BaD: Because You Grew Up

Today one of my clients came to me and asked me if I wanted to see all of his Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. The answer I gave was the only acceptable answer: heck yes I do. Way back when I worked at Toys-R-Us and Yu-Gi-Oh! had just became popular, they asked me if I wanted to host card tournaments for kids on Saturdays. I agreed, and I soon built a pretty good deck of my own. I sort of had to, these kids were good! It was a Light based deck. They were sort of impressed with me.

My client brought down a neatly organized box of cards. For the next hour we sat and went over each card. I wasn't familiar with some of the newer sets, so it was neat to see what he had. I immediately became nostolgic for my own deck. When he asked me what happened to my deck, I shrugged and said that I wasn't sure what happened to it, that it probably got lost in a move at some point. He shook his head and said to me "No, I know what happened. You grew up."

Now I feel old AND I miss my Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Tomorrow he is going to show me his BlazBlue collection. To be fair...at least I know what it is!

Blazblue collection ... of the video games? Or is that also a card game?

Are you a child theapist? That might be too personal.

I still have my Yu Gi Oh! cards. Wonder if they have any value. Pretty sure I have Blue Eyes White Dragon in there. It's rare in the show at least.

The video game collection for Blazblue. That is so funny that you mention Blue Eyes White Dragon because that was one of the first cards we looked at and that was just instant nostalga for me. It all came back. You should check your cards for sure, you never know!

I work for an agency that provides homes for adults with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities. I'm not a licensed therapist, but what I do is very simliar. This particular client is on the autism spectrum, but has no other issues. We always have great conversations.

Oh ok. My best friend works in a similar place. Unfortunately, the one person there who's not as bad as everyone else mentally has just enough IQ to know they hate it. He likes some of the individuals though.

That's the worst. There isn't much you can do but offer support. Gives you a different perspective on life, for sure.

The only Yu-Gi-Oh cards I have are ones based on other Konami games.  I have the Gradius ship, Options, Big Core (from Gradius), Lady Ninja Yae and Sasuke from Goemon, and the stick figures on airplanes from Parodius.  When my little brothers were into that card game, I made them give me any card they had that had a classic Konami character on it.  That was such a popular thing back then.  I remember the cartoon (it was horrible).  There was even a Yu-Gi-Oh cereal at one point!

BlazBlue collection?  Is that a card game now, too?

I more than likely gave my deck to my little brother, who probably destroyed it, lol. BlazBlue is not a card game that I know of. This is some special collectors set he is going to show me. Nothing I would spend my money on, but to each his own!

My nephew was into Yu-Gi-Oh, so of course I supported his habit when he came for his visits in the summer. I never got into it, but it made the apple of my eye happy, so hey, couldn't be a bad thing, right? I still have a couple of magnets from the Yu-Gi-Oh Staks series that he gave me on my fridge, from 15 or so years ago.

15 years ago...it really was that long ago, wasn't it.

Seems like just yesterday, except the apple of my eye is over six feet tall now and turning 21 and has no time for me anymore.

But your client is right, it is because you grew up. I, on the other hand, have been steadfastly refusing to grow up since I hit adulthood. Just ask my nieces and nephews. And at almost 48, if I haven't done it yet, it's not likely to happen.

Haha! Maybe I grew out of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but there are plenty more things I cling to!!

I love card battle games. I have a few of the Yu-Gi-Oh games on PS1. Still haven't played them yet though.

I never got into any aspect of Yu-Gi-Oh! except the cards. Casey tells me there is a free mobile Yu-Gi-Oh! game to play. I'm going to check it out for nostolgia.
