First off, I'd like to say that I'm happy to have met all of you amazing people here, because this is fun! If anyone uses Twitter, follow me there: @coygoonersgirl  Don't be afraid to say hello, I love to chat :)

Casey, Blake and I have an episode of Backloggers Anonymous coming up. We will be discussing the original Metroid, so I've been playing it again on my 3DS. This game really takes me back to a very specific memory. When I was a kid, I did not have the NES but my older cousins did. My grandparents owned a house in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and we would all go up there together for vacation. The downstairs area was relegated to the kids, which I did not like because while it was a finished basement area, it was creepy as hell. Or maybe that was the shag carpeting...

In any case, the first time my older cousins brought their NES also happened to be the first time I gained interest in spending more time downstairs. I wanted to play Mario, obviously, but they had a different game in mind: Metroid. My mind was blown the instant I saw Samus could walk towards the left of the screen. That was more than Mario could do, after all.

So happy my 3DS lets me play the classics.

The first time I played Metroid was the first time I got to play a Nintendo for a long amount of time. I spent hours in Brinstar and made zero progress, because I didn't know how to play a game like that yet. I had only played arcade games and 2600 games up to that point.

I also couldn't beat Glass Joe in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!.

I also had zero idea what I was doing, haha! But it was still the coolest thing I had ever played, so it did not matter. Then we were forced to go outside and "be kids". So rude of our parents.

I rented and played Metroid on the NES, but I really didn't get into the series until Super Metroid on the SNES.

It's amazing how little things in games impressed us back then.  Like being able to go to the left in Metroid.  I remember when I first played Ms. Pac-Man and was blown away by the fruit moving around the maze.  Not a big deal now, but back then as a kid, it felt SO INNOVATIVE!

I was so impressed I still remember it so vividly. I'm sure that will turn into a "back in my day" moment at some point...lol, sigh.

I got into metroid via fusion and prime releasing around the same time. I loved fusion, but prime was frustrating. I learned to love it though, just wasnt used to backtracking.

The first time a game blew my mind was Star Fox 64 looking amazing in 3D.

I have Twitter, but use Facebook almost exclusively.

I am super terrible at first person shooters, but I toughed it out for Prime. I really enjoyed those games, and still go back to playing them. Fusion was great too, I should pull that one out again.

Followed you on twitter just now haha. I think a moment for me like yours, was playing Super Mario 64 for the first time as a kid. It was just so mind blowing seeing Mario in 3D and being able to move anywhere. It's dated now obviously, but there was nothing like it back then.

I got really late into Metroid with Prime 3 being my first one. I eventually tried to play the rest, only ones I've yet to play is Hunters and Pinball. I played the first Metroid on my 3DS for the first time in 2015 and really loved it. I agree, love that I'm able to play older games on my 3DS along with new ones.

There was nothing like Mario 64!! I want to play it again because it really was a great game. I pride myself in being able to say that I was able to jump to the top of the castle before beating the game.

Exactly, there was nothing like it back then. That is awesome that you got there. Reminds me when I played Super Mario Sunshine and went to Pianta Village first lol

I LOVE SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE. Haha sorry...I want to play it again, but I have no way to do so :(

Samus definitely beats Mario on the left walking!

That sounds like when I used to go to my Uncle Matt's house, and they made us kids play this weird antiquated video system I don't even know the name of.  Ah, the memories...

But it was still fun, wasn't it? LoL...I think I would have played any game back then just to be able to play. I did not get an actual console until the N64, so I lived off my Gameboy and other people's nice parents.

I played Metroid on Wii Virtual Console not too long ago. Frustrated me, but I'll go back and play it again sometime. I'd like to run the whole series at some point.

I have a Twitter but I don't have a smart phone which is kind of the required device for it. One day I'll get one and look like everyone else at work when it gets slow - staring at a phone.

Haha yeah...totally guilty of that!!

I carry paper for notes now and I take it out and write at work. It's about the size of a phablet. So now I fit in, as long as no one looks too closely and sees I'm only holding paper. LoL

I love it. I like writing with pen and paper. There's a different sense of fluidity knowing you can't really go back and add/delete/correct like you can on a computer. You have to trust in your abilities to get your point across. It almost makes me feel more confident.

I've found over the years, though, that my handwriting is getting worse. I really think it's from lack of practice, since most of what we do in life is typed now. I've made an effort to do more handwriting, just to keep my muscle memory.

I just read Reflections on the Artist's Way by Julia Cameron and she suggests writting three pages of whatever every morning and she specifies that it be handwritten. I think it's about not being able to self edit quickly and change your thoughts as they come to you like you can on a computer. It's all about getting your negative self talk out on paper so you can avoid it later. It's interesting.

I've noticed that sometimes I can't read my handwritting, so I've also tried to work on penmanship. You want to write fast, like typing, but it's slower and you have to slow down to write more clearly. I learned to type a while back and so it's super fast. I think I try to go too fast to imitate that.

That's super interesting! And a really good way to start writing for the day. I'll have to try that out for sure.

I also cannot read my own writing at times, and I did not like that feeling. And you're right, it's because I want to get it out fast, just like typing. Even my signature has gotten just...well, lazy over the past few years. There's something to be said for having to tell your brain to slow down and think about what it is doing.

Something that helps slow me down is changing my handwriting style for certain things: for example, if I'm writing a non-cursive lowercase "y", I normally hook the bottom. I've started to just straightline it, so it looks just like this "y". Such a small change, but I have to stop and think about it everytime I do it, and that helps me slow down over all.

I'm also left handed, so I have a really hard time writing in a straight line on unlined paper. I'm working on that, too, while trying to keep my writing the same size across multiple pages. I really have seen an improvement. Good muscle training.

Not being able to read your own notes is definitely counter productive. I was surprised to find I was doing that. I knew what I wrote when I wrote it, but later it was completely unintelligible.
