BaD #6 - Proudest gaming accomplishments

This is a quick and not quite under the wire blog. In my defense, I was trapped under a cute, snuggly, sleeping cat who couldn't be disturbed. So I entertained myself by watching High Noon while trapped. Great movie, by the way, if you haven't seen it.

  • Beating Sonic 3 - First and one of the few games I ever managed to finish on the Genesis. I think it was because I could save between levels.
  • Finishing my first RPG - Legend of Dragoon on the PS1. And I did it with some of the weakest characters in my party.
  • Completing Arkham Asylum and getting all the Riddler Challenges without using a walkthrough or any hints outside of the game itself. I was without internet access at home for a month or so, so barring getting into my car and driving to the library to use a computer there, no gamefaqs or other online help.
  • Completing all the races in Sleeping Dogs before Jason's little brother did and with better stats.
  • Getting my first Platinum Trophy, even if it was almost a gimme.
  • Completing Dragon Quest VII on the PS1. That is one long game!

There are probably more, but those are the ones I remember at this moment. What are some of yours?

Nice.

Beating the Devil car in Ridge Racer

Platinum-ing Final Fantasy XIII and Diablo 3 (those were very time consuming)

Beating the first Castlevania as an early teen (2-4 were way easier because you had passwords to save your progress).

Annihilating my friends at Tekken, who were once evenly-matched or better than me.

Beating that damn Emerald Weapon in Final Fantasy VII.

I HATE that Devil car. I stoppe playing Ridge Racer because I can't get passed it.

First time I beat it, it didn't save to the memory card.  Fortunately I had gotten good enough that doing it again wasn't that much of a problem.

Great list!

Dragon Quest 7 on 3DS is draining my will to live so you definitely deserve an award for finishing it. Legend of Dragoon is one of the psone games I loved but didnt finish. I kind of wish it would get ported to PS4 so I could attempt it again.

DQ VII went on forever! Every time I'd think I was almost done, I'd discover that no, I wasn't even close. It actually took me two tries, by the way, about ten or so years apart.

I don't think I have any. Most of the time I just stop playing a game if it becomes like too hard or too long. I did jump up and cheer when I got the last achievement in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Probably not a terribly hard game though.

If you think hard enough about it, I bet there's a moment you're pretty darned happy with yourself over.

It was neat to 100% Lego Star Wars. One hundred percenting anything is pretty rare for me.

See, I knew there had to be something! I think I'm just missing the online co-op achievements for that one.

I seem to remember it was pretty simple like just completing one level with an online player or something like that. It's backwards compatible on Xbox One. I wonder if you can play across 360 and One with that title? Mark and I did that with Ticket to Ride and Minecraft before he got his Xbox One.

In high school I went back to Super Mario Bros. and actually played through to the end. It's not a big deal but I never finished it when I was younger so to finally see the ending was a big deal to me.

Oh I earned a Platinum Trophy on Leap Year. I thought it is cool to see the date under the Platinum Trophy for Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.

It is a big deal when you finish those games from the NES, SNES, and Genesis era. Those games were hard!

High Noon is one of my dad's favorites along with Dr. Zhivago and The Producers. I have only seen The Producers (the original, not the remake).

I beat the first Sonic through emulation, but couldn't beat the final boss on 2 or 3 I think.

I still haven't finished Golden Sun. Hell, I haven't finished but a dungeon or two in that RPG.

I think I've beaten an Arkham game and found riddler trophies with no online help, but it may have been City. Or maybe there were one or two I had to look up, but didn't feel guilty about. Anyway, good job there.

What was the Platinum trophy?

My most recent hard-earned accomplishment was finally getting the last trophy I needed in Arkham Knight to Platinum. Brutality 101 was a bitch and took a year to get even with online help.

Otherwise, I'm just proud of the fact I've actually finished the story in most games I own, though that's becoming less true with all these sales and my lack of time. It was a lot easier to blow through all my Zeldas as a kid than it is now to find time or console space for Witcher III or Bloodborne.

My Platinum is for a game called Afrika, which is essentially a photography simulator. The game itself was kind of disappointing, but it was an easy platinum.

The thing that impressed me the most about High Noon is that the movie more or less is done in real time. The events of the movie happen over an hour and a half, and the length of the movie is an hour and a half. It's really a very well-done movie.

Wow you got a platinum trophy?  I don't even think I have one of those.

My proudest gaming moment really doesn't have to do with a game.  But I'm really proud that I got to write game reviews for The Dallas Morning News.  I'm proud because when I tried out for the gig, I did it all by myself.  Granted I should credit teachers for teaching my how to write and parents for supporting me and raising me, but as far as everything I had to do to try out for the newspaper, it was all me.  And while I haven't been lucky enough to make a career out of it, I still get gaming feathers in my cap because of that opportunity.

When I was a little kid, I was proud when I beat my first game.  It was called Mickey's Space Adventure.  It was kind of a cross between a point and click game and a text adventure.  Anyway, I know it was designed for kids, but I was in kindergarten at the time and I was really proud when I beat it.  I still remember that feeling today, and that's why I have a strong interest in kids' games.

One. And it was an easy one. Knowing I could get it was what pretty much kept me going through the game.

I think your reviewing gig counts. You had to play the games long enough to get a feel for them and then write about them. And you do it well.

This blog entry was all about those little moments that make you feel good. Doesn't matter what the game was, what matters is the emotion.

I'm playing DQ7 (3DS).  I'm enjoying it, but when will this game end?

A long, long time from now Tongue Out. Seriously, though, that may be the longest game I've ever played. I think there's enough content there for two games, to be honest.

There was one that took me forever to figure out. It was actually fairly early in the game, too. It was a matter of lining myself up just right and and getting the camera angle just so.
