasy Peak from Banjo-Kazooie.  In this level, you’ll climb a giant snowman, go sled racing, deliver presents to young polar bears, and even decorate a Christmas tree!  It’s probably one of the best examples of a Christmas level in gaming!  And here’s its music.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn: Snowy Fields

For some reason, Kirby’s Epic Yarn always makes me think of Christmas.  I don’t know exactly why, but I think a lot of it has to do with the music.  I think you’ll understand why after this blog.  Anyway, here’s the most obvious tune.  They play it during one of the ice levels.  It just makes me think of stuff you can do outside in the snow, like sledding, snowball fights, and building a snowman.  Of course, living in Texas, I don’t have much personal experience with those activities, but that’s OK, as I’m not much of a fan of snow and cold weather anyway.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn: Cozy Cabin

And here’s an example of a song that reminds me of what you can do inside when it snows.  It just makes me think of curling up in a blanket by the fireplace or baking cookies in the kitchen.  What’s really weird is that even though this song is very relaxing, the level they play it in the game is very frantic.  You enter these mitten-shaped cabins and the ‘roof’ will sew down from above, and you must dash out of the mitten buildings before they close in on you!

Kirby’s Epic Yarn: Rainbow Falls

Even the music in this game that’s NOT in ice levels sounds Christmas-y to me.  Like this one.  I think it’s the instrumentation, like heavy use of muted brass, and the syncopated rhythms that make me think that way, as those elements are also found in many classic Christmas tunes.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn: Secret Island

I guess this one doesn’t sound Christmas-like at all, as it is played on one of the tropical stages.  But the jazzy piano makes me think of the Peanuts “Linus and Lucy” song, which also makes me think of Christmas.  Basically if you get anything from this blog, it’s that the music in Kirby’s Epic Yarn is very good.  If you like it, you should try Yoshi’s Woolly World, which is made by the same folks.  Although the music in that game doesn’t make me think of Christmas as much.

Merry Christmas!

OK I know what you’re thinking.  “What about Christmas NiGHTS?”  Well you know what?  I never really got into that game and aside from the interesting characters, I don’t really understand what’s the big deal about that game.  Anyway, in the comments section, let me know YOUR favorite video game Christmas songs.

Also, what are your favorite and least favorite Christmas songs in general?  My favorite secular Christmas song is “Snoopy’s Christmas” (the one with the Red Baron), and my favorite religious song is “Do You Hear What I Hear?”  I also like it when the Muppets sing 12 Days of Christmas on the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Special.

My least favorite Christmas songs are Jingle Bell Rock and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree because I feel they are overplayed, and also Walking in a Winter Wonderland and Let it Snow because as I mentioned before, I can’t relate to those songs as well living in Texas!  That’s all for now, later!  --Cary

I always wanted to try Christmas NiGHTS. I do remember that Secret of Mana had a section where you had to rescue Santa Claus. The music for that region wasn't particularly Christmasy.

When I was a kid and playing on the Atari XE, I had a game called Special Delivery where you were Santa Claus. In the flying stages you'd have to catch presents dropped by angels (and avoid presents dropped by red angels, who were ostensibly Satan's angels) and avoid mountains and trees. If you caught a certain quota of presents, you'd then have to land your sleigh on the roof of a big house, climb down the chimney without getting burned, and then sneak presents under the tree without being caught by the kids. If you didn't catch enough, you had to drop the presents you did have into the chimneys of little cottages. Then the game would repeat at a higher difficulty level.

One neat little easter egg in Fallout 4 was how the town in that game would deck itself out in Christmas lights and a Christmas tree on December 25th of the in-game clock.

Yeah I remember that part in Secret of Mana.  I always found that so weird.  Especially since you defeat a Frost Gigas, who ends up being Santa.  The Ice Palace song is kind of cool.

There's not a lot of games where you play as Santa.  I remember one I played on a Genesis emulator called Daze Before Christmas which was pretty weird.  You could get a cup of tea power-up that would turn Santa into an evil version of himself.

