Hello my friends and here we have another series of games. So sit back and enjoy!
As I mentioned in my Hyrule Warriors and Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper observations, even though I have many Warriors style musou games I hardly play em. I played about 30% or so before I got bored and moved onto other games.
Samurai Warrior Katana is a different story however as not only was it the first Warriors style game I beat, it was the first I played. It is not a typical Warriors game however as every character you play as and the battles within are arcade style fights. It's hard to explain, but it's kind of like how Dragon Quest Swords wasn't a typical Dragon Quest game and more of an arcade style rpg hybrid.
Secret Files 1 & 2. The Secret Files series of games was released on the PC and the first 2 games were released for the Nintendo Wii. The second however did not make it to America so I had to import the European PAL title. Both are point and click puzzle adventures much like any point and click puzzle adventures. Theres silly item combinations and some illogical puzzle solving for all you point and click puzzle nuts like me.
Sega Superstar Tennis brought Sonic and firends into a tennis style setting. And it was surprisingly fun. I loved the courts inspired by various franchises (Curien Mansion has Zombies walk across the course, Nights has a water court dream inspired set up) The game was super fun and filled that hole of a true Mario Power Tennis sequel (though we did get the new play control port)
Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes is yet another Warriors style musou game and yet another I haven't beaten. I do enjoy musou style games, they're just so hard to play for a long amount of time. I can play jrpgs forever and a day, but something about these just can't quite get me engaged to that extent.
Shiren the Wanderer is I believe the 3rd entry (or something) in the Shiren series of games. It's a difficult, roguelike, mystery dungeon crawler that will kick your ass sideways and silly. There are some silly things like having to do a sidequest to unlock the blacksmith which allows you to upgrade your weapons. It is pretty cool to be able to use three characters at one time however, so that's a cool addition.
Silent Hill Shattered Memories is the first Silent Hill game to be put onto a Nintendo home console. The game is a reimagining of the first Silent Hill and it’s fairly engaging. The running is a bit wonky as you flail the remote and nunchuk in a mad dash against the monsters. There are some cool little puzzles in the game and various things can effect which ending you get (such as the dirt Harry ending if you stare at asses and cleavage) It was a fun game, even if it’s not quite the Silent Hill experience most fans enjoy from the series.
Sin & punishment: star successor is the long awaited sequel to Treasure’s excellent Sin & Punishment for the N64. It wasn’t until the Wii hit that the original came out via Virtual console and despite some positive press, the sequel didn’t quite sell. I bought a copy for $20 and man oh man was it worth it. The on rails shooting and bullet hell is excellent. The monsters, the story, the setting are all wonderful. A great sequel to a great game
Skate it is the Wii version of the original Skate. It allows you three control options only one of which I suggest you use in the wii remote/nunchuk style. The “flick it” mechanic works pretty decently with it and I often nailed more tricks than I messed up on. As for the other 2 options you can play with just the remote (not recommended) or the wii balance board (Highly unrecommended)
SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 is a compilation of SNK games and is an odd game as even though this is volume 1 a volume 2 was never released. Minor gripes aside, Vol 1 consists of the following: Art of Fighting, Baseball Stars 2, Burning Fight, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, King of the Monsters, Last Resort, Magician Lord, Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Showdown, Sengoku, Shock Troopers Super Sidekicks 3: The Next Glory, The King of Fighters ’94, Top Hunter: Roddy and Cathy, and World Heroes as an unlockable. It’s an incredible value should you enjoy fighting games, shoot em ups, and beat em ups.
Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing was the first good Sonic Racing game and the people at Sumo did a fantastic job with their first outing. I really enjoyed the courses and the arcade mode was fantastic. It even rivaled Mario Kart Wii in terms of replayability.
Sonic and the Black Knight is fun in some cases, but flawed in many aspects. The rpg mechanics of tempering better swords and abilities is neat, and running around is pretty fun. However, the swordplay is often a miss in execution. Sometimes it’ll work, other times you’ll flail around uselessly. The music was enjoyable and thankfully they took out the god awful mini games that plagued the next title
Sonic and the Secret Rings was a lot better than Sonic ’06 which is saying something, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. The on rails style of running works in some instances, but I often felt that mapping the jumping mechanic to the actual movement of the remote instead of a button was bizarre and often didn’t work. Still some instances the controls were neat. You could hold the remote and tilt it backwards to slow Sonic down or tilt forward to run fast. There were also 40 min games included and they were just awful…god awful. Take my advice…just don’t even play em.
