New Years Reviews

Let’s start the year off right with more links to reviews I’ve posted at GamerDad.com lately.  As always, please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a comment or a like or two.  I’d really appreciate it.  OK let’s begin!

LEGO Dimensions Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack

Probably one of the most surprising entries in the Wave 2 set of LEGO Dimensions was that Sonic the Hedgehog would be in it!  What’s funny is that Sonic and his level play more like a Sonic game than a LEGO title, and it’s a lot better than some of the more recent Sonic entries!  It also has a bit of a Sonic Generations feel to it since most of the areas are based off of classic Sonic levels.  Unfortunately, it’s also one of the buggiest level packs I’ve ever played.  It froze up on me more than three times.  Usually I would’ve just given up by then, but I really wanted to see all the Sonic pack had to offer.  But I guess Sonic fans would be used to that since most new Sonic games are pretty buggy as well (oooohhh, burn).  I am looking forward to the upcoming Sonic Mania game, though.  I played it at PAX and it feels most like Sonic 3, which is actually a Sonic game I do like.

LEGO Dimensions Adventure Time Fun Pack (And Level Pack)

In my 20 plus years of reviewing games, I’ve played a lot of licensed games, especially from cartoons.  But I think I’ve played more Adventure Time games than any other licensed cartoon video game!  In fact, most of my knowledge of Adventure Time comes from the games, not the show, because I really don’t watch that cartoon much.  The level is based on one of the episodes of the show that won an Emmy, and I do like how it has more of a cel shaded look and animation style than the other LEGO titles.  Pretty decent if you’re an Adventure Time fan.

New Zelda Amiibo

The latest batch of amiibo figures released were Zelda-themed.  My favorite is the 8-bit Link amiibo.  Click on the link if you want to see pictures.  With the toys-to-life genre kind of dying out, I wonder how much Nintendo will support amiibo in 2017?

Bethesda Pinball (PS3)

It’s a Zen Pinball 2/Pinball FX2 3-pack of pinball tables based on popular Bethesda games: Skyrim, Fallout, and Doom.  Believe it or not, my favorite table is the Doom one!  You wouldn’t think it would be, but I found it to be the most fun of the tables!

Steamworld Collection (Wii U)

This is just a collection of two games: Steamworld Dig and Steamworld Heist.  I had already played Dig before this collection.  It’s kind of a cross between Dig Dug, Boulder Dash, Mr. Driller, and Metroid.  It’s really fun but got a bit hard toward the end.  I didn’t think I would like Heist, as it’s more of a strategy game, but I ended up really liking that one as well.  It has really nice 2-D characters and backgrounds.  So pick up this collection if you like quality indie titles.

Hue (Vita)

This is actually a really good 2-D puzzle platformer that’s kind of a more puzzley version of Runbow.  Objects that are the same color as the background disappear, and you can change the background color at will.  With this, you can manipulate blocks and bypass obstacles.  And it’s surprisingly robust and long for an indie game.  If you enjoyed Runbow and like puzzlers, download this if you have a PS4 or Vita.

Reader Review: Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (Vita)

My friend Leroy loves dungeon crawlers, and is a big fan of the Shiren the Wanderer series, so I had him review this one.  If you enjoy anything with “Mystery Dungeon” in the title, you may want to check out this review, as the Shiren the Wanderer games are what started all that off.

Nintendo Socks

For my birthday I got some socks with Nintendo characters on them, and I finally got around to posting pictures of them.  So click on the link if you want to see them.  I like how they look like little sausages.

Conclusions

And that’s all for now!  Thanks so much for reading my reviews and posting comments and likes on them.  I really appreciate it.  HOPEFULLY next time on my blog, I’ll post what games I’m looking forward to in 2017!  Later!  --Cary

Zen Pinball: I have that but I haven't seen the new releases. I would love to play the Doom one.

Zen Pinball 2 and Pinball FX 2 (same game really) is available on nearly all current game consoles, and the Bethesda Pinball was recently released for it.

Doom pinball does sound fun. So would LEGO Sonic without the bugs.

Yeah it surprised me that I found the Doom table the most enjoyable one.

Yeah, I imagine the aesthetic not being your thing, but to be fair you are on the opposing side of the demons.

Yeah none of those Bethesda games interest me, but Doom pinball surprised me the most.

I'm going to try Lego Dimensions pretty soon. I have the Midway level pack but that Adventure Time one looks neat. I tried the Shiren/Etrian Odyssey mashup game a while back. That rogue-like style is neat but tough.

I didn't know there was a Shiren Etrian Odyssey crossover game.  My friend Leroy likes both those titles, so I'm sure he's played it.  I would think.

Oh yea, it was called Etrian Mystery Dungeon for 3DS. Not quite Shiren but definitely a rogue-like in the Etrian Odyssey world.

Well I'm sure my friend played it.  Although he didn't really get into the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games for whatever reason.

Is toys to life dying out?  I thought Skylanders and Lego were doing well, but I don't know a lot about it.  I still have my one, Wolf Link Amiibo

Well they're certainly not selling as much as they used to, and I've read rumors that Activision may not even do a Skylanders title in 2017.  I'll still try and buy every last Amiibo I can before they go out, though.