The only Christmas-themed game level I've ever played (to my recollection) is Grubbins On Ice, the dlc for Costume Quest, but I can't say as I noticed the music.

As for favorite Christmas music, there's a lot I like. Mostly folk stuff that most people have never heard of and traditional carols and hymns. The stuff I tend not to like is the secular stuff, especially the stuff that's been given the modern pop treatment. It's kind of like someone scraping their fingernails down the blackboard as far as I'm concerned. I was planning on doing a Christmas music blog soon, so you can see what I do like when I write it.

As I've gotten older, I've become less and less tolerant of the secular Christmas songs.

I forgot about that JOhn Denver cover.  My dad loves him, and I got him an Xmas CD by him for xmas. I wonder if its on it.

You ever play the Genesis game where you play as Santa? I think there's a sequel too.

I played that Santa game on a Genesis emulator back when I was in college.  It was called Daze Before Christmas.  I didn't know there was a sequel.

I could be wrong about that.  I played it on an emulator only too.

Maybe when I have time and if I feel like it, I'll do some research to see if there really was a sequel.  Would be interesting if there was.

It may not be a Christmas game, but in Sonic: Lost World I really enjoyed Snowball Waltz, even if the level was a bit meh. Or Snowball Park from Super Mario 3D World. I could go on and on, but that would be me going on forever lol.

Yeah some ice levels can feel kind of Christmasy.

The best part of Sonic Lost World was the Yoshi and Zelda DLC.

"Christmas bells those Christmas bells / ring out from the land" I absolutely love the chorus in that Snoopy vs. Red Baron song. So joyful. Also John Denver's "Christmas for Cowboys". My all time favorite low key Xmas song.

I've been thinking a lot about Sumo Santa from Clayfighter 63 1/3. Those silly lines like "Cane pain", come back to me at Xmas time every year. Songs though. . . can't say I have a video game song I think about at Xmas time. Those Rare game soundtracks are so great. Especially Diddy Kong Racing. That Frosty Village song is very familiar to me.

I never played that Clayfighter game.  I wish I did.

Diddy Kong Racing has a lot of good music.  Frosty Village is the one that usually comes to my mind first for some reason.

It's not a great game but it has the Animaniacs voices in it and the one-liners are funny.

The music in Diddy Kong Racing has really stuck with me all these years. Donkey Kong Country too. Those Rare guys sure did some good music in their games.

I rented and played the first two Clayfighter games on the SNES.  But by the time that the N64 one came out, it was hard for me to find a place that I could rent it at, and I was a poor college student and couldn't buy it anyway.

Rare has had some talented music composers, that's for sure.  The one people refer to most is David Wise.

I never played the SNES Clayfighter games. I picked up 63 1/3 Sculptor's Cut from the sale bin at Blockbuster probably a year or two after it came out. It was silly fun and I got another copy for my friend Mark. For both of us this game is in our pantheon of favorite games. Who knew it would become the rarest N64 game. I only wish I had it in the box instead of a rather beaten up loose cart. Not sure if I'd sell it though. It's not available anywhere else.

Ah you're so lucky!  That stinks that it's so hard to find!  I hear it has Earthworm Jim and Boogerman as playable characters, too.  I think I heard that anyway.

So, I had to look it up but Earthworm Jim and Boogerman are in the original game. Here's the four new characters in Sculptor's Cut: Lady Liberty, High Five, Lockjaw Pooch, and Zappa Yow Yow Boyz.

Yeah like I said, I really would've liked to have played that one.  Guess we can't play them all!

A lot of games you mentioned really bring me back. I also associate Phendrana Drifts theme from Metroid Prime with Christmas, since it's a snowy level and I got that game for Christmas.

My favorite Christmas song is probably Carol of the Bells or Angels We Have Heard On High (Gloria?).

I never thought to associate Metroid with Christmas!
