Another short blog coming in late in the evening. Closing shifts at the market throw my timing off, and guess what? I pretty much only have closing shifts! At least I get to do stuff with the pup before I go to work.
Anyway, this little entry is about games that I didn't expect to like but did, or didn't expect to like nearly as much as I ended up liking them. If that made any sense to anyone who didn't just work a seven hour shift in a nor'aster dealing with frenzied people buying milk, bread, and bottled water like the end of the world was at hand for the first half of my shift and then standing at my register looking out at the deserted aisles wishing we'd close early for the second half of my shift. And it was cold, so I of course drank way too much of the free coffee available to us in about 50 different flavors and roasts. And now I'm over-caffeinated and still frozen, but safely home. If it didn't, I apologize. I'm over-caffeinated.
Sleeping Dogs - It was a freebie from Games With Gold, so I decided "Why not?" and downloaded it. I started playing, fully expecting to hate the game and end up deleting it. Wrong. Loved it, which surprised both me and Jason, who watched me play for a while and said "This isn't your usual kind of game." I think it may have been the story that hooked me, plus, how can you not love a game that gives you an achievement for killing someone with a fish? And lets you carjack armored trucks to make more money. I liked being able to use the environment in finishing blows (not that I was very good at it), too. That was fun, ramming someone into a storefront counter in a mall and having the metal grate come crashing down on them was surprisingly satisfying. And I loved being able to compare my stats with those of my friends and discovering that I was as good, if not better, in some areas than Jason's little brother, who plays a hell of a lot more games in this genre than I do. I like the game enough that I grabbed it for $5 for my PS4 during a sale a little while ago and started playing it again the other night.
Arkham Asylum - I'd heard great things about it, but wasn't sure if it was going to be my kind of game. Turns out, it was. I loved it, it had the perfect mix of exploration, combat, stealth, and puzzle-solving. And I screamed like a girl at that point where you look through the window in that door in the sewer and Killer Croc is suddenly on the other side of the glass.
Theresia - Not usually a fan of horror anything, but this DS game was a hybrid of survival horror and point-and-click. I never did finish it, but I know I was close. I really should go back and play it again and go all the way to the end this time.
Your turn - any games you played that you didn't expect to like but did?
