We recorded Nerds Without Pants last night. It is a great show, even though there are some technical difficulties, and I hope you’ll give it a listen when it drops next Wednesday. For the Stage Select topic, Angelo wanted us to select our top three video game intros. This was a difficult task, and I had been thinking about it for the entire two weeks before finalizing my picks. We all picked some awesome games, but of course we could have gone for hours on this one subject. So I thought it would be fun to talk about just a few of the games that almost made my list.
Saints Row IV
I’ve only included the scene where the Boss disarms the nuke to the tune of “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, but if you have time you should totally seek out the whole first two missions of the game, because the very beginning has a hilarious meta commentary on the difference between Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto, and seeing the Boss as the President is particularly funny considering how things are going right now. This is one of my favorite games of the past few years, and I wish I had time to play it a third time.
South Park: The Stick of Truth
The animation here is such a specific reference that I’m sure there are plenty of people who played this game and didn’t get the joke. Again, I included the shorter version of the intro, but you should also check out the first few minutes of gameplay, because the humor fires on all cylinders for this one. I played all the way through this game twice and got all the achievements, which I rarely do. Can’t wait for The Fractured But Whole. Too bad it’s been delayed to anywhere from April 2017 to March 2018. :/
Soul Reaver 2
The Legacy of Kain series is one of my favorites, in large part because of the writing and amazing vocal performances of the cast. I always wondered why these games had such a theatrical feel to them, but then I learned that the cast actually recorded their lines together and were able to play off of each other like performing a play. There is another version of this video on YouTube where you can see them reading their dialogue while the cinematics play in the corner, and it’s a real treat to see. Too bad this series is dead now.
Dead Space 2
This one was so close to being on my list for NWP. Not only does it simultaneously do a wonderful job of recapping the first game and establishing Isaac Clarke as a character (he was a silent protagonist in DS 1), but the opening minutes of this game are some of the most intense I have experienced.
Silent Hill 2
This is more of an attract video than the true intro to the game, but I’m a sucker for the music and the voice work. While the performances in Silent Hill 2 may seem a bit weak by today’s standards, they were top notch back in 2001. As a side note, I saw Akira Yamaoka perform this song at Video Games Live back in 2010, and it was an incredible experience. I got him to sign my copy of Silent Hill 3, which is my favorite game in the series.
