I got a $250 year-end bonus from the market. Usually, I'm very responsible and use that money for bills or stash it away in my savings account. But not this year. With The Last Guardian finally released, I was bad, fiscally irresponsible, and totally selfish. I bought a PS4 and two games yesterday. Neither of them was The Last Guardian, but that will be a purchase I make in the near future. I bought a used system from The Game Box, a local indy game store. They're really good about making sure what they sell is in good working order and have a 90 day warranty on every used system they sell. I really wanted a new system, preferably a bundle, but I also wanted to buy local. I was reassured by the warranty and I've been a good customer there since I discovered them four years ago, so I gave up on the visions the scent of new electronics, squared my shoulders, and made my purchase.
I wasn't going to set it up until after Jason went home last night, but for once, he was as interested in a new console as I was and he pestered me to set it up before the last bus back to Portland left. So I did, and we checked out both games I'd purchased (Dragon Quest Heroes and The Order:1886) before I put the unit in stand-by (hoping to charge the controller) and took him to the bus. When I came back, the console would turn on, but the controller wouldn't do anything, even when connected with the cable. So I went online and searched for possible solutions, and then tried them out. No joy. I messaged a couple of friends with more techie know-how than I have, and they tried trouble shooting for me. Still no joy. At this point, I was frustrated and annoyed, and disconnected everything and packed it all back up. Today, I took it all back to the store, walked in and stated "Houston, we have a problem." They checked out the console first, and everything was fine there. Then they tried the controller. Guess what? Wouldn't work. They tried another, and hey, Presto! Worked like a charm. They made sure it worked and was synched to my system, packed everything back up for me, apologized for the inconvenience, and all was well.
Back home, hooked everything back up, and spent a happy couple of hours playing DQ Heroes. I do have to say that so far, I am underwhelmed by DQ Heroes and I hope it gets better. Not thrilled with the change from turn-based to action, and I wish it allowed for more open exploration than it seems to do.
And feel free to make game suggestions. I haven't really been following what's out there because I didn't think I was going to make the leap to the current gen at all, to be honest.
One question I do have is why I'm being asked for my credit card info in order to download and use Netflix. Do I have to have a PS+ subscription to use something I'm already paying for? I really have no desire to get PS+, nor do I want to give Sony my credit card info. EDIT: Fixed the problem by deleting the credit card from my account.
Well, I'm going to go find something for dinner, and then possibly play some more DQ. Good night, Pixlbit Nation!
Oh, I am, believe me! Yeah, I love The Game Box. I took Andrew there when he came up to visit. It's a really nice bunch of people who work there, and no fanboyism from the employees. And I've never gotten attitude for being female from them. All things I've had to deal with when shopping elsewhere.
PS4 recommendations huh? Well most of my favorites are shooters, but know that's not really your thing, but Garden Warfare 2 is third person and pretty fun. Just avoid 1, that one has no campaign. Tearaway Unfolded is an absolute must if you don't have a Vita, Ratchet and Clank is pretty fun, and Until Dawn is cool if you want a good horror game (recommend playing that one with Jason, divide the characters in half and see who can keep more of them alive).
Hope you enjoy the console. It's been underwhelming to me, but between Crash Bandicoot, Spider-Man, and maybe Horizon I think this will be a pretty kick ass year for me.
Thanks, Casey. Until Dawn probably won't be a pick up for me, but it sounds like the kind of game I'd enjoy watching someone else play, though. And I gave up trying to get Jason to game with me years ago, other than the occasional pinball title. I'll look into the others.
I had some fun with both DQ Heroes and Builders but neither really hooked me. I loved Ratchet & Clank this year though. I've been meaning to play those Lucasarts adventure games Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle. They've been remastered and are available to download on PS4. Tales of Bersaria is out this month. I'm curious about that one.
I have like four PS4 games I want this year and three of them are only coming to Japan: Dragon Quest XI, Valkyria Revolution, and Earth Defense Force 5. At least Ni No Kuni II is supposed to arrive this year in NA.
I got TLG as a Christmas gift and it's damn pretty. I haven't played it as much just cause I've been playing through some games I bought on sale.
I'm trying to think of indie titles and RPGs that might suit your taste. I don't know how you feel about FFXV and Inside had gotten some good reviews. I bought Witcher III on sale a while ago, and you may enjoy the Polish lore in that, but I'm not sure about the action- based combat. I uninstalled it to make room for stuff I can get through more quickly like Shadow of Mordor, but I plan to go back; same with Bloodborne.
Weird about Netflix, I don't remember having to do that to get it working. Only annoying thing about video apps is Sony sending emails about "purchases" for $0.
I average about 7-8 games per console cycle and several are always gifts, but the freebies and deals with PS+ have made my library exponentially larger than usual. I understand not wanting it though.
Yeah, that's why I'm not sure about FFXV. I was excited for a FF game whose gameplay I could get into, but found the action combat a bit repetitive in the Platinum demo. I think you can put combat in "wait mode" or something though.
I liked Limbo, but not enough to pay $20 for a similar looking game. From all accounts, it's my loss, but I am looking forward to Into the Woods this month. Just remembered seeing a gameranx video where that was a most anticipated of Jan 2017.
As far as PS4 games, I would actually recommend FFXV. I know you're not into Final Fantasy like you are Dragon Quest, but I really enjoy it, I think there's a demo out there so you can try before you buy. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is another one I love, but I don't know if you played it on the PS3. They did upgrade it to 60 FPS on PS4 and it comes with all DLC included on the disc, so there's that. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is one you might enjoy if you haven't played it on PS2. One under the radar title I enjoyed last year was Nights of Azure. This year I'm looking forward to games like Akiba's Beat, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, and Valkyria Revolution. And Ni no Kuni 2, if it releases this year.
I just got a PS4 on a Black Friday sale for a little over 200 bucks new, so I think that was pretty good. For Christmas I got a few games. Dragon Quest Builders, Tearaway Unfolded, and the Storybook Edition of Odin Sphere. I also ordered Atari Flashback Classics vol. 1 & 2 as well as Dragon Quest Heroes for cheap. Right now I'm also enjoying the PS4 version of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Later on I'd like to get Ratchet & Clank as well as Gravity Rush 1 & 2. And Sony sent me ten bucks so I was able to download Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 as well! And I've been able to review three games on the PS4 already.
You would probably enjoy I am Setsuna. Others have mentioned The Ratchet and Clank game and Valkyria Chronicles. I'm really having fun with World of Final Fantasy too.
You should try out some demos too. You might like Dragon Quest Builders but I'd try iit our first if I were you.
My next big one for the PS4 is Persona 5.
Congratulations. There's some good stuff out for PS4 now, with a lot of promising titles in the future. If you liked Ico, you'll probably love The Last Guardian, as it feels very similar. Most people have recommended all the RPGs, Ratchet, etc. I hear World of Final Fantasy is for fans of the older games, so you MAY like that. I bought Tales of Zestiria but haven't tried it out yet, but there's another RPG. There are demos for Gravity Rush 2 and Nier: Automata on the Playstation Store and they are both very nice if you like action games. I also love the Uncharted and Tomb Raider series.
